Yeah but that's in a perfect world situation. A lot of great teams have that issue. For example if you look at Boston and they for some reason needed cap-space, they could not move Backes without giving up assets (like we did with Marleau, but ten times worse since it's a long-term contract). For us, we don't have that anymore. We could trade anyone for cap-space plus we get assets back. My point was we're not in 'cap-hell'. Cap-hell was when we had bad players signed to terrible contracts, like Clarkson, Phaneuf, etc.
But yes agreed, I was hoping Dubas would nail those Marner Matthews contracts but he didn't
It's confusing because Pridham was supposed to be cap-space god apparently. I still think Pridham is fantastic at what he does, but gambling the backup spot on Hutchinson was not a good move by Dubas and Pridhim.

Hell no. I was saying last year that this team is unwatchable. I can't stand this soft style of play with no push back or fire in their bellies. It's an embarrassment.
The defenseman, including Rielly, are the worst defensively in the league. I have no idea why folks still like Rielly. He's almost as bad a Jake defensively, who was total garbage. He was shielded for many years from criticism because of his offense, which has disappeared this season.

BUT it takes time to learn how to win. OVIE took 13 years. How many 1st round exits to the Penguins did WSH suffer through?????

Its true that WSH went through a few coaches, but the one that worked was the coach that taught them defense and grit and how to win tight games.

Which player in our core has the compete level, aggression or grit as Ovie? Is it Nylander? Matthews? Or was Ovie “taught that” by a coach? If that’s the case, will Keefe teach that to them?
Also, I’m eager to understand which of our core will blossom into the physical players Crosby and Malkin are.

I will admit I know nothing about Wolfpacks or even Howling at the Moon Wolf t-shirts
In real life... my t shirts just have band references like Green Day, Blink 182 and Neck Deep.

Regressing based on coaching. Babcock was trying to get this team to play the tried tested and true winning hockey and could not. The entire Leafs organization was against him. The new assistant coaches pushed BS puck posession even more, thats they the Leafs PPK and PP has become a joke.
it all starts with Dubas. he has to go.
its not the players. They are confused and the lineup changes are too many to count. NO CONSISTENCY. the Bruins have it. WSH has it. Blues have it.

Fair enough.
But there is still no heart and soul on this team. No passion. No character.
Those are things that should exist outside of coaching and management. Firing the coaches and suits won’t fix that.
Trading players will.

If you don't like the dudes on this team, you are likely going to have to wait at least half a decade until this core is overhauled. Until then you may need to find another hobby.
And when the time comes for that new core to be paid in 8 ish years, I'm sure you won't like the money they make either. Just warning you now before it is too late.

No. That is not true for me. I don’t mind players making money at all.
It’s this core of players that I don’t like (and it sounds like that is very common among leafs fans right now).
I also don’t think it will take nearly as long as you think. Shanahan just signed a lengthy extension. He is going to be around for a while. Judging by the player he was, I don’t think he likes this core very much either. He was also hoping they would all sign for less. Not extort for more.
I think he will give dubas a chance to retool this broken roster. If he proves he can’t, I think shanahan will do it himself. As early as this summer.

I see others have already replied, but yeah since Ceci has a qualifying offer already from Ottawa, Dubas had to give him a contract to avoid arbitration.
Ceci at 4.5M isn't as large of an issue as where coaches play him. Ceci on the 3rd pairing is perfect. I can live with Ceci at 4.5M for one year rather than five more years of a worse player in Zaitsev.

When will our fans understand this! Ceci was the cost of getting rid of Zaitzev and that ridiculous contract. I'll take 1 year of Ceci over 5 more years of Zaitzev any day!

WSH and Ovie spent 13 years trying to get past the PIT and the 2nd round??? Did they trade their core? Backstrom, Ovie, Kuznetsov, Wilson? did they blow it up???

Sports is clearly not for you. You seem to take loses to harshly. Most people in this town carry around their Maple Leafs fandom like emotional baggage. Either get over it, talk to a professional, or stop watching.
I recommend stop watching. Life is short. You should enjoy it. Do what makes you happy. Its clear that the Maple Leafs do not make you happy or else you wouldn't start questioning the character of people you don't know.

I don't know what kind of injury can make someone clueless on playing their position all of a sudden. It really is scary to see some nights. I wonder if these "offense" first D-men get a pass on their screw ups a little bit too easily because they can contribute to scoring. In my mind if you're giving up what you just got for the team offensively...what is the point? Might has well have a 35pt D that can play in his own end over a 72pt guy who costs way more and gives up what he contributed. I guess he needs someone to tell him where to stand the way Hainsey did...
They set a franchise record for points because the nhl started awarding loser points for ot losses. Had this rule change not happened, they would not have set the record.

How likeable this team is or isn’t is on Dubas and Shanahan now! No they aren’t likeable at all unless you thought it wasn’t a disgrace to watch Dermott hugging on for dear life in his supposed fight last night. What a cowardly display of manlyhood that was. He should be embarrassed.

They still would have been a playoff team I'm sure if they could throw money around. Players thought differently back then.
