It's an option. That was my point because you clearly couldn't think of it. It's okay, now you know.

Instead of digging yourself a deeper hole trying to defend your original misinformed proclamation, you should probably just let this one go.

The NHL cap structure is not even remotely close to the NBA cap structure.

A “sign and trade” of a UFA in the NHL make absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Which is why it’s never occurred in the history of the NHL cap era.

Lmao what are you talking about? I’m not the person you responded to. I just saw your ridiculous sign and trade proposal (that never happens in the NHL and we don’t even know if it’s legal in the CBA)

I’ve pretty much accepted the fact that Hyman is gone. I have a sneaking suspicion that the leafs will bring back Foligno on a 2-3 year deal.
I would agree. Foligno saying he may be back in Columbus are just the words of someone going through a breakup with a long-term partner. Like when you tell someone you've been dating for a long time that you "need a break" and "will revisit the relationship after the break". It's just the softens the blow. He'll be back in Toronto. Especially with Jones leaving Columbus too. Hyman is out.

The funny part is despite the unexpected flat cap, management doesn't seem to want to adjust their strategy that was based on a larger anticipated budget. You can lead a horse to water...
I’m also pissed that the cap is a flat cap, I get that COVID was expensive but the league announced that the cap was gonna go up and contracts were negotiated based off that

I wonder where he'll end up going, but it's obvious that the Leafs can't afford him unless he gives a big home town discount.

I cant see Hyman resigning to be honest. might be his best chance to make as much as possible. if he cant get it in Toronto he may go looking for it.

Unfortunately with the way the leafs set up their cap this is true for pretty much everyone until these contracts are gone

The more I think of this, the more we need to move on from Hyman and keep the powder dry for other options that bring a similar role player.

It didn't work with Hyman, it's not likely going to work better with an older Hyman who gets paid more and probably is more banged up. We can sign him but it just makes the team top heavier with less options and less flexibility.

The big risk is the plumbing doesn't work and the team takes a tumble in the standings in 2021-22, but maybe a higher pick and a face plant is what this team needs to make meaningful changes.

SIMMONS: This is Zach Hyman’s big chance to cash in | Toronto Sun

Zach Hyman was a late bloomer who has beaten all the odds.

He didn’t start showing himself as a player of significance until his third season at the University of Michigan. He played his first NHL game six years after he was drafted. After his first full season, he was so gangly that Auston Matthews asked to have him removed from his line.

And now, just days away from his 29th birthday, he’s a husband and a father and for the first time, an NHL free agent of value, and the interest in him comes from all across the National Hockey League.

He has a choice to make, really: Does he want to stay in Toronto, the city he grew up in, with family this close, with his childhood friends still part of his life, and with the comfort he has earned on a Maple Leafs hockey team he has grown up with?

Or does he want to cash in on this one-time opportunity?

The Maple Leafs can’t afford to pay Hyman what others will pay. They probably won’t offer the same kind of term he could get on the open market, either. And while I never discount what kind of salary cap magic Leafs money man Brandon Pridham might come up with, this seems to be a rather basic decision for the winger.

You may get one chance in your career, at the right time, to make big money. He has scored 28 goals in his past 82 regular-season games and scoring isn’t really what he does. He’s maddening to play against. He’s non-stop. He hits everything and everybody. And then he does it again the next night or the next shift. He is the 11th highest-paid player on the Leafs as he heads to free agency.

This is Zach Hyman’s time and deservedly so.

He’ll get more than $5 million a season, probably in a five-year package. And the Leafs will miss him terribly when he’s gone.

Hyman is a very unique player that Leafs could use more of.

His game which includes 100% effort and compete shift in and shift out, game in and game out, is among the few consistent one can count on with the Leafs.

Nobody works harder than Zach and I sure hope Leafs GM doesn't let him walk because if they're looking for more "killer instinct", then his loss would take the Leafs in the wrong direction.
this is not true ...everyone on the team is on record saying the hardest working player is Spezza, and then perhaps Tavares.
Hyman just needs to work harder (on the ice) because he doesnt have the talent that other players do.

So $6 million is big money, but $5 million per on perhaps a longer term and signing bonus upfront is not big money? It really depends on how greedy the player is and how much is enough or not enough.

This player is not worth more than $4M. Most teams will take a hard pass. Some of the media appears to work for the agents at times. Its common across different leagues. Ask yourself this: Would Vegas sign Hyman to $5M+? No chance.

If we can get him under 5m per, we have to let him go and develop Anderson better.

It's been said, but if the number is over $4.5M/year we need to walk.

- 29 years old
- Hasn't played a full season in 3 years
- Plays a style that factors into the aforementioned

We'll miss him, but go get 2 $2.5M players (or some sort of permutation of $5M) instead.

Agree 100%.

You can’t reward a guy just because he tries his best.

That’d be like giving Dubas a contract extension because he created an analytics department.

Hyman at $6m is an even worse overpay than Marner at $10.5m

Lets hope Hyman's player agent Todd Reynolds doesn't use Marner' goal production as his comparable :crossfing

Goal scoring statistics by linemates since Marner signed his $10.9 mil AAV deal.

Zach Hyman
2019-20 ....... 51 games .. 21 goals & playoffs ... 5 games 1 goals.
2020-21 ....... 43 games ...15 goals & playoffs ...7 games 1 goals.

Total last 2 years = 94 games .. 36 regular season goals and 2 playoff goals.

Mitch Marner (@ $10.9 mil AAV)
2019-20 .... 59 games .. 16 goals & playoffs .. 5 games 0 goals.
2020-21 .....55 games ...20 goals & playoffs ...7 games 0 goals.

Total last 2 years = 114 games .. 36 regular season goals and 0 playoff goals.

So what is a Zach Hyman goal worth (in -20 less games played) in comparison to a Marner goal when those #'s are virtually the same except for playoffs?

Even if a Hyman goal is worth only 1/2 a Marner goal that still = $ 5.45 mil.

PS .
The rest of Marner's $$ value must come when their 3rd linemate Matthews puts the puck in the net. :wg:

Just like the others? He's not taking no discount after the others soaked Dubas. Good player, like his work ethic but stone hands and in my opinion doesn't have the high hockey IQ, smarts. Can be replaced unfortunately much cheaper. With the way Dubas cash strapped this team don't think he's coming back.

Give away next years 1st in order to dump Muzzin and his contract.

Then use that cap space to give Hyman $49m for 7 years.

“We can and we will!”

Big fan of Hyman, but you can't pay him more than 5 million. Love the player and the heart. But given the way he plays, he is likely going to spend a lot of time on the IR moving forward. This is one of those tough decisions Dubas is going to have to make. Are they that much worse signing a guy like Granlund for less term and money? Not sure.

As others have said... looking more and more like he is getting interest @ $5 mil around the league, maybe even more.

My question then, is who can we bring in with a similar skillset at a lower cost? Who is out there who brings this kind of play that would fit in with our group?

Imo, Hyman's skill is under rated, espectially in tight spaces. Yes, he bulls his way to the puck, but he has some decent hands and a high hockey IQ.

Thinking about all the gaps in our roster, and moving back to our regular division, I have serious doubts about our success for next season.
