Post-Game Talk: Hellebuyck and the Paper Jets beat leafs 4-3

If this was a one off game for Freddy, it wouldn't be a big deal. Good goalies have bad games. But Freddy has been bad for a year and a half now. 909 last year was not good enough. 903 this year is awful, especially considering that our defense is doing so well. We put 40 scoring chances on Hellebucyk last night at 5v5. 15 high danger chances. Those are absolutely insane numbers. We allowed 15 chances and 6 high dangers. The team played their butts off and our goalie lost. Lots of stuff for the defense to learn, Winnipeg is the only other elite offensive team in the division and we can't be giving them some of those chances. But we dominated play and the team should feel good about that.

I am getting a little concerned that this team is starting to chew up goalies. Sparks and Hutchinson were run out of town with the hounds at their heels, and it feels like Freddy is in line to follow suit. We've got a real opportunity to go deep in the playoffs this year and we need strong goaltending. I love Campbell as much as you guys, but he's played 9 games for us. Ultimately, I don't care if it's Freddy in net, Campbell, or some random that we trade for, I just want a .915 goalie for the rest of the season and the playoffs.

Just like my buddy said..... fantasy has ruined my fandom.
as a Hellebuyck owner I wasn't upset the Leafs lost lol
Time for them to get back on the winning side.
This is why I don't do fantasy. I did a pool with money one year, won $150 or so, hated every minute of it.

Hellebuyck was making some ridiculous saves and Andersen looked a little slow on one goal, it is what it is.
I'm convinced he's dealing with a groin strain and laboring on the quick stretches, it's a nasty injury because it could painfully let go at any time, look at what Stamkos has gone through. We've got 2 injured goalies and they have a world-beater. This is where we need that 1B goalie to take a load and we don't have it, what's the point of attacking Andersen? You have to play a solid def. game and ask your goalie to be solid and not spectacular.
Put Hutch in then. Don’t make excuses for him or the G.M or coach. If he’s not feeling it sit. Making up excuses just doesn’t give points in the standings. He’s been playing like crap most ofbthe season. Thats decline we are seeing. We need to not trust him any further.

Beat once again by a goaltender, and this time our goaltender not being at his best. 4th goal should have never happened. Looked to me Andersen was afraid of the contact Appleton could have brought. Had he come out and challenged that goal doesnt happen. He could have simply poke checked and that goal didnt happen.

still trying to figure out which of the goals Peg scored posters believe were soft ?

both goalies let in exactly the same type of goals

-both goalies let in a goal off the rush from piss poor coverage
-both goalies let in a deflection
-both goalies let in a goal from a wide open player 3 feet out from off a beauty set up

the only difference was Freddie let in an extra goal from a sweet foot wedge by Mathews

but hey we lost so lets blame the goalie , lol , guess we can't expect Capt Mumbles to show up and win us a game for 11m per

Guess I was replaying the game in my mind and trying to figure that out as well. Admittedly, I was having trouble figuring which of the goals were obvious (classic) weak goals.

I think we need Matthews 100% healthy in the playoffs. Yes, he got 2 goals last night with a gimpy wrist, but Matthews is the key cog in our offense. We can often outscore our opponents regardless of what type of game it is with Matthews in the lineup & healthy. jmho.

As an aside, Hellebuyck has had some rough stretches this year as well.

This game and both Vancouver games certain players hadn't looked as sharp but the team was still getting a lot of chances.

But their goalie was the 2nd best goalie in every game.

This too shall pass.

I see a lot of opinions about goaltending here but very few mention why Dubas hasn't invested much in the way of drafting.
Vancouver has drafted Demko, Dipietro, Silov. Demko being developed internally allowed Benning to play harball with Marky and looks like he's got a chance to be elite. The other 2 are both trending very well with both looking like potential Nucks.
Having cheap goalies on RFA and elcs would certainly help the cap crunch that may very well cost Hyman if Dubas ends up upgrading on whoever is the starter once Cambell is back.

He's been here 2 years

chewing up goalies?

please, name 1 goalie we "chewed up" that went on to prove out that they did not earn it

not one of our chewed up tenders has show to be even a decent starter

Probably enjoy the fact that he has 23 points in 27 games, is doing the little things, and has been more energetic this year in comparison to last. ...
He looked solid last night. Sets up Matthews to give us a shot, gives us the PP for our final lead of the game. His line was our best (again) yesterday

What was your argument then? It wasn't factual, or even logical - so it was safe to assume you were simply biased.

