You wonder if this year was the strongest roster we could muster. With a flat cap and guys leaving for nothing again, it’s an open question. I guess you counter with room for growth still with the young core, but....
I would tend to believe that more if I had seen progression instead of regression in the face of lesser competition in each attempt.

Next year we will be back with Boston, Tampa, an revamped coach Q Florida and people want to fill the bottom of this roster with Robertsons, Sandins, ELCs, 800Ks.

There could be a harder lesson on the horizon for the core.

The reality of the situation with Hyman is that players of his playstyle do not age well in the slightest, and he's turning 29 in a week.

Clowe, Ladd, Lucic, Okposo, Dustin Brown, Backes... our very own mistake in Clarkson... there is an enormous laundry list of folks who play a similar style of game and get paid long term at a similar age. It never, ever ends well.

And he's been injured a lot in the playoffs to prove it

For more of the same - long term deal at 5ish. No thanks it's not rocket science
Andersen isn’t our problem seeing as he’s walking. You’re having a hard time understanding how we’re gonna fit Hyman’s RAISE. It’s not rocket science

Agreed, we will be in tough next year, that’s why this year is rock bottom. The clearest path, the weakest competition, Dubas all in and zero to show for it, except more questions going forward.

You could give Hyman half of Andersen's money, but the question is is that a sustainable long term solution that crowds out Morgan Rielly and other possible upgrades?

Yeah the other poster is saying we can’t fit Hyman at 5. It’s a raise of 2.5. Hyman’s current contract doesn’t exist apparently

Imo Rielly should take his current contract plus the 1.2 for Kessel retention and call it a day. He’s a 1 dimensional D man

I think if the attitude is we are in tough for next year, it just means we need to make more meaningful cap restructuring.

If keeping the Big 4 intact is non negotiable, that means moving on from the contracts of Andersen, Hyman, Muzzin, Kerfoot Simmonds, Thornton to get you almost $18 million in free cap space to reinvent this club.

Is that enough money to get you a top six forward, a third line center, a stud defenseman, backup goalie and some depth?

Suspect some late nights at MLSE. This flat cap was never part of the plan, but it doesn’t matter and these big contracts look like albatrosses now.

If Hyman does walk, and they trade Kerfoot, sign a 1B goalie for 2-3 mil and let Simmonds walk, they'd definitely have a bit of cap room to reorganize the depth forward situation.

That's enough room for 3 3ish mil players.

I’ve pretty much accepted the fact that Hyman is gone. I have a sneaking suspicion that the leafs will bring back Foligno on a 2-3 year deal.

This isn’t entirely accurate. Dubas decided 4.5 was too expensive for our third line center role and Kadri had more value to a team where he could be the 2C. It made sense to trade Kadri to a Colorado but Dubas should have got a better return.

It made sense for Colorado at least.

Hyman is a very unique player that Leafs could use more of.

His game which includes 100% effort and compete shift in and shift out, game in and game out, is among the few consistent one can count on with the Leafs.

Nobody works harder than Zach and I sure hope Leafs GM doesn't let him walk because if they're looking for more "killer instinct", then his loss would take the Leafs in the wrong direction.

If he is looking for between $5 and $6M with term then he needs to be looking elsewhere. He had a great regular season but has never had a big playoff. He is turning 29 and has missed substantial time with knee injuries 2 of the last 3 years. Without the flat cap I could maybe see $5 M x 4 but without him being a post season horse I wouldn't do that. Rielly is up for a raise in 22-23 as is Campbell and Zach at $5M is a non starter. To be clear, I like the guy and if the room was there I would prefer they did what they had to, to keep him around but they can't afford him. On top of that I don't think his game will age well. I don't think he repeats this season and I would predict a decline setting in by year 3 because of the style he plays. They can't keep spending money to keep a group together that has never won anything

Dubas and his buddy Pridham decided it made more sense to spent $11m on an older #2C rather than $4.5m on a younger #2C.

That’s what’s known as “horrible cap mismanagement”

No more losing guys for nothing with this idiotic 'Own rental' crap that some GM made up to explain his inability to get something of value for his impending UFA. It has to stop. Morgan needs to have a contract put in front of him that has a number we can afford going forward. If he says he wants to wait...trade him. The same should have been done with Hyman last off season. "Don't like the offer...well..we would love to give you more but its a business for both sides...cya"
