Hurricanes are 1-7 with Rantanen in the lineup since the trade.

1 goal, 2 assists for 3 points in those 8 games.

He’s been dropped from Aho’s line to now have Jack Roslovic as his center.

This is an awful fit for Mikko.

the hurricanes are 2-5-1 since rantanen joined the lineup, actually.

Mikko is nothing without Mackinnon.

meanwhile, nathan has 12 points in 10 games without mikko. ho him

He looks awful. Signing him to 7 or 8 years could look awful real quick like meier and lindholm. Don't do it anyone. Don't pay him like there's no tomorrow

So they decided to replace him with necas for a fraction of the cost
Necas ain't "cheap" either, at $6.5 million vs. Rantanen's $9.25 million - just a 2.75 difference. And at this rate, Necas will also ask for at least 10+ (probably 12~) with an increased cap.

It's MacKinnon who should be getting extra, as he seems to create 100 point wingers as a hobby.

I think he learned that from some guy he knows named Sid.

I have a feeling that Ranto ends up crawling back to Colorado in the off-season but it would not surprise to see him get dealt from Carolina because they could still get a haul for him based on reputation from some team that might be desperate to take a chance.

Neither Colorado nor Carolina won this trade, Necas did though because that dude's going to get paid with his next contract after he plays another season in the Makar-MacKinnon nexus.

Florida just seems like a natural, perfect fit for Rantanen. Bennett + 1st is comparable to the Necas package right?

How’s this for crazy?

To Canes
EP40
Suter (probably re-sign, great middle six utility guy… or just a rental)

To Panthers
Rantanen

To Canucks
1st Carolina
1st Panthers
KK
Bennett (comes with extension… probably Lindholm esque)

Carolina ends up paying Necas + Drury + KK + 1st for EP40 and Suter. Not too bad coming out of a bad situation with Rantanen. Carolina has an amazing cap sheet so they can easily bear that 11.6M risk. Petey would probably excel playing in a less microscopic market and behind Aho. Canes finally land their 2C.

Lundell is more than ready to take the next step and they probably don’t want to pay Bennett his next deal. Not many chances to get a game breaker like Rantanen. Surrounded by great players he would do well. Package isn’t too far off from. Probably isn’t enough from the Panthers end if I had to guess.

Canucks and EP40 finally get to go their separate ways and put the drama behind them. No elite talent coming back but very much quantity instead of quality. Bennett and KK provide much needed center depth with Chytil in the mix. Canucks would use their first rounders to get more top six forwards in the offseason.

If they throw a bunch of money at him that is turning similarly into the Meier deal for NJ.

Rant is clearly not clicking in his new environment and it really looks like he was relying on mackinnon for a lot.

Cut out the Canucks and this gets easier and a lot more interesting for Carolina, I feel.

Suter is exactly what we don't need more of...bottom-6 Cs. KK isn't the bad deal everyone thought he is...he's just over-slotted. Aho, Bennett, Staal, Kotkaniemi...I like that C depth. We keep out 1st. We don't take the risk on Pettersson not living up to that contract.

Rather make a deal with Florida directly for Bennett.

Edit: My 1st choice remains extending Rantanen, but if we've decided to make a trade...

Trading Necas for Rant and than loosing him for nothing would make it one of the worst Trade in the past few years

I was loosing my shit when Bergevin let go Danault for nothing, I'd riot if it had been a player like Rantanen

Maybe try to trade him for something that would be helpful and not a bag of nickels
it was an honest question. Carolina can try to go for it this year and use him as a rental just like last year with Guentzel.

Not sure Mercer is a bag of nickels or what you would expect back in a trade for a rental.

Penguins were in the same spot with Guentzel and ended up with Bunting Koivunen and a 1st.
