Didn’t win a board battle all game. Lost all 3 FO in OT

I’m getting close to using the B word until I see a reason not to

Dach has been slowly regressing over the past couple years.

Not sure if that says more about our organization or about him as an individual. But he’s been trending in the wrong direction.

Regressing would imply he’s dropped off from a high level. This is the opposite. This is a guy that hasn’t progressed.

Maybe he was rushed. Maybe it’s coaching and bad player development.

or maybe it’s another example of a high draft pick that didn’t pan out. Happens in every sport.

Regardless , I don’t see anything to get excited about - 20 or not. He doesn’t have a scorer’s mentality. He’s soft on the boards. He can’t win faceoffs.

If he wasn’t tall or more importantly, if he wasn’t the 3rd overall, people would be writing him off.

And he had an extra year in the whl and got a start to his career dominating the AHL where there was no immediate rush let him have a couple months despite huge numbers he and Perry put up.

did Kirby Dach not play hockey at 18 while getzlaf did?

One began playing in the NHL at 18, Dach. One played in the WHL 2 more years after their draft, Getzlaf.

I guess to you it's a merely a coincidence the 2003 draft is considered so good Years back when so many 1st and 2nds were really good. Many of those would of been rushed into the NHL their d2 years which instead didn't exist. So they got a lot more development opportunities to dominate or work up their confidence and skills.

dach’s first season was his age 19 season, getzlaf was his age 20 season. Your theory is getzlaf was good because he beat up on bums for an extra year? Seriously?

the 2003 draft was fine but wasn’t even the best draft of that decade

He's 21 guys. How many times have we seen young players turn in up and down performances for their first few years only to have it click for them at random moments.

Not everyone is a Debrincat success out of the gate (and even he had a whole down year).

Have to be patient. Dach clearly has his issues he needs to work out but it's not like he doesnt show very good things either.

In his age 21 season Getzlaf had 58 points in 82 games. Dach has 46 points for his career, 13 so far in his age 21 season. On pace for 33 points this year. Getzlaf had 82 points in 77 games in his age 22 season (07-08). Hell even as a 20 year old rookie Getzlaf had 39 points in 57 games. Dach barely has that in 114 games. These comparisons are silly.
Now do Joe Thornton.

Thornton after 115GP - 32pts
Dach after 115GP - 46pts

in Thornton’s age 20 season he had 60 points at 21 he had 71. This during the clutch and grab era. Will Dach even have 71 points total by the end of his age 21 season?

I'll bite on the Thornton comparison. Joe played 55 games his first season and had 7 points with almost zero PP time. The next year he had 41 points (16 goals) and the following 60 points (23 goals). No he didn't have an injury but as you can see Joe had an upward trajectory while Dach is the total opposite.

If you can't see Dach's talent you are blind.

But talent is not enough if he doesn't learn from his mistakes and it doesn't seem to be happening at this time.... for whatever reason.
Of course, his HC is not doing him any favours by having him take all the draws in OT but fly-bys in OT simply shouldn't happen.

I get the fly-by comment but Makar does that to a lot of people.

I agree that the coaching is not helping him at all.

He has 100% without question “regressed”.

This is a kid who as a rookie was noticeable just about every game, even if the production wasn’t there. There was flashes of his potential. And he was almost always one of our better forwards, despite playing a lot with guys like Carpenter in the bottom 6.

Dach legitimately had me excited. I was very impressed by how well he looked in his first season. But these days(and really going back to last season when he made that early return from injury) he hasn’t looked the same. I notice him far less, and those flashes of elite skill seem to be happening less and less as time goes by. He is no doubt worse now than he was when he first joined the team a few years ago.

Yep. This is what I fear will happen to Reichel as well.

The Hawks have nothing at forward other than Cat outside of Dach/Reichel so there's a ton of pressure on both players.
