Brock Anton

It’s only 8 games, but I’ve yet to be impressed enough to think this guy is worth $14M for the next 8 years.
He isn't. Those guys drive lines. Rants doesn't do that. He was coasting in colorado for the past year with Mackinnon and makar feeding points to him. It’s only 8 games, but I’ve yet to be impressed enough to think this guy is worth $14M for the next 8 years.
Hurricanes are 1-7 with Rantanen in the lineup since the trade.
1 goal, 2 assists for 3 points in those 8 games.
He’s been dropped from Aho’s line to now have Jack Roslovic as his center.
This is an awful fit for Mikko.
Mikko is nothing without Mackinnon.
Necas ain't "cheap" either, at $6.5 million vs. Rantanen's $9.25 million - just a 2.75 difference. And at this rate, Necas will also ask for at least 10+ (probably 12~) with an increased cap.So they decided to replace him with necas for a fraction of the cost

It's MacKinnon who should be getting extra, as he seems to create 100 point wingers as a hobby.
Cut out the Canucks and this gets easier and a lot more interesting for Carolina, I feel.Florida just seems like a natural, perfect fit for Rantanen. Bennett + 1st is comparable to the Necas package right?
How’s this for crazy?
To Canes
EP40
Suter (probably re-sign, great middle six utility guy… or just a rental)
To Panthers
Rantanen
To Canucks
1st Carolina
1st Panthers
KK
Bennett (comes with extension… probably Lindholm esque)
Carolina ends up paying Necas + Drury + KK + 1st for EP40 and Suter. Not too bad coming out of a bad situation with Rantanen. Carolina has an amazing cap sheet so they can easily bear that 11.6M risk. Petey would probably excel playing in a less microscopic market and behind Aho. Canes finally land their 2C.
Lundell is more than ready to take the next step and they probably don’t want to pay Bennett his next deal. Not many chances to get a game breaker like Rantanen. Surrounded by great players he would do well. Package isn’t too far off from. Probably isn’t enough from the Panthers end if I had to guess.
Canucks and EP40 finally get to go their separate ways and put the drama behind them. No elite talent coming back but very much quantity instead of quality. Bennett and KK provide much needed center depth with Chytil in the mix. Canucks would use their first rounders to get more top six forwards in the offseason.
it was an honest question. Carolina can try to go for it this year and use him as a rental just like last year with Guentzel.Maybe try to trade him for something that would be helpful and not a bag of nickels
Mercer isn't bad by any means but to send him to a direct rival in the Devils it would require an overpay from them in order to do that.it was an honest question. Carolina can try to go for it this year and use him as a rental just like last year with Guentzel.
Not sure Mercer is a bag of nickels or what you would expect back in a trade for a rental.
Penguins were in the same spot with Guentzel and ended up with Bunting Koivunen and a 1st.
If NJ offered Mercer + a 1st, and that’s the best offer they get, I’d take that and run. (Then also try flip those assets for Pettersson)Mercer isn't bad by any means but to send him to a direct rival in the Devils it would require an overpay from them in order to do that.
Their top 9 would then be Hughes, Hischier, Bratt, Meier, Rantanen, Palat, Tatar, Noesen, Haula... uhhhh that's a big time no from me dawg.
We're also not in the same position as Pittsburgh was in last year. I'm not opposed to trading him but get him the hell out of the east and definitely not in division.
If Canes retain another 50% on Rantanen then the team acquiring him would be getting him at 25% of the full amount. Have to imagine there are a ton of teams who would be giving good offers for that.
Sure... IF it's the best offer but I'm not sure that would be the case. Of course we don't know but I doubt this will be a closed bidding process if it does come to be.If NJ offered Mercer + a 1st, and that’s the best offer they get, I’d take that and run. We dodged the Pettersson trap. Stop trying to run back into it.If NJ offered Mercer + a 1st, and that’s the best offer they get, I’d take that and run. (Then also try flip those assets for Pettersson)
I’m failing to see how this deal wasn’t beneficial to Colorado.I think he learned that from some guy he knows named Sid.
I have a feeling that Ranto ends up crawling back to Colorado in the off-season but it would not surprise to see him get dealt from Carolina because they could still get a haul for him based on reputation from some team that might be desperate to take a chance.
Neither Colorado nor Carolina won this trade, Necas did though because that dude's going to get paid with his next contract after he plays another season in the Makar-MacKinnon nexus.
I think part of the problem is that both players - Rantanen in particular - seem to have been surprised by their trades. If they acquire a player who is looking forward to being traded, I think it would have a much different outcome for them.If the Canes can't re-sign this guy, they need to quit making these types of trades. Last year it was Jake that they lost in the summer for nothing.
