How many 60 goal seasons will Auston Matthews put up in his career?

50 goals exactly. Cam Neely had a season of 50 goals in 49 games in 93-94.
Nice. Maybe a better question would be, lowest goal per game avg in which a player accomplishes 50 in 50? I was curious about the highs and lows of the season and consistency throughout, is why I asked. Guess I should've considered injuries would put it right at 50 hah!

So individual records are the top prize now? Darryl Sittler still gets you excited in 2022?
That seems like a defeatist attitude that pathetic franchises cling to.

Are LA/Edmonton/StL/NYR still celebrating Gretzky's records as opposed to their Cup wins?
Everybody remembers Sittler scoring 10 points in a game. Nobody remembers how many cups Sittler won.
Everybody remembers Gretzky's iconic record numbers. Nobody remembers how many cups Gretzky won.
And yeah, Edmonton and LA fans are always bringing up how dominant Gretzky was while playing for them.

If he doesn't this year, he might have 1-2 in him, but I wouldn't bet on it. It's very possible he has 0 by the end of his career. I figure 1 is a reasonable guess, considering how close he is now.

prolly only once. he’s certainly capable, but still, scoring 60 goals is really hard even when everything goes right during the course of a season

These are all time records you’re talking about. I think a cup would mean more than 60 goals. We’re not talking about 93 goals

1. If Ovechkin played in the same era as Gretzky and Lemieux up through 1995-96 he'd have multiple 60-goal seasons and that goes for Stamkos too. If Gretzky played from 2005 onward he would not have nearly as many goals but he'd still have huge point totals and a collection of Art Ross trophies.

2. Matthews should score 60 again, scoring is as high as it's been since the mid-90s and he plays with another 100-point player on his line which opens up lots of space (and to be clear, Marner also benefits greatly playing with Auston) and obviously is a major help in production. [And he is really really good at scoring goals to begin with]
Or maybe with scoring up this season a prime Gretzky would break 100, we have no idea.

It becomes the same old debate… goalies were obviously not as good in the 80’s but the environment was significantly more hostile, wooden sticks, heavy equipment, two line passes… whereas today Gretzky would have gotten the benefit of modern training, sticks anyone can rip the puck with etc. it’s impossible to compare eras easily.

What cannot be argued is that nobody other than Lemieux has ever been close to being as dominant as Gretzky who also did it year on year. Ovi whilst a great scorer has never been as dominant as Gretzky or Lemieux and wouldn’t be if he came upon the same era, when all else would be equal. Those two guys were outliers like no others have come close to being.

In terms of 60 goal seasons, I could see him getting another. There seems to have been a lot of career highs in goals this year and scoring is easier than it’s been in a long time. Long may it continue.

1) Of course because it's 0. You wouldn't trade his 1 game 10 PPG pace for a late 70s Leafs Cup? (Defeatist attitude).
2) Pretty sure every hockey fan knows 4. The exact goals/points numbers are only remembered when someone like Ovechkin is chasing them down. (Pop quiz: What's his assist total without looking it up?).
3) What does that buy them at the end of the day? Not even a cup of coffee.

Tough to say simply because of not knowing what his health will be like. He's a great player but seems to get injured a fair bit so it hurts his totals at the end of the season. He has the talent to get 2-3 60 goal seasons IMO.

Legit question and not trolling or hating, but what is the FEWEST goals scored by a player in a season in which they did 50 in 50?
50. The notion 50 in 50 comes from a time when the season was 50 games long. I thought that was common knowledge.
