Looks like a good time to try flipping a Matthews YG PSA 10. Going north of $2.5k now. Paid $325 just 2 years ago. Wondering how many shill bids on E-Bay, though. One auction has higher bids than current buy it now options. Does not makes sense.

Anyone selling cards on E-Bay? I have been weary getting into the E-Bay game. Worried about fraudulent claims of "did not receive" or bait and switch operations. How do you protect yourself from scammers or does E-Bay eat the cost in those scenarios?

I've been selling on Ebay for years. I stopped selling cards for a time because of the scammers. Sending to Canada was the worst. As soon as it hit the border, they would file an item not received claim. Ebay's rule was they would side with the buyer if the post office did not mark the package as delivered. Canada Post never marks international mail delivered. I got hit like 5 times before I stopped.

I started listing cards again recently due to inheriting a literal store size of a collection. I've sold some high dollar cards and have had no issues. They updated their policies a bit. Plus, I usually list cards for more than they're worth and take offers so I can kind of screen the buyer before accepting an offer. I only ship international orders via their global shipping program which is very expensive to buyers, but covers the seller. I'm sure I've missed out on sales from people not wanting to pay a high shipping expense, but it is well worth it to me.

I ship a fair bit the other way. Ebay's shipping fees are $12 CAD to the USA, which isn't horrible. It includes $100 of insurance and provides tracking.

You can't even ship the old way anymore, $2.90 letterpost. Customs have started scanning letters for non-paper items, including top loaders. So those do not get across in lettermail anymore.

Basically means I can no longer ship low priced (less than $40) cards across the border. There is more protection though.

I haven't really collected since the 13/14 double rookie crop but I like to check in occasionally to see what the stuff looks like and I'm always amazed how Upper Deck can seem to put out worse and worse looking stuff for double the price. I wasn't a huge fan of most of the stuff Panini put out when they had a license either, though they did have a few cool looking products. I'd probably legit get back into it if Topps got an NHL license, they always seem to put out solid baseball products that look good.

Just started picking up a few cards. Decided i would go with slabbed cards and go for 10s since i wont be starting a huge collection. Im unsure if i want to get the lafrenierre canvas card because it is terrible looking. I also want to get a mcdavid canvas but I already blew my buget on the rest of these cards. Hopefully it doesnt go above the approx $1500 value soon.

I will get the Schneider and shesterkin graded myself unsure if i want to use beckett whos local to me or send them to SGC.

The seller of the lafrenierre was amazing. He gave me a shit ton of bonus rangers cards. It will be nice to display some of those cards as well as these slabs.

I also picked up the lafrenierre collection because i really like 3 of the cards in that set.

It’s crazy how far/high PMG stuff has gone. A big reason for that is the crossover of basketball guys getting into hockey now and realizing hockey cards in general are underrated.

About 6-9 months ago there was a big push on Limited Logos for the same reason. I think those are gonna take another big leap again soon (along with other rare/high end stuff especially anything where there’s a crossover from other sports like emblems of endorsement). One of the big issues holding that back though is that 90% of the best of the best Limited Logos and some other things are consolidated in the hands of 10-20 guys who won’t let them go, so there’s rarely any sales for them, especially public sales.

Their slabs are really nice, better than Beckett and they grade hard, go to their website, you can search pop counts, they grade as hard as Beckett IMO, and their prices are really great, same with turnaround time. I haven't used them yet but have researched them a fair bit and plan to use them when I submit my first order.

Alexis Lafreniere #201 population count.

MNT Grading 2(10) 68(9.5) 38(9)
Beckett Grading 1(10) 51(9.5) 35(9)
PSA Grading 83(10) 160(9) 35(8)
Unless we see % couldnt that just mean that the places you deem the easiest (psa) have a lot more submissions? Dosnt mean they grade easier does it?

A PSA 10 is different from a BGS 10. PSA 10 just means GEM MT, BGS 10 is Pristine, which is a higher grade that isn't offered by PSA.

A PSA 10 is on par with a BGS 9.5

Yes I know that. A perfect 10 all around is a black label with BGS is it not?

But still wouldn't the fact there are way more PSA 10’a compared to MNT just mean that they receive way more submissions, meaning a higher chance of being more 10’s?

In order to accurately determine who is tougher on grading wouldn't a % of 10 relative to how many submissions are made be the more accurate method?

They are all mint condition, I guess that the mass production of cards during the collecting boom of the 90's is the reason for lower values. I have Lindros and other big names from that era as well and my overall collection numbers 10-15k in hockey cards.
If they grade to PSA 10, those cards routinely sell for $100+ to $300ish. But those cards are tough to find in mint even pack fresh and PSA grading fees are significant.

BGS has two 10s. Gold label means one or more subgrades was below 10. Black label means all subleases are 10. BGS 10 gold is way tougher to get than PSA 10, let alone BGS black label.

Guy should have cracked it.

I sold four McD Cup rookies for almost a million dollars. All ungraded, but during the tail end of the pandemic. Poor fool.

I hate offering up leads here only because I have been buying shit dirt cheap, but….

Buy Topps rookies. Numbers have been coming out recently that opc outnumbers Topps 3 to 1 in print run and the only thing saving it is the horrible cuts.

Pacific hockey. That’s all I’m going to say.

I just got my Mike Bossy Topps rookie back from PSA, it graded a 9. It's baffling to me that a HoF rookie like that in hockey is going for less than $1k CAD. I think I may hold onto it.

I have them in plastic sleeves and they are mint. Fedorov, Bure, Jagr, Sundin, Forsberg and so many other rookie cards from the early 90's.

So would I. Hell, I’m buying all low grade 70’s Topps hockey right now.

Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever even seen a Bossy 9 with my own eyes let alone owned one. Where did you keep that?

If they are “mint”, you should get them graded. That shit is going to spike.

90 score high grades will be the standard rookie because of the red boarders. I can see Brodeur 10’s at 500 in a couple years, easy.

And I’m not saying that because I just nabbed a case for 85 bucks. The chances I pull a 10 are low.

I bought a set of 1978 Topps for $40 about 9 years ago. The Bossy looked good so I sent it in for grading.

Mine are mostly Upper Deck. How much is a Teemu Selanne rookie going for?

In the environment the hobby is in right now, you can probably get 100 raw copies of a Selanne rookie for around 25 bucks.

I cannot stress enough how junk wax legends in hockey are the Best Buy’s you can make for the future.

Something weird happened from the 90s to the late 2010s. It used to be well known that for 89-90 OPC/Topps, it was well known amongst everyone that OPC went back to the presses that year and reprinted a TON and thus any RC shared between the two sets, the Topps version was rarer and more expensive. Especially the Sakic RC (but not the Fleury RC since that was OPC only). Now, it seems like OPC is selling for more or about equal.
