How many 60 goal seasons will Auston Matthews put up in his career?

McDavid and Draisaitl have played on the same line 19.9% of the time this season. This adds up to 288.18 even-strength minutes of ice time.

When looking at this back and forth...it is pretty stupid isn't it? Building a team and finding line chemistry and situational adaptability in the pursuit of winning a game is what it is all about, no?

I mean, isn't it amazing how nobody ever discredits Hull because of Oates and their legendary chemistry? People marvel in what they accomplished together...and rightfully so. But Hull never sniffed 70 goals after Oates left....and that fuels the novelty of having witnessed it.

Back then, I don't remember it being anything other than widespread awe....and absolutely different than today when everyone likes to shit on great players and their accolades and accomplishments merely cause they aren't on "their" team.

God bless the internet I suppose.

The only people discrediting anyone on this forum are Oiler fans. I've seen them in threads about Hubderdeau, Shesterkin, Makar, Matthews (all of them) unprovoked for no reason other than to discredit every remotely good NHL player who gets any attention on here.

Also I love how Oiler fans continue to argue that McDavid and Draisaitl are carrying 18 other bums while Matthews is now suddenly a product of Mitch Marner.

I mean it's kind of true. The Oilers without McDavid are a tire fire. The Leafs without Matthew's are still in a playoff spot.

And I say this as a Flames fan.

The Oilers with McDavid and Draisaitl have missed the playoffs for over half their careers. They were a tire fire WITH them. This is why I reject the notion that either of them are that valuable to their team. The Oilers would likely still make the playoffs if you replaced McDavid with an 80 point center this year because the rest of the team is better and they're finally getting okay goaltending.

Oh come on now....don't piss on my head and tell me it's raining! Cut the the bullshit. It happens with every fanbase. How many people said Draisaitl was merely a product of McDavid as well? Sure as hell wasn't Oiler fans.

That said, Matthews merely being a product of Marner is a stupid take for anyone. Does he make him better? For sure. You would have to be a f***ing moron to not think so. But just like I would take a 54goal Hull any day of the week I would take an 86goal Hull with Oates any second of any minute....and I think that logic would apply to M&M too.

That's not a discredit to Matthews....that is a testament to their chemistry.

I watch a lot of McDavid. He does not have the legs of a 21 year old any more: He is not made of rubber and magic. He has lost a step of speed, which his style of play needs. Like everyone else, I can't see into the future but if I were a betting man and had to wager on their development charts I would say they may have different peaks, where Matthews is latter and lasts longer and McDavid's is shorter and earlier. It's probable that Matthews is just starting to peak and we will see alot more out of him than we do McDavid, in the coming years. If the leafs were to trade for McDavid, there would need to be retention on McDavid's salary, maybe make it on par to Matthews cap hit, then I may consider it. I am very happy with Matthews. A 70 goal two-way beast doesn't grow on trees. They are one in a hundred year phenomena, that is if a player like Matthews has ever existed before.

what the....?

did i miss something? did Matthews put up 10 more goals in practice that some leafs fans are counting in his totals? to be a 70 goal scorer he ACTUALLY has to score 70 real goals in real games. I think from now on i'm going to refer to McDavid as a 150 point players as he was on pace last season to to score 154.

Since you leafs fans like talking about pace so much, this season was McDavids 6th consecutive 100 point season, which put him 2nd all time to Gretzky's ridiculous total of 13 consecutive. it also was Draisaitl's 4th consecutive 50 goal season. but guess what? neither of those are talked about because they didn't actually happen, just like Matthews 70 goal season.

This might be the post of the year.

Edit: Yeah, this guy is a dupe account, troll, or both.

I think Dubas is a generational GM, in line with Sather, Ross and Pollock. He has done everything needed by a GM: shored up defense, drafted wisely, and, save for a few weeks in winter, fixed our goaltending. Its up to the players to execute. No excuses. Looking towards the future, even if Matthews leaves in 2 years, its important that Dubas keep learning on the go in order to finish the job. Players come and go, but generational management is hard to find.

6 posts in 2 years including these two gems.

At least one at the moment. I will let the future sort it self out.

Honestly, 1 is good enough for me. A 60 goal peak already puts him in exclusive company.

I personally would’ve been satisfied with 50 goals this past year. The fact he actually went above and beyond to pot another 10 on top of that to reach the elusive 60 means he just blew away all expectations.

60 in 73 will be one of the hallmarks of his career.
