It makes a lot of sense to have him in camp, even if he doesn't land a contract with the organization. He's going to be playing RW on the top 2 lines during these preseason games, where Marner and Nylander would normally be. So the linemates, like Bunting and Tavares, get re-adjusted to playing with a high-tempo guy in that spot, but Marner or Nylander don't have to play each game.

I hope he makes it work with the Leafs or Marlies. But even if he doesn't stay, he's serving a purpose.

I'd have liked to see Ho-Sang again tonight. I imagine he will play Wednesday vs Ottawa.

As another poster mentioned, if you can have him succeed on a line with Nylander-Tavares at 750k, that would be huge for the depth of the team.

if he can play with JT you might see Willie up with Mitch and Matts

Nylander - Matthews - Marner

Bunting - JT - Ho-Sang(they looked really comfortable together)

Josh looked really good IMO

That line was all over the puck. JHS clearly still has the skill to play in the NHL, and showed a little tenacity at times in his puck retrieval. He was skating very well throughout the night, and showed some really good anticipation all night.

I'm not sure how lines will shake out at this point. I can't say I have ever formulated a lineup with Bunting - JT - JHS as a line lol, but they really did seem to compliment one another quite well. Albeit very small sample size.

At this point I really have no clue what to expect opening night. All I know is that if Josh's play continues like the way it was on Saturday, I think he deserves a contract. He's saying all the right things and so far he looks like he can still very much play.

Not a fan. Nylander and Marner should be driving their own lines. Nylander will just hover around the ice on that line being a shadow of his total skillset. I like it for final 2 minutes of a period though.

Well said.

I am actually shocked when posters question his skill, he was a 1st round draft pick, and was always extremely talented.

Between his ears is another story.

I like him when he’s a happy soul like he is now. Sometimes you have to lay down the sword and just enjoy life. Nice to see him enjoying it.

To be honest, if Ho-Sang works well with JT, I would SERIOUSLY consider moving Nylander to a line with Kerfoot and someone else. Create three lines, give them all around the same ice time, DARE teams to shut all three down.

stands to reason that ho-sang will require coaching and time at this level to figure it out. Starting with the Marlies could be great for him
But the problem is, when JHS goes to the minors, he sulks and thinks he doesn't belong there. Then, he thinks he doesn't need to be coached. He did it time and time again with us. He should have tore up the AHL, but it never happened. He even had an interview once after he was sent down where he said something along the lines of 'the Islanders were winning when I was in the lineup, now I'm here and look at their record'. He had plenty of preseason interviews that sounded like he got it...just wait for the ones in season.

Not here to rain on a parade, if the kid gets together it's just another exciting player to watch. I have no qualms with that. Just don't think it's going to happen ...the whole fool me once thing.

This is where I’m at. They’d all play together on the 1st PP anyhow to get the minutes up. 34 & 16 would play a bit more 1 V 1 lines

I think this is what we are still waiting to see with JHS.

The fact that he has openly came out and said he would start in the ECHL if that was what was required to stick around is telling to me. Of course this could all be just lip service, however it does look to me from an outside perspective that he understands that starting in the minors is a very likely possibility. I suspect he will do exactly what Gally did last year and prove that he belongs in the NHL shortly thereafter.

His game is good enough, if his mindset continues to be positive/team first, I see no reason why he would not get a contract. My only fear is that his prior reputation will precede him. Wherein maybe if players knew the "old version" of JHS, they may perceive this version of him to be fake. I don't put that as a high likelihood though, as he seems to be decently connected in the GTA hockey community. He trains with Simmonds at Matty Nichol's gym in the summer, and was on the island with JT. Ultimately they will know if he has changed his ways. It is easy to fool management, it's an entirely different beast fooling your peers. I really don't think he is doing either TBH

Still early in camp but as it stands right now it's tough to see an open spot right now for Ho-Sang.

It's a numbers game.

Realistically, he's on tryout with us but not for us. He could very well end up on another team that desperately needs his skillset.

Yep, I've always assumed that to be the case.

I read this post in Jon Lovitz voice.

If he shows game in his next outing, I'd offer him a league minimum contract.

Chances are high, that he doesn't make it to the Leafs, but then, if he'd clear waivers, send him to the Marlies... He should be a PPG guy at this point, and help the Marlies squad, and our players developing there. Work with him, and try and bring his game to the NHL level. No question, he'd help the Marlies, could be an ok injury replacement (We don't really have a better RW on the Marlies to fill in with the Leafs if needed)

If he gets claimed, so be it. At least the kid has a contract then.... but chances are low he'd be claimed.

Sound plan.

Can't they just sign him to a (rich) Marlies contract and not need to put him through waivers?

Sure, but would he sign that(?), and he couldn't be called up quickly if needed on the Leafs... half of the plan would be to have injury replacement.

This is what I've been thinking a lot about actuality. Make Nylander a rover. Have him on a line with Spezza and Kase. Give him PP1 duties and throw him in the top 6 periodically throughout the game letting guys like Ritchie and Wayne have some rest.

I think he meant a league min NHL contract with a high AHL salary.

Gets Ho-Sang some money and will potentially stop other teams from wanting to put in a waiver claim.
