Post-Game Talk: Hellebuyck and the Paper Jets beat leafs 4-3

He hesitated on the fourth goal and bailed from even trying to stop it. He was almost falling out the wrong side of the net. That was disgusting effort. Above all it was poor effort. He waved the goal goodbye. How much more could the guy telegraph what he was doing,he cut,big clown hugged the post. They win. Then he probably goes in to the room and mopes. The defense minus Matthews bicycle kick lol
Why are you surprised?????? He can't handle da speed and a quick move on any breakaway. He is not a 1 on 1 athletic goaler. Never has been never will be. And it will only get worse as he ages. And there is nothing he can do about it. You have to learn to accept what he is. He can't handle that speed. With a slower breakaway his reflexes are still ok but fast breakaways with a good move he can't deal with it. Not athletic enough. It is very elementary.

Depends, are we getting good Andersen or bad Andersen?

Because Andersen has a tendency of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory when he's going through a tough patch

this is true

lets not forget that there are also the many faces of Freddie, October Freddie, November Freddie December/January Freddie, February Freddie and then the dreaded March/April Freddie(which is the Freddie you're speaking of:nod:

He bailed on it. Didn’t try. Not couldn’t try,he didn’t try. Nevermind slow, why is he so far over committed

Georgiev hasn't played better and i always worry about goalies who play behind tight defensive teams like Merz , Ulmark is interesting and he's a UFA so maybe Buff would deal him if they think he's not coming back .

but if i'm going to deal for a goalie i want don't want to gamble they can be a starter so i'd inquire if Kuemper was available and pay a reasonably steep price , this is also dependent on how long he's out for

Johnny Berns is the epitome of that scenario, more 1st shot goals for 3 years running I think, and more 2-0 deficits then I care to remember

which of the goals do you think were soft ? or did they all fall under the ever popular "the goalie has to make a big save sometime" , lol , and just to refresh your memory , both goalies gave up identical goals

and silly me for expecting our 11m dollar Capt to pace better than 24g/70pts which puts him outside of the top 50 in ppg this season

tbh goals 3 and 4

He guessed wrong ... watch it again ... he gambled badly and lost .. he has to gamble when speed is coming at him and he knows it ... he knows guy coming at him has more speed ... if you played you would understand ... it is akin to a defender like myself when you see a dubois type coming down your side of ice you know you are in trouble ... so you drop back faster and give up blue line as it is your only chance ... and hope you force guy around net ... again this is very easy to understand ... it is same logic for non athletic tenders

Jets look like the one team in the CDN div that might be able to hang with the Leafs, as they have enough offense to be equally dangerous, and they have the Vezina winner in net who is a proven difference maker.
This may help Winnipeg to go deep into the playoffs, remember the 2002 Leafs? they went to the conference finals mainly because they had Curtis Joseph in net, this could happen to the Jets this year.

I'm still salty at Fred.

I'm not sure I'm salty, but I can tell you I have very little patience left for him

I said it last night and I meant it, he's fighting the puck, his positioning is suspect at best, his poor fundamentals wouldn't lead you to believe he's a veteran starter in his prime, and watching cross crease pucks just go by him with no thought of knocking them down has led directly to 3 goals in his last 2 starts

He almost knocked the post off sliding over why? He just had to take the post and react, he was sliding late, it was the sh!ttiest read I’ve seen in I don’t even know how long. He had all kinds of time to set up on the side this guy is coming. He slides, guesses wrong or whatever that was. It was rotten. He’s f**** rotten

Rask is good.

I am not sure you understand what "chewed up and spat out" means...

Give you some examples: Gustavsson, Reimer, Bernier, Raycroft, Toskala, Andersen.

Note that these guys actually played for us.

Why are you having a hard time understanding this?????????????????? Non athletic golfers have to guess as they are not fast enough/ athletic enough to make a move at same time as shooter ... Helle can wait for shooter and match his speed with his reflexes ... Freddy can't ... SIMPLE ... you are expecting too much from him ... we have a BIG GOALER who relies on butterfly technique and Elkin angle positioning system ...

LOL that cross crease from the last Vancouver game still makes me laugh. Fred tries to follow it across and I'm thinking why didn't you just put your stick out Fred it couldn't have been more than 3 feet in front of You.

This game was similar to the last game against Vancouver, the Leafs were the better team, outplayed and outshot their opponents, but lost because they ran into a hot goalie. The Leafs played well except for Andersen. The North division has become tighter, but the Leafs are still the strongest in the division.

I think the last few games are helping to emphasize what a lot of us have felt all along. Freddie Andersen is a good goaltender but not a great one. This year we've had a very good offense and defense for much of the season. When that happens, you don't need a great goaltender. In recent games we've seen some issues that haven't shown up for a while, and the team has lost. I think saying it's the Leafs running into a 'hot goalie' is not accurate, I think it's more to do with the Leafs not being as good in front of Andersen, and Andersen not being as good as some of the other goalies in the division.

I'll echo another comment made several times that it would be great to see Campbell get a few games in net to try and get an idea of what he is (or isn't). When we get to the playoffs the leash should be short if any goalie is not performing. You can't just ride with your guy because that's what you've always done.

Mike Weir is an excellent example of this

Watching the last three games makes me feel like 3 more teams in our division CAN hang with the Leafs.

Fred has not even been a "good" goalie for a season and a half now

Andersen tends to choke in game #7's and Hellebuyck is a money goalie.

If the Leafs meet the Jets in a playoff series I would give Winnipeg the advantage because they have a more reliable netminder.

Although you are right ... Keefer will not have Freddy in net ... it will be Soupy ... and it will be fine

I think that's debatable. There are plenty of teams that have had goaltending issues as much or more than the Leafs. Just look at the Oilers. The Flames have had issues (until stealing Markstrom away). Price has been extremely up and down. Vancouver's goaltending has been up and down. That's just in the Canadian division. I think he's in the middle tier league wide, but he has been trending downwards.

Watching the last three games makes me feel like 3 more teams in our division CAN hang with the Leafs.

Leafs swept Van City in the previous 3 game set quite easily outscoring them 15-5 in cake-walk wins and pretty similar our recent 3 game sweep of the Oilers 13 -1 goal differential.

Thu, Feb 4vs Vancouver W7-3 -
[TBODY] [/TBODY]
Sat, Feb 6vs Vancouver W5-1 -
[TBODY] [/TBODY]
Mon, Feb 8vs Vancouver W3-1 -
[TBODY] [/TBODY]
and this time the Leafs likely let complacency creep into their game, let that sweeping of the Oilers get to their heads, and didn't take Van seriously, but the Leafs are simply not challenged by the lower level of competition for the most part.

Montreal and Calgary have already fired their coaches because of team struggles and Ottawa is rebuilding with youth and going to finish near the bottom of the league standings. So I'm not really seeing any Cup contenders in the CDN div for our Leafs to compete against.

Jets look like the only team and mainly because of Hellebuyck outplaying Andersen, that could challenge the Leafs for the Division lead and in a playoff series that would give one a little pause for concern. IMO
