Hockey Cards - Part III

I have a ton of cards from when I was a kid, like easily over a 1000. I’ll have to check to see if I have anything good from them… but not sure what’s even considered good lol.

(Ik I have one with Crosby and Lemieux in his llast game played together . Not sure if that’s any good)

Anyway just posting here cuz I want to get back into collecting and not sure where to buy em now. I’ll read up in the thread to possibly find some answers.

Would love to start with collecting some Rangers ones

I just got back into the hobby this year. I found that I really like the OPC and OPC Platinum Marquee Rookies, since they're a little more obtainable but still nice. Even though many of them are not worth anything, I'm on a quest to own every one (besides parallels) that have been made.

OPC Platinum is probably my favorite set. The Marquee Rookies are sweet and it is cool they are obtainable for pretty much every player. Huge fan of the Autos too

I'm the same way with Fleer Ultras. I've been picking up some here and there. I have a couple Ovechkins, one that I pulled years ago, and another that I bought for like $30 bucks ten years ago because I was a college kid who couldn't afford a Young Guns rookie. I agree too that some of the OPC Platinums look better than Young Guns.

My favorites that I've picked up cheaply of the Fleer Ultra rookies from the 90s, that aren't technically their rookie cards but are still labeled 'Rookie', are Teemu Selanne, Jarome Iginla and Martin Brodeur as a Devils fan. Selanne's is awesome. He has no helmet on (probably taken during warmups), and his follow through on the shot looks like he's shooting the puck in the Fleer Ultra logo. Then the Iginla card is probably my favorite design of any in the Fleer Ultra series. The 1996-97 cards are sharp with the player's name in cursive on the front, in my opinion, and I've even considered scooping up some rookie NBA players like Kobe and Iverson from that year because I really like the look.

Yeah I can't wait until Platinum is released this summer. I read that there will be 100 Marquee Rookies in the set this year.

I got my 400+ card shipment from COMC finally. Got bored and built this randomly. I’ll eventually grab the base when people don’t ask more for it then some of the parallels cost.

About 6-9 months ago there was a big push on Limited Logos for the same reason. I think those are gonna take another big leap again soon (along with other rare/high end stuff especially anything where there’s a crossover from other sports like emblems of endorsement). One of the big issues holding that back though is that 90% of the best of the best Limited Logos and some other things are consolidated in the hands of 10-20 guys who won’t let them go, so there’s rarely any sales for them, especially public sales.
I’ve definitely noticed this. And it doesn’t help that all the big name players are only signing ten Limited Logos these days. A guy would have a fighting chance if they were still #/50 or even #/25. And the big buyers must have a well connected network to even find all these cards because they never seem to show up on eBay but they’re all over the big IG accounts.

I’m working towards acquiring a Crosby but it’ll have to be one of the earlier #/50 ones. I’ve got no shot at the newer ones.

Yea it’s all private sales these days and if you want one you’ve gotta uncover as many rocks as possible and pound the pavement for them (especially one that’s /10 or even /25). Then you’ve gotta basically overpay for it, at least in terms of whatever the most recent comp/sale was.

If/when there is a public one, it’s gone immediately. I saw someone pulled a nice McDavid LL in a break recently and heard that people were immediately offerings $5k+ for it on the spot.

It’s crazy, but people are willing to pay premiums for the truly rare/hot cards

Is there any way I can tell if I have a rare card just by quickly looking at it?

Wondering cuz I have a ton of cards from my past and I’m looking through all them now.

Also what’s the best site or way I can get a full rangers 2022 team set?

Yep. Limited Logos are the cream of the crop but that said there are alternatives that aren’t as expensive. I have a Crosby Limited Materials patch auto from SP Authentic that is numbered #/10 and cost me a third of what a Limited Logos #/50 would cost. Still a staple brand and still an on-card auto (though smaller patch piece) but at a much more reasonable cost.

An underrated brand that produces nice patch autos for decent prices is Splendor. There are some great looking cards to be had out of that brand and the print runs are higher than most other products the big guys sign in.

Absolutely agree. There’s some beauty SPA auto patches out there. I think they’re probably the nicest non-cup auto patches.

I do love the Splendors as well and put them right there with the SPA ones (but the actual Splendor line not the cup subset version). They were some of the nicest cards ever produced. Wish they’d bring that back. A lot of those ones though are also heavily concentrated with 5-10 guys who have the majority of them (especially the best ones).

I think I prefer the Cup subset year for Splendor but yes they are all nice. I’ve noticed a lot of the Crosby cards have been hoarded in particular.

I have this Matthews from the Subset year and it’s one of my favorite cards. Love how the blue from the jersey, patch and auto pops out of the card.

I’m not knocking anybodys hustle, but if you are posting TikTok’s about opening your card shop, are one of those idiots who would raid Walmarts at 6am and buy up all the retail so kids couldn’t get a damn blaster, and are crying poor and opening up a go fund me to keep your horrible idea afloat, I have zero sympathy for you.

Anybody with half a brain and firing neurons would tell you sports cards are the worst risk you can take. The only way you make a lot of money in this racket is if you spend alot of money and spend it wisely.

Sports cards were never some get rich scheme. This exact situation happened back in the 80’s and that was before the internet and all of those stores are gone.

This was a pump and dump during the pandemic. I really hope nobody here got burned by it.

what is currently the best/complete online database for searching a player's card catalogue
Not always complete, but searching COMC.com and checking "Include Sold Out Listings" will show you a bunch of full sets. You can filter by year and set as well.
