How many 60 goal seasons will Auston Matthews put up in his career?

He's not a 70 goal scorer until he scores 70 goals. And no it isn't wrong to say that. Hypotheticals are stupid and pointless. Tangible, on ice results are all that matters.

Also, please explain how McDavid has "lost a step" in a season where he just got a career high in points. Also, factor in that at McDavid was OUTSIDE of the top 25 in scoring at one point this year and yet he managed to win the scoring title by 8 points, all with a career low shooting percentage.

I agree with you, but I’m wondering how consistent you are. If you have the outlook that “tangible, on the ice results are all that matters”, you must not support adjusted stats. Is that right?

He will have more 60 goal seasons that he will Stanley cups.

At the end of the day all that really matters is real time stats. Projections and what if's are a fun game to play to kill the time but ultimately they're meaningless.

Saying that Matthews is a 70 goal scory is just as stupid as me claiming McDavid is a 145 point player this year if he shot his normal shooting percentage and if Puljujarvi didn't cost him a dozen points.

Did he get 145 points? No he didn't.

Could he have? Sure. But he didn't.

I see you also are giving full credit for Bossy’s goal scoring prowess. This is good. You’re consistent.

I can say I agree with your sentiments here. I may disagree with other things you say, but I agree that the results matter the most.

And gretzky scored 92 goals in a season. There is no better goal scorer. Bossy/Ovechkin/lemieux can fight it out for #2 for now, and if Ovechkin gets the all time mark he can join that conversation

Agreed. Gretzky is #1.

Not a fluke. He would've easily hit 60 last year if it was a full season, this should be his 2nd one but obviously the shortened covid season. I think he hits it at least 3 times, I don't see any reason why he would slow down that much unless there's a major injury. He's 24 entering his prime, I see him being a consistent 50-60 guy til hes about 29 at least.
And McDavid would have easily hit 150 points last year if he had a full season in the Canadian hockey league. Those regular season stats from last year are silly and will have an asterisk next to them in time denoting that they are from the special Covid season.

Like others said, goal scorers have traditionally dropped off after 25, and he has had injury problems with his wrists. I’d say this is his peak goal scoring season, and he has maybe one more.

Without covid, it’s likely that Matthews has 4 50 goal seasons in a row with a 60 goal season in there

I watch a lot of McDavid. He does not have the legs of a 21 year old any more: He is not made of rubber and magic. He has lost a step of speed, which his style of play needs. Like everyone else, I can't see into the future but if I were a betting man and had to wager on their development charts I would say they may have different peaks, where Matthews is latter and lasts longer and McDavid's is shorter and earlier. It's probable that Matthews is just starting to peak and we will see alot more out of him than we do McDavid, in the coming years. If the leafs were to trade for McDavid, there would need to be retention on McDavid's salary, maybe make it on par to Matthews cap hit, then I may consider it. I am very happy with Matthews. A 70 goal two-way beast doesn't grow on trees. They are one in a hundred year phenomena, that is if a player like Matthews has ever existed before.

Unlike McDavid though, Matthews point/goal totals are higher this year than the "Asterisk covid year"

Goal scorers tend to have higher peaks but shorter. Look at Crosby, he stayed in hart contention for years after OV dropped to ‘just’ above average 1st line production.

I’m honestly having trouble thinking of any goal scoring talents that had longer peaks than their playmaking counterparts. Pretty silly take.

McDavid got off to a nearly 2 point per game start this season didn’t he?

Exactly my point. We know he can do it over an 82 game stretch, so why don't we just, from this point forward, call him a 70 goal scorer?
You can do all of the statistical and mental gymnastics that you want , but Matthews won't be a seventy goal scorer until he actually scores seventy goals in a single season . It really isn't a difficult concept to grasp .

Amazing shot and nose for the net, I think there's two more straight 60 goal seasons but more importantly three playoffs to get the big prize Toronto, after that your golden boy is likely gone south at age 26, what a dumb contract negotiation that was for the Leafs.

Well, considering with the law of averages after his very first NHL game he should have gotten 328 his rookie year ...he is obviously on the decline ;)

60 goals while playing for the Leafs has never been done in the 100+ year history of the NHL. I think it's safe to say that this is the moment Matthews made the Hall of fame!
Yah you are right. For all the advantages the Leafs have had over the years they have not been a good franchise.

I think you need some exclamation points after each Mathews.

At least one at the moment. I will let the future sort it self out.

Do you watch hockey? They haven’t played together in like 2 years. But yeah i guess the PP counts?

I just wish Toronto fans had the same reasoning and energy when they discredited McDrai playing together for 2 years like they do now but nah, can’t expect reason when talking hockey with Toronto fans.

McDavid and Draisaitl have played on the same line 19.9% of the time this season. This adds up to 288.18 even-strength minutes of ice time.
