How do you feel about the firing of Tim Peel?

If this is the NHL acknowledging that there is an issue and they are going to work to correct it, then I am all for it.

If this is just for show, then same on them for punishing one guy out of 40 that are all doing the same thing.

In general, I want the sport to be called consistently and fairly. For example, despite being a Leafs fan, I'm highly in favour of the salary cap, because I don't like leagues where big markets can just dominate small ones by flexing $$ (emphasizing my interest in "fairness", despite the negative impact on my team).

When it comes to reffing though? Leafs are among the MOST negatively impacted in the league. We're a fast skilled team without a ton of sandpaper. Other teams hook/hold/interfere with our players constantly, because we tend to have the puck and we tend to be difficult to defend against given the speed/skill.

However, it doesn't show up on the scoresheet. We don't get a significant advantage in terms of # of penalties drawn vs taken, even though we should. Which is pretty much summarized below.

It frankly drives me nuts. I'm fine with missed calls and bad calls on occassion. But intentionally trying to call similar numbers of penalties for both teams, regardless of what is actually deserved, is bush league and undermines the integrity of the sport IMO.

Good on them? lol He’s a scape goat ...the GM directive comes from the top.
Better than them just doing nothing? Regardless of where the directive comes from, there's now public evidence that the NHL 'doesn't' want their games to be reffed that way. Obviously this does nothing to solve the problem, but it's better than them denying it happened or making an excuse.

The league needs close games for "parity" and it needs teams to be able to make the playoffs while spending below the cap. Columbus/Florida types can't survive long-term without getting a round or two of playoff gate revenue while spending a little above the floor. If you called penalties honestly, the only teams that would make the playoffs would be high-flying offensive teams that are expensive to keep together, especially with big signing bonuses expected. If the refs call the game with the intention of keeping penalties even, you can make the playoffs by building a cheap grinding defensive team that plays not to lose and makes the playoffs with 15 OTLs. This was Arizona's blueprint when they were making the conference finals, they're not trying to win the cup they're just happy to be there with a cheap roster while selling 10$ beers to out of town fans.

Pure face save, he got fired for doing his job. That the NHL encourages that type of behavior in their refs isn't even a secret.

We've been called for less and been hacked 10 times worse with no call. Just another day at the office in "The National Hockey Entertainment League". Coincidently talking about fake reality tv shows today. LOL!

I'm surprised at how many are celebrating this, as if it'll change anything.

They've told Peel to go retire 4 weeks early, with full pay, as a move to save face.

The refs follow the mandate of the league, and that mandate isn't going to change.

There is satisfaction when you realize it's all just a game for entertainment. I won't take sports so seriously anymore. I thought it was just bad calls in the past but now I see that may not have been the case at all. It's just for fun.

There is zero logic in this whatsoever.

Not to mention earlier in the year we saw Kerfoot get slammed right on the numbers head first into the boards - the ref literally had his arm part way up but put it back down because it didn't agree with the game management mo. Clearly they don't care about protecting players all that much.

You might not like the answer, but it is based entirely on logic.

Referees want to make their own lives easier. Closer games are less likely to have serious problems.

Cool we will get our turn at fun soon maybe.

The refs have always had to much personal sway in the outcome of games. imo
It’s the reason that guys like pronger and Weber are looked at as great defensive defencemen when in actuality both are horrendous hockey players that were simply allowed to throw a few dozen cross checks per game. Any other no name player would be a goon and have insane pim numbers.
The game needs to change

My feelings are that if the Leafs were in Nashville's position and had this penalty called about them, leading to Tim Peel's dismissal, there would be 45 threads on the mainboards today discussing how the league caters to the Leafs.

Is there?

Because I don't sense any satisfaction from you, or anyone else.

So the question again is: will this situation benefit the Leafs and should they be more vocal now in the short term?

Unfortunately it is much easier for Bettman to 'OFF' 1 guy as a rebel ... trying to explain da ref/coaching thing, that is uniquely Canadian, will be next to impossible to manage with both American public and with MSG gambling guys ... Bettman's gambling deal would go up in smoke faster than you can say tomorrow ... I can almost hear it - why are your linesmen yelling CLEAR CLEAR CLEAR to players on 1 team on an offside?????? Why are refs yelling MOVE IT MOVE IT MOVE IT or I'm calling you 4 for a delay?????????????? Why are refs screaming at defenders in front of net STOP DA CROSS CHECKING YA DO ONE MORE and ya going to box 6????????? or da refs going to benches to each coach and telling them to settle things down or next rough after whistle I'm gonna throw 1st guy who shoves in da box?????????????????? ETC ETC ETC it happens all game long... oh well we do that because we are coaching at same time as reffing ... refs don't want to call penalties (as former players) and they talk to guys to let them know they are game managing ... this is way it has been done for a hundred years ... it will be crazy if this actually changes ... i mean it could ... but it will be seriously CRAZY to make this kind of systemic change in officiating
