I really enjoyed listening to that interview. He seems like a pretty intelligent guy.

What stands out to me is that I did not hear him answer any of the reporter's questions with ant cliches. Every one of his responses were very in depth and seemed genuine.

I'd be interested to hear what a GM or scout would have to say about the way he handled that interview. I'd wager a bet that if this was the first they'd heard of him they would be fairly impressed.

If, three years ago, you told me that Ho-Sang would give that sort of interview and Marner would give the type of interview he normals gives, I'd say "f outta here!" Perceptions. They change.

Actions speak louder than words for me. Ho-Sang HAS to give an interview like that. He has no choice. Let's see this new found mind set on the ice and in the locker room and perhaps the community like Marner (if he makes the team).

He's got to do more than just have the right attitude, he's got to play hungry and motivated.

He's not as skilled as people think. He's not a marner who can get away with some questionable passes and soft board play, while refusing to shoot/taking poor shots.

Ho-Sang hasn't produced at an elite level perhaps ever in his professional + junior career (maybe one of his post draft CHL years could qualify).

He needs to realize he is going to be the worse player on his line if he's in the top 6, and his role will be to find pucks in open areas and hammer them home. He can't be a puck dominant player as he's not fast enough at the NHL level to do so and to much talent will be on his line in a top 6 role for him to be in that role often

Bolded part: Ho-Sang growing up was an elite producer but he did damage on his own. He would put the team on his back and score at will. This led to him becoming much more selfish and even in the O and A and NHL he hung on to the puck too long and never used his teammates well enough. If he can learn to trust his guys more and not try to play hero hockey at all times, I think he can be massively impactful.

Marner has had time to adjust his game and playing style to the NHL while facing NHL players. He's worked his tail off to get there. With that said, I think if you flip the situations between Marner and Ho-Sang and we've had Ho-Sang in Marner's shoes right now, I would easily argue that we have a more superior offensive player. Marner however brings more to his game than just his offense. JHS IMO has all-world talent IF he can stick in the NHL and have the time to adjust his skill to the competition level. He has more speed, better hands, and arguably as good/ better vision than Marner. He just doesn't know and never learned to use his teammates properly or play smart defensive hockey or even have a high enough IQ defensively to read plays. That's what has held him back in juniors and as a pro, aside from his attitude issues. The guy has had an absolute roller coaster of a career and has never been given much of an opportunity and still produced 0.5 ppg in the NHL (in limited games) on a stingy Isles team.

In a vacuum with good players and stable playing time, Ho-Sang IMO is easily a 60 point player in the NHL at the moment. If he was to play up to his potential, he could be a PPG+ guy. But you'll probably have a better time at winning multiple lotteries than him reaching that PPG potential. But I would happily take a middle 6 guy who can put up 50 points as long as he can figure out the 2 way game and not be a total liability.

I've pulled for a few guys in the past who were on PTOs or 1 year deals that we picked up but I think Josh Ho-Sang is a not so massive long-shot of a player to make this club. If he has his head on right, I think we found a free wallet with a couple of hundred dollars in it. I hope he can keep it together and the Leafs invest resources in him to let him become the player he can be. Even if it's on the Marlies for a bit. He needs to learn how to play with his teammates and utilize his skillset to complement the players he's with instead of being "the guy". Because he's never been effective at being "the guy" since his Malboro days.

Problem of being mentally weak? can't handle pressure?

Drouin brought those pressure on him when he sat out and expected preferrential treatment
He forced Steve Y to trade him for a player who is bound to be a cornerstone of any defence and has potential star written all over him
He signed a contract that he's not able to live up to. That's on him, all those pressure is something he brought on himself

Drouin and Sang are just modern day brats. There are brats in every facet of life, these are it

Sang just needs to put in the work, there is no pressure on him anymore. He's no longer the upcoming prospect, hes' not even in a contract to live up to. He just has to put his head down and work

This Leafs team will welcome anything different. I mean he can't be worse than Barabanov, Vesey and Petan. I mean we gave them plenty of opportunities to make the team

Heck Simmonds still has a job with the Leafs. I mean if he can do it, really it's on him not to make the team

I don't want to be rude but mental illness is a product of imbalances in brain chemistry, often times these imbalances can express themselves as anti-social and selfish behaviours. Once treated with anti-anxiety, anti-depressant type drugs that can re-balance the chemistry these individuals can go back to a normal life. Pressure has a lot to do with it, meeting expectations of the people around you, meeting the expectations you put on yourself can create a situation where the chemistry gets fuddled, it doesn't take long to slide down a very slippery slope. I know

He looked great out there. After he missed that shot you could tell it got in his head a bit.

All world skill.

Give him some time and hopefully he can make an impact.

There's really no reason not to let him play half the year for the Marlies and see if he can't get the bad habits out of his game. He could really be a great addition in the 2nd half after we sort out who the passengers are on the team. He has great skill but there are simply too many NHL forwards to give him a shot at the start.

He started well but after the first he played above the puck in our end and stated deep in the ozone even when the puck was heading up to the blue line. He needs to walk the walk. He talked the talk but showed that he still needs to mature in his approach to the game. If he will sign a two way deal like 150 for the AHL and 750 in the NHL it may pay off late in the year.

You see turnovers like he had tonight from all the top skill players, Tavares had at least one himself tonight. Problem is tho that he isn’t productive enough to overlook the deficiencies. I feel like Galchenyuk is a less talented Ho-Sang that finally figured out he had to bear down and forecheck like a lunatic to stay in the league. Maybe josh puts it together on the Marlies and turns into a solid top 6 guy. What an enigma that guy is; he is so smooth and quick.

Ahaha here comes everyone saying sign him up for a contract. Literally last week had people call me an idiot for saying he was going to impress in camp. Like I’ve said since July 1st in this thread. He can play, I don’t know if he’ll start with the leafs but you can never have too much talent on your roster. He’s got the chemistry with JT and he can skate. He looked good tonight

The skill level is obvious. He can play. Top 6 skill and has the ability to play with high-end pace.

Wouldn't be opposed to signing him, but I definitely see some red flags in his game. Only a pre-season game but when he's frustrated offensively, he gives up on assignments in transition. It's not just off-ice attitude with him (overblown). It'll be hard for this player to iron out his shift-to-shift/inconsistent effort issues. He can think the game, it's a compete level problem.

He'll need to have a motor like Galchenyuk to be given a chance, and even if he can show that for a stretch, I think he reverts back to his bad tendencies even quicker than Galch did. Just a prediction.
