Worth? Unsigned Gretzky rookie, better shape but quite off centred.

New to the thread - used to collect hockey cards as a teenager in the early 90s...with a recent move I came across a box of cards at my inlaws place. I went to the card show in Thornhill (Toronto) on April 9th, what a zoo. Honestly surprised I didn't get covid. I was there for the sole purpose of getting a 1948 Leaf Stan Musial rookie graded, I should be getting it back in the next day or two. But I also have 30 or so hockey and baseball cards, with a Scottie Pippen rookie thrown in for good measure, that I'll be having graded by MNT grading in Elmira. Does anyone have insight as to that grading company, they seem legit but I really have no idea.

Interesting to see how the hobby has changed. It used to be all about the older cards and the Beckett guides. I'm tempted to get one of these upper deck boxes and see what I can score.

The signed gretzky is nice. Auto looks weird but, could be fine. If so, get the card and auto both graded as authentic. The card grade on both of those probly won't go above a 2, so authentic would be just fine.

Non-auto I'd guess around 1200 cdn. Auto maybe 3k? Shot in the dark though.

Thanks for the feedback. The autograph’s legit. He signed it for me at a meet Wayne Gretzky at a Burger King in the early 80’s. I’m not a collector per se but who would be the best grading company?

PSA 100% is the best grading company for any vintage. Since it has an in-person auto, I’d get the autograph authenticated by them too.

In terms of wait times, someone else could speak to that more but I do know that they are long because of high demand. I believe you can also go through a brick and mortar dealer to submit it for grading as well. Again, someone else could confirm or provide details about submissions.

For grading I've been using SGC and been very happy with them. They've been getting my orders back in 1-2 weeks and $30 a card is decent (for current prices at least). They do not do auto auth though so won't help for the Gretzky.

PSA has a $50 level they open a couple days a week if you are a member but have heard turnaround times are 2-3 months. Cheapest for a non-member is $100, I think that is 2-3 weeks.

I like PSA but I'm just not a fan of people holding onto my stuff for that long or paying that much unless it's a premium card.

When it comes to newer cards (modern) which rookie cards are most sought after? Valuable?
I see young guns, clear cut, future watch, the cup, etc. im not new to grading and buying cards of non sports cards, but modern age hockey cards seem harder to follow. Way too many versions

You answered your own question by listing the most sought after types of cards. Add Premier and O Pee Chee Platinum (parallels) as well

Back in the day, Parallels weren't considered RCs, but i guess today they are.
Back in the day (my collecting days) each player had one rookie card, no matter how many different sets released a rookie year card, only the first one was considered "the rookie card". I believe this is still the case for cards from that era (and previous eras).

Not really true. Players have mulitple rookie cards from various different companies in the junk wax era of the 90’s. Before that there was usually only one company (o pee chee/topps) hence only one rookie card. In the 50’s you had both Parkhurst and Topps, but each company had the rights to a specific team I believe so still only 1 rookie card.

In the 80s, when it was just mainly Topps and OPC, each produced a card that was considered the RC, but only the base from the first series of each set, so both can make a true RC (but, for example, if a Series 2 pack came out, and had that player on a card again that appeared in Series 1, that was not a RC, even if its the same year and was a base card).

Then when parallels came in the 90s, none of the parallels were RCs (like Topps Gold parallels, or later, chromes or refractors). again, it was only the base.

As for rumors, rumor has it the reason UD products didn’t come out was on account of them trying to sell to Fanatics but fanatics doesn’t want anything but the Lebron and Jordan exclusives. They don’t want hockey.

That’s LOL worthy fail.
That sounds like a rumor and nothing more
