Leafs will do a deal where they pay him almost everything in first 3 years of deal like with everyone else with bonus .. and going 8 years gives them an advantage (1 year) over everyone else on AAV .. I am expecting a 4.5M AAV deal for 8 years largely paid upfront .. we will get 5 more years and then last 3 years will be a buyout .. he is 1st priority signing .. like it or not Zach is our only player who plays playoff hockey up front right now

I'm not sure i'd do 8 years for Nylander, and you want to do 8 for Hyman.
I dont even offer him more than $3mil or i'd let him walk, and that on a 2-3 year deal.

So the Leafs offered him $5, and Hyman said no. I wish him well. As much as I think he is an important part of this team, max I would offer is $4.45. Same as Killorn.

Disappointing. Maybe moving Marner is a good idea? Allows for better depth...

Anyway, will suck to see him in another jersey.

Hyman makes a ton of money here doing ads, whatnot. There is no escrow there, it’s straight cash in his wallet. That money evaporates the moment he goes elsewhere. I LOVE Hyman, when everyone was calling him a useless plug, Babcock’s son, a scourge on a top line, I defended him, heart and determination, with more skill than was given credit. That said, I’m done breaking the bank for guys who’s done nothing in the playoffs, accomplished sweet f*** all. If he wants 5 a year, you say thanks and move on. If he wants his money up front, you say sure thing Zack, but it means less AAV, unlike the other guys who got it all. Use your leverage Dubas, money up front is our advantage, or it should have been.

It’s not even drawing a line, look at how many bodies we need and what we have left, the flat cap, we might just have to say no this time. And I love the guy. Either that or you’re making drastic moves.

Hometown discount, you have your ad money here, you’re on a winner, sorry that’s the reality Zack, you’re call, love to have you back.

please say this is a joke, or that you dont mean for Hyman!!
...I'm not willing to pay Reilly $7-$7.5 and you want to give it to a grinder who has been blessed by playing with 2 guys that are infinitely more talented than him his career in Toronto be it any combo of Matthews/Marner/Tavares/Nylander
That was just an example of 1 year overpayment to get him to stay long term. Like I said though if you can fill the other holes on the roster first, why not reward the guy for his play the last few seasons without screwing your cap long term.

Mason Marchment would be pretty versatile right about now.

I was so mad when he traded him for that Runt in Malgin. I was rationalizing it to myself saying the guy gets injured all the time and maybe he was just snake bit and it was never going to work out. Then..we see he is playing a solid game for FLA and our guy stops by in the spring from Europe to play for the marlies. He cultivated that kid...brought him along and then just gave up...makes me sick. I am sure the xGF is great for Malgin..or something.

If it's down to Rielly or Hyman, I'll take neither.

Hyman was very good in the regular season but ineffective in the playoffs, so if he wants north of 3M, then thanks and so long. I'm not sure why he gets a pass for his (lack of) playoff production anyway.

Rielly was poor in the regular season but surprisingly dependable in the playoffs. His only memorable glaring error was having a controller disconnected moment against Suzuki in game... whichever that was. 4? 5? Whatever. Unfortunately, his game is all about skating and I don't think it'll age well. I'm not even convinced that he can get back to being a good PP1QB, even if Malhotra/Keefe are replaced.

If It's true that they offered him 5 million and he said no then bye.

Take that money and acquire Rickard Radkell, or sign Brandon Saad, or Mikieal Granlund

I want Hyman back but there is a limit 5 million for him is to much

I think the idea of cutting guys loose so they have a chance elsewhere has got to stop. You hoard them and you give them a fair shot. Why else are you developing these guys for 3-5 years just to let them go at under market value?

Though to be fair what was the market value for a 24 year old with just 4 NHL games under his belt?

Probably should have just kept him and provided a realistic path for career advancement for him.

Fair enough, though also easier said than done. I believe he got slotted into the Panthers top 9, an opportunity he wouldn't have gotten with the Leafs last year.

Maybe they could have waived the Goat last season and had Spezza play centre instead of wing. But I'm not sure you could justify doing that based on his play up to that point

when he is the guy dumping into the corner in the first place, whats he actually retrieving?
He regains the possessions that he gives away with regularity and wastes most of a shift that way, then we see Matthews skate off on another shift that he didnt get a touch.

We lost vs MTL because anytime Marner had the puck Matthews got double teamed, because Hyman really isnt a scoring threat, as he proved over and over, chance after chance, no matter how open he was. ...had we stacked that line, with Nylander instead of Hyman one of Matthews or Nylander would have been open and able to score on those chances.

they got 3 shifts together and looked dominant, but, then back to Hyman, and back into the corner goes the puck.

great post !

he had another brutal post season where he killed the top line yet people ignore how many chances he got handed to him for some strange reason

and then there's that idiot Keefe who keeps throwing him out there 20 mins a night , i guess because him and his excel sheet decision making GM believe his shot attempt stats would eventually translate to actually goals . lol

and he's easily replaceable in house , just throw Mik on the top line and tell him to glue himself to the front of the net and whack at the puck when it comes near like Hyman does

Defending Hyman was not popular back than lol

What does it even matter anymore?
He wants top dollar like everyone else gets on this team. He has become a mercenary like his buddies. He walks cause he feels insulted. Meanwhile, we keep Marner and his $11 million and his stupid hats.
Dubas should leave with Hyman.

You may not realize this, but Reilly is the Leafs best defenceman. By a landslide.

Losing him would be catastrophic.

this has Clarkson 2.0 written all over it

offer 10 over 3 and let him walk if wants more

Yes, yes it does. Darcy Tucker is another potential cautionary tale.

Hyman is a guy who's had a few injuries of the last few years. He may not have the "miles" associated with your average 29 year old, given that he only turned pro at age 23... but he doesn't exactly play a game that tends to age well.

The problem for the Leafs is they can't go out and sign him to a 3 year, $20m deal that you know somebody else would offer him. The cap space just doesn't exist.

They could go out and sign him to a 5 year, $26-27m deal, but it would likely prevent them from being able to fill the other holes on the roster, and still pose some long term risk.

They could also go out and do something crazy like sign him to an 8 year, $35m deal that's frontloaded... but it is a slightly ridiculous prospect for a player of Hyman's ilk. It's a kind of deal that neither party has any real belief in being something that gets completed, and I'm not sure Hyman would want to surrender his choice of where to play.

This isn't about Morgan Rielly vs Zach Hyman... this should be solely about what it makes sense to pay Hyman on a team that has the big 4.

It’s absolutely a choice between Hyman vs Rielly.

Paying Hyman this year means there’s no way they can pay Rielly next year - - not with those three boat anchor contracts destroying the cap.

Essentially, you can pay a low skill try-hard plugger or you can pay your best defenceman who’s a borderline #1D.

Seems like an obvious no brainer, but with the Three Stooges in charge of things, I wouldn’t be shocked to see them gift Hyman with 8yrs/$56m.