Biased towards what?

You said the Leafs are a better team, which in many respects they are. However the goaltender is also a part of the "team". A huge part in fact. Until that area of concern is addressed, I'd say it's up for debate who the better "team" is. Pretty simple.

No big worries here folks ... we were better team on creating great chances, puck possession and shots ... we carried that game almost completely start to finish and Jets know it too ...
Hotpaws has made some good points on Freddy and although I don't like Freddy anymore, like most I gave up on him after play in round, it is not because of last night ... Freddy is a BIG body goalie who relies on butterfly technique and Elkin positioning to play ... and last night there was not a playoff muffin goal like we all saw against CLB in game 1 on da floater wrister ... that is a completely separate issue which will occur again with a 0-8 non-clutch goaler ... but we all have to understand Freddy is NOT an ATHLETIC goaler like Price, Binner, Fleury, Helle, Crawford or Vasi ... he does not have athletic reflexes to quickly move up his blocker on Matty's own goal ... he does not have athletic reflexes to quickly react, on a speed breakaway like on Peg's 4th goal with a pokecheck like Blueforever75 noted ... we are all expecting him to make those 2 saves when reality is he is not an athletic goaler ... he never has and never will make those saves and as his reflexes get slower as he ages we will see even more of those type of goals ... you can't just look at kill zone chances and determine a hockey game it never ever has been that way throughout history of hockey ... a hockey game is a bunch of individual plays ... big time goalers make big time saves in big time playoff games as Scotty used to say ... our guy is not that ilk ... no point in getting upset with him anymore ... he is trying his best ... you have to understand what we have in Freddy ... you have to look to Dubie/Keefer and hope they make a move to get us another goaler to compliment Soupy for our playoff run ... it should save some CAP if we can get Dell back and use it to get another power LWer and another vet defender for injuries ... Freddy will never get us to promised land ... I doubt Freddy would go on LTIR to help us out although that would be best thing for team ...

To me I really worry more about Holl, Jumbo and Rielly ... now that Muzzy is wearing a full face shield he can't see puck properly and he is not being aggressive past few games and people are now seeing da true Holl when Muzzy can't manage all da f*ck ups ... Muzzy will get mask removed at some point and everything will be fine again ... good thing is now everyone knows what a lot of us hockey defenders have known which is Holl has benefited greatly playing with Muzzy ... again I don't blame Holl for his*ss play or Keefer for moving him down lineup it is result of an injury only ... he is doing his best with his limited skills

Jumbo past few games has looked like a 90 year old out there ... this is very concerning ... as game pace picks up he can't stay on line 1 ... sorry folks he needs to drop to 3rd line ... Matty with his injury has dropped a step as everyone can see it and Jumbo can't help out at all getting pucks as game speed increases ... Hyman needs to be back to line 1 or someone new

Rielly got back into doing things beyond his skill levels again and cost us again last night ... that long ice weak *ss pass was a play he can't execute ... he is not strong enough to make that play ... he puck strength is just not there ... same issue with his shot as with that pass ... not strong enough
But all in all team dominated Jets which was good to see ... does not mean we beat Jets in playoffs, for reasons noted above ... but all those issues can be corrected by Dubie/Keefer

I'm not defending the goalies, they're the ones who aren't making the saves they should. But three goalies in three years dramatically underperforming is an alarming trend. I'm not blaming anyone for it or saying that we should be easier on the guys. I just want some stability in the net in the form of guys who make saves.

This game was similar to the last game against Vancouver, the Leafs were the better team, outplayed and outshot their opponents, but lost because they ran into a hot goalie. The Leafs played well except for Andersen. The North division has become tighter, but the Leafs are still the strongest in the division.

He hesitated on the fourth goal and bailed from even trying to stop it. He was almost falling out the wrong side of the net. That was disgusting effort. Above all it was poor effort. He waved the goal goodbye. How much more could the guy telegraph what he was doing,he cut,big clown hugged the post. They win. Then he probably goes in to the room and mopes. The defense minus Matthews bicycle kick was good ha
