How many 60 goal seasons will Auston Matthews put up in his career?

Hadn't scored in first 3 games after April 9th. Missed 3 games due to injury. Hasn't scored in 2 games since returning from injury.

He still doesn't look 100%. Leafs should just rest him until the playoffs start.

He hasn't scored in 5 last games he's played in. 21 shots during that time. There's probably something off with his shooting ability. I also think they should rest him. I wan't to see 60 goals as much as anyone. But at this point, one has to wonder if it's smart to risk your #1 player for a regular season accolade. It's a major one for sure, but Matthews is the most important player in the team and playoffs are about to start. Leafs have clinched the spot. Just rest him and hope he recovers when the show starts.

Yep I totally agree even though I think they'll play him against Detroit in hopes he gets 60 and then rest him against Boston.

Somehow I stumbled upon Matthew's shots this season and looks like he's pacing to lead the league in shots. He's pacing for 388 shots over 82 games. That's a very respectable number. It felt really high (and I say this as a person who values shooting especially when high-end scorers shoot) and I wanted to check how Ovechkin did early on in his career. In 08-09 season he paced for about 550 shots over 82 games. That's just bananas.

50. The notion 50 in 50 comes from a time when the season was 50 games long. I thought that was common knowledge.
Yeah, I should've expanded upon the question, meaning the modern era of 80 plus games, and of course taking injuries into account. The reason I asked is because it surprised me to see he did 51 in 50? and be sitting at 58 near the end of the season, even with a few missed games. Kind of an off the cuff question if you will, and not much thought behind it when I typed it up. Seems he went on a total heater following a cold start and what is looking like a cold finish.

0 goals since this thread was made - solid jinx.

Now he needs 2 goals in his last 2 games to reach 60.

It's pretty dumb though, since the only reason he scored 50 in 50 that year is because the league was much weaker that year because of world war 2. He never came close any other season.

It's not dumb. It is what it is. Like any other historical event, it needs context to be properly evaluated.

I'm guessing tonight is the last chance for Matthews to hit 60. I can't see the Leafs playing him versus Boston in what will most likely be a meaningless game for them.

They play Detroit tonight. Should be easy goals for the Leafs. I say he hits 70 tonight.

Talk about an injury at the wrong moment :(

60 goals has been a pretty huge deal for a while.

I think he can still make it though, no reason he cant. Going goalless in 5 games is a long time for a scorer like him

He might need to get used to trying to score with whatever is hurting him. I don’t think it’s serious enough or else he wouldn’t be playing but someone said they think it’s a jammed finger. His shot hasn’t looked right since the game before he sat out which is when the injury occured.

The cold start and cold finish are because of injury and coming back from wrist surgery. Even dating back to last season he had 38 goals in the roughly 40-42 healthy games he played. The difference when he’s playing injured is so noticeable because his wrist shot goes from best in the world to hardly even a threat.

I don't think it's a huge deal at all. Sure it'd be nice, but years from now, if I look back at a 58 goal season........I'll be fine. So will he. So will everyone. :)

Better question and better indication of a player's value as a horse. How many playoff series will a Matthews' team win over his career?

1 maybe 2. I know Leafs fans are expecting him to have a bunch but let's face it, it is not something that happens often. I believe the only guys to reach 60 and still playing are Stamkos (once) and Ovechkin (once) so don't expect him to get to 60+ every year.

Can you ask your crystal ball when the Leafs will finally get past the 1st round too ? Asking for a friend

I'm not sure which Leaf fans you are referring to - I think most of us would be ecstatic with 1, with excitement that there could be another one day. Here's hoping for a big couple of games before the real season starts.

I too prefer Patrick Maroon over Barkov, Matthews or McDavid
Therein lies the problem. Patrick Maroon is a moron. Can’t stand him. BUT he has achieved his ultimate goal more than once — and that should be the ultimate goal of every single player who has the good fortune of making it to the NHL. Whether by luck, by teammates, or by being a critical part of culture…… he’s done it.

Toronto has so far lacked that culture (and Matthews as Captain owns a big part of that). Until they find it, 60 goals is nice but not much in the true big picture. Ask Michael Jordan which he liked more… his double doubles and single handed game domination early in his career or the Championship trophies that came after he got the notion that teams win, not individuals.:laugh::laugh: Hint: He’d ask you if you needed some help if you actually asked him the question.

So Maroon wouldn't have won if he played in Matthews' shitty culture? Well then that still makes Cups a terrible way to evaluate player performance.
