How do you feel about the firing of Tim Peel?

Honestly, firing Peel is bullshit.

This is how NHL refs ref. He didn't do anything outside of the rules or against the norm. He's a scapegoat, which will allow the NHL to pretend they've solved the problem, and games will continue to be "managed".

Eh they didn't even use the word "fired" or "terminated"...

It's like when they take grampa's licence away because he forgets he has to check his blind spot when he changes lanes.

Timmy just forgot he has a microphone. Now he gets early retirement.

That's beside the point. They blamed Peel and aren't going to change anything.

Refs shouldn’t get on the ice or off the ice in our rink without Leafs fans being gracious hosts. We definitely need to shower them with gifts from the concessions. Like donuts, pop and prelicked cracker jacks. A little popcorn. Some waffles also for sure :)

I doubt it has any impact. The NHL had to fire Peel due to the optics and potential sports betting consequences of having a ref admit they are influencing game results.

This issue has been around as long as I know and this isn't going to fix that. The NHL needs an overhaul of the way they teach refs to do their job, and until that, firing one guy won't do a thing.

We all know game management is real, no one's surprised. Don't you think about this as a little personal considering how few calls the Leafs get recently though? No one's posted it in awhile but we've consistently been at the bottom of the league for a few years now re. penalty calls for.

It's the topic of the very first thread after the "stickies"

We could chant” Peel is better” at all leafs games to the revs. These monkeys would hate that.

NHL doesn't have an issue with it happening (likely their directive) but the issue was he was caught verbalizing it.

Easiest way out for them was to pull him immediately and pretend this was a one off. The fact that Tim Peel was retiring at the end of the season made it even easier for the NHL. Likely he gets additional financial compensation to stay quite, go away and this will be out of the majority of fans minds in the next days or weeks until something else news worth happens.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

I hope a few more of them feel like they're walking on eggshells now.

I feel good because, at least for a few months, people will be watching refs carefully. It will probably return to "normal" after that, but, for now, we may have actual objectively-refed games! This bodes well for our team.

This is exactly what I was thinking. At least for the rest of the year, people will be watching the refs closely.

If the league really cared about it they would have addressed it already because it was pretty plain to see even without this hard evidence. This is an optics thing now because not firing him would send the message that they are ok with game management. (They are)

Too bad Tim Peel didn't say "I was expected to call a penalty against Nashville next." Because that's what he really meant. Fortunately for the league they can pretend that he's some rogue official messing with the sanctity of the on-ice product.

I think a complete overhaul of how the league is officiated is required but I don't think the fans would like it. Sure plenty of people bitch about the refs and game management and all that but they are perfectly fine and really they demand playoff type officiating and situational officiating.

I would prefer NFL style. A penalty is a penalty regardless of the situation, down by a goal in the last minute? Doesn't matter. One team has had 4 penalties called on them in a row? Next one goes to who deserves it

Teams will adapt. As well - and I think this matters even if it's not on the ice. Local tv broadcasters have to be professional. No more sounding like a fan and getting all pouty if you don't like the calls against your team. Again think of an NFL broadcast and if Monday Night Football was called like a Bruin game with Jack Edwards. Makes the NHL look like amateur hour.

He got caught verbalizing it ... but it has gone on since game started ... no ones says anything as players as soon as you 'out' a ref you get blackballed ... but virtually every ref i ever played a junior or minor pro game would tell you be careful because you guys are getting da next one ... i prefer da hold ur whistle approach of playoff hockey unless a goal opportunity is stopped ... that way each team knows there will be no penalties unless it nullifies a chance at net ... much easier for a player to manage a game when he knows da rules ... and fans, some may not like it, but they get it
Hiding from a little backlash. No way man. I never would. I never did ha. Better to die on your feet than live on yer knees i say.

He wasn't fired btw.

He just won't be working any games over the next month.

He was retiring April 24th anyway. He'll still do that. Will still get whatever pension the NHL and NHLRA have set up.
Yeah it can't be any different than a regular job. You work and contribute to a pension for 30 years no matter what you do you cant just lose that. Mind you if you steal from your company you can be sued for whatever you took but they still wouldn't take your pension they would just call it restitution and take everything else.

It’s pretty f***ing disgusting that Campbell is going on the record saying that this conduct is unacceptable, when it’s a GUARANTEE that the refs are instructed by Campbell to “manage” games. This isn’t a one off. This is literally every single game ever played. What a joke.

That's not really the right context. This is normal, approved behavior for NHL officials. You don't "catch" somebody doing what you told them to.

They're just pretending like they "caught" him doing something wrong, but they're actually completely fine with it, and are just using him as a scapegoat.
Man. They caught him and it’s out there now. Its that clear enough. They caught him. Thats what caught means in this stinking brain dead society now. Nothing is done until you catch. It’s a simple concept i though everyone knew the real meaning of.
You don’t really need to verse me on anything about it. He’s caught on tape and they all threw their hands up and said, how can we defend that Peel. They would really like to but can’t. He’s a fraud on our game. Crooks.
They could be betting on games too if someone was so inquiring enough to take a deep dive in to that. Just mentioning that because if there are integrity issues within the game as we were just exposed to, how deep could that go? No facts whatsoever on that but it is warranted to be questioned.
I wouldn’t trust anyone once integrity issues are exposed in my personal circle. They could not defend him. He outed himself. They turn their backs on losers who get caught :)
