How do you feel about the firing of Tim Peel?

I think a complete overhaul of how the league is officiated is required but I don't think the fans would like it. Sure plenty of people bitch about the refs and game management and all that but they are perfectly fine and really they demand playoff type officiating and situational officiating.

I would prefer NFL style. A penalty is a penalty regardless of the situation, down by a goal in the last minute? Doesn't matter. One team has had 4 penalties called on them in a row? Next one goes to who deserves it

Teams will adapt. As well - and I think this matters even if it's not on the ice. Local tv broadcasters have to be professional. No more sounding like a fan and getting all pouty if you don't like the calls against your team. Again think of an NFL broadcast and if Monday Night Football was called like a Bruin game with Jack Edwards. Makes the NHL look like amateur hour.

I don't think the NFL is exactly a shining example of officiating. Not that I think it's easy to remedy but offensive linemen holding penalties are absolutely arbitrary. There is holding on every down as far as I can see and it is only seems to be called to manage the game. Every time a defensive end gets a half step to the outside on a tackle or a tightend he gets arm hooked and grabbed. Should be a penalty every single time but then there would be very little successful passing offense. Then there's the defensive back who all put their hands on the receivers when it's completely illegal past a buffer zone.

It's crazy that he was actually talking to a player from the Preds when he made the comment!

He’s a veteran ref," Duchene said of Peel. "It was his last year, anyway, so I think that’s maybe why they let him go, rather than maybe suspending him or fining him, but the crazy thing is that he was talking to Fil[ip] Forsberg in that clip

Yeah, it's nothing. They let him go to keep 'integrity' of the way they call game intact.

The whole world knows about game management. NHL is the only sport in world with absolutely ridiculous officiating. Nothing was ever going to change.

They'll use him as a scapegoat, he'll retire (slight blemish) but he'll definitely get his full pension.

I had hope it would change, but clearly I'm just a fool.

Basically it's an early retirement package, to give the appearances that they care about an issue, that they don't. It's window dressing.

Funny, the league had no issues with how Peel officiated until he explicitly stated what he was doing. Maybe the league hadn't gotten around to watching any of the other games Peel had officiated over his long career.

You know Buffalo is bad when the refs can't even find ways to give them a few opportunities to stay in the game.

I know the Leafs have better depth than Edmonton, but it's amazing to see the Oiler's top forwards all have an entire game of power-play time
over and above Matthews. Can you imagine adding 60 minutes of power-play stats right now to Matthews' total?

The mandate is to keep regulars season games entertaining and make sure no Canadian team steals limelight from promoting the product into the
American market during the playoffs.

Duchene is solid in my eyes now. I like stand up no B.S like that. It’s like growing up with your best buds and they call you on something. They don’t let their best friend go astray, they check you on it. That’s the way we did it growing up. We all got called out on stuff myself included. Glad to have real friends like that. Even better we are still friends 50 years later :) thats the best part of it.
Duchene has a target on him now from refs. Be interesting to watch that and i will.

The problem is way up the food chain. The NHL is run like a corrupt backwater house league by a old boys club that likes things the way they are because they’ve always been like that and this is just throwing one of the little underlings under the bus.

I’d also be interested to see the NHL “look into” all those power hungry refs who seem to game manage by vendetta like NHL games are their own personal fiefdoms. How is the product better with this culture? Why would a fan buy merchandise and support a product when part of the fan experience is getting jobbed?

On a personal level, I always feel a bit bad when someone loses their job. I know the stress that would cause me. And let's face it, how many of us are posting here while we should be working?

But something had to be done, and he has proven to be a problem in the past. He's like the #1 name when the topic of bad officiating comes up. This specific incident shows a serious flaw in the game, and the NHL needed to take it seriously.

I'm glad something was done, but it's more important that other refs know what is or isn't OK. It needs to be clear to the fans that game management is ending. Just call the infractions as best you can.

Just to be clear, I'm asking this from a Leafs fan point of view: Do we benefit and should the team be more vocal for a little while now?

It was one of the first things I thought about. I'm so exhausted watching a skilled team get penalized to create false parity. I really thought post lockout when the rules changed that things would be different, but we see it ALMOST every night. Then playoffs roll around and we not only see the even ups, but they revert back to the 90's.

Peel was a joke and good on him to end his career this way. Wake up call for the NHL. With betting going on, the last thing you want is to make it known that refs are making subjective calls that can affect the outcome of bets.

I hope some American media guy asks Bettman about the league policy. I say American because we all know about the no balls reporters we have in Canada.
Hey check out no balls D.J Smith on tsn just blowing smoke right up their yingyangs on tsn. Its gross to listen to. The league is perfect, refereeing is perfect. Gutless really because it’s what else. Backlash is no excuse for allowing “Systemic lack of integrity “. I used the word Systemic since it’s a buzz word now.
People really need to stop being slimeballs and speak thier minds. :)

NHL is worst reffed sport and this just highlights it. Change needs to occur and unfortunately the NHL is too scared to do anything

You should watch a Raps game if you think this.
Raps lost by a couple points last week and free throws were 41-14 against Toronto. Absolutely unwatchable the way the refs ruin pro basketball.

You don't bite the hand that feeds you, especially if you are not a great coach.

It doesn't seem like he lost his job at all, they said he will not work anymore games and he was set to retire on the 24th of April.
If he lost his job his union would of fought for him. All he lost would be the ceremony/video they would of done for him at his last game and without fans in the stands i feel it wouldn't matter much to him.

I think that Tim Peel is a sacrificial lamb.

What he did was wrong, but if he didn't get caught on a live microphone, life would go on as usual.

If the basis for firing an NHL official is going to be the act of handing out make up calls during a game, they'll have to fire everybody.

Actually his crap team loves fixed games that equalizes penalties. They get the advantage as a team that is building. He’s right there reaping the rewards of corruption. I don’t like the word corruption but cheaters i like, or crooking the game. Deceitful snakery i like in combination ha.
Everyone hears the word corruption now and it’s like hohum. Deceitful snakery replacing it is something I’m down with ;)

I mean good he's gone but it doesn't fix the problem when you replace him with a clone. It's a systemic issue and starts from the top. As long as we fans keep buying the product, it'll never change. Everything is economically motivated, until they have some motivation to make a change they won't. The bad calls are economically motivated, they don't want fans fan/bases tuning out, so they keep them relevant and in games. We get screwed the hardest because we are the biggest market and the league knows they'll never lose us. We were the biggest market when our team complete was completely dog shit, they have no reason whatsoever to "favor" us with calls. But some other markets/games they need to do it.

The only real solution to the problem I can think of is, that if the league lost enough money by fans not buying the product and tuning out because of this nonsense. They would be economically motivated to fix the issue or lose millions of dollars. That's really all it comes down to. Everything the league does is to grow and make money. How realistic is it for ALL nhl fans to come together like that ? Close to 0 percent.

Great start, now let's look into why we're 0-15 or whatever when one specific ref is involved in our games.

Or maybe why Marner is our top penalty drawer at 69th overall in the league with more games played and TOI than everyone else around him. Each team has 2 guys who are easier to stop legally?

Does this really surprise anyone at all?

Egg in face moment that the NHL hopes will go away quickly and quietly so that they can go back to conveniently ignoring what has been clear for years on officiating games.

It’s an absolute sham what calls get made during games, and the NHL has never given a damn before. Can’t see this changing anything.
