Post-Game Talk: Hellebuyck and the Paper Jets beat leafs 4-3

I think that's debatable. There are plenty of teams that have had goaltending issues as much or more than the Leafs. Just look at the Oilers. The Flames have had issues (until stealing Markstrom away). Price has been extremely up and down. Vancouver's goaltending has been up and down. That's just in the Canadian division. I think he's in the middle tier league wide, but he has been trending downwards.

.903 sv% puts him 31rst among tenders with 10+ starts

last season .909 sv% 27th among tenders with 27+ starts

with the league trending toward split starters ,,i am trying to include those systems

hence the rough "splitter" season starter numbers

.903/.909 are bad numbers from a bad tender

Andersen:

2017-2018: 0.918
2018-2019: 0.917
2019-2020: 0.909
2020-2021: 0.903

He's sinking and we're gonna go down with the ship if we keep playing him.
These stats when we are arguably the best defensively in as long as I can remember are very concerning.

I'm not sure I'm salty, but I can tell you I have very little patience left for him

I said it last night and I meant it, he's fighting the puck, his positioning is suspect at best, his poor fundamentals wouldn't lead you to believe he's a veteran starter in his prime, and watching cross crease pucks just go by him with no thought of knocking them down has led directly to 3 goals in his last 2 starts

I would have way more patience for him if he didn't come off as so arrogant. Remember when he called out the team last year after he also had a bad game then followed that up with a few more bad games? Dude, a little introspection might go a long way.

Tavares gets paid way, way, way too much.

Forget Matthews, Marner and Nylander.
Tavares was chosen as the prodigal son who has come home. Sentiment never trumps intelligence. When Marner was spoon-feeding him he had his best season EVER. Being chosen a Captain was also based on sentiment only. There is no way in hell that he's worth the money. Trade him for a #1 goalkeeper and make Hyman our Captain. He leads by example every single night. Tavares may have a strong work ethic but he isn't leadership material. For my money, Zach Hyman is the Leafs' MVP in terms of value for money, and Andersen is this team's biggest liability with Princess Nylander not far behind. You need 3 things to go deep. 1. GOALTENDING 2. GRIT 3. WISE COACHING

Wtf did I just read?

Leafs deserved to lose. They can produce a bunch of scoring chances.... AND? Guess what, teams with good defense and good goaltenders are going to eat you up if that's all you're relying on. You can't be soft with the opposition in your own end. You can't leave a defenseman, especially one who is not known as an excellent playmaker, without support in your own end. The Leafs are not doing anything physically, their structure breaks apart, they get scored on. They didn't take away the puck because they weren't working hard enough. If you want to win with Freddy, you have to play a very structured game. He's not going to make that Dominik Hasek-type save when things go hectic.

The most learned comment on goaltending that I've heard on social media this year.

It is less about those 4 goals individually. They weren't horrible. A couple had a bit of stink to them, but they weren't horrid. If this were a one off or a two off or a three off, fine. He would be off the hook.

This isn't about one goal. Or one game. It has become habitual. Which is a problem. So we can play Noodles McClennan analyst on each of the four goals and conclude in a vaccum that it wasn't a horrible night. But the trend has lasted too long and it is concerning.

Night in and night out, the other goalie is better. Or in the case of the Edmonton series, the other goalie is so bad, that the performance of our goalie can just be standard and that is more than enough to win by a fair margin.

We produced like 10 point blank chances on Winnipeg and dominated in their zone for large portions of the game (hence the hit numbers because of how much they had to chase us). The Jets have great goaltending but have a horrible defense which we exposed.

I'm convinced you never watched the game.

Watching the last three games makes me feel like 3 more teams in our division CAN hang with the Leafs.

There is a reoccurring theme here, the 'Nucks played big and dirty in their 2 games, Jets are big and physicial. If you make it hard on the Leafs, physical, chippy, take away time and space, aggressive man to man forecheck, the Leafs don't have an answer, if you give the Leafs time and space they beat you 3 games in a row where you only score one goal against them. It's the same problem we had last year, the year before, the year before, the year before.

The thought passed through my mind before the Jets tied it up, if you let the Jets hang around and don't capitalize on your chances your going to lose... we didn't and they did.

You got it correct ... great tending can hold up a porous defense some games but majority of time you win ... I still think Soupy can get us 4 wins against both Peg and Habs ... but then we need a real solid athletic tender if we play Bruins, Vegas or Tampa ... to win a Cup we need a tender who can do more than just make all da regular saves you need a Rask, Vasi or Fleury who can make some saves that make you go "H8ly F*ck did I just see that happen" ... I can't see any of our guys doing that unless Soupy runs a massive hot streak and goes lights out which he has done a few times in his past

What concerns me is that Rittich shut them out for almost 120 straight minutes. They lost twice to Demko and last night to Helley. I can hear the whining that they ran into a goalie that went into God mode and beat us while Andy shit the bed again.

Helley was pretty shaky last night, we double clutched and muffed up so many chances last night I lost count @IPS says it was 10 great chances, I don't doubt it was at least that, we could have easily scored 6, we for what ever reason were shaky with the puck. Demko was amazing though, sometimes that happens..

It was a blind guess, I don't know how many it was. The point stands that it was a game decided by goaltending.

Yup he is right but we do not seem to be able to bury our chances against hot goalies. Helley made a couple of 8 bell saves last night and we missed some golden chances.

The Leafs have the 4th best shooting% in the NHL and create the 3rd most scoring chances, 3rd most high danger chances have the 3rd highest xG for/60 and the 2nd highest goals scored/60 in the NHL.

Complaining about their finishing is akin to Jets fans complaining about Helle not stopping pucks. Stop doing it.

this is true

lets not forget that there are also the many faces of Freddie, October Freddie, November Freddie December/January Freddie, February Freddie and then the dreaded March/April Freddie(which is the Freddie you're speaking of:nod:
April is the golfing freddy not the hockey freddy

In your heart you know Freddy did not give up a softie last night ... and you know he can certainly add 1 of those in playoffs ... what scares me most is Peg in round 1 and we kill them like last night and Freddy gives up those 4 but we fight back to tie it up and then he lets in 1 softie late under pressure and we lose 5-4 ... that would be dagger of team and then Shanny/Dubie and Keefer all get fired next day ... Keefer has to be da bigger man and dress Soupy to start playoffs and then go with him to go as far as we can

Seems like a major difference between when we play Boston as opposed to Tampa playing Boston.

Vasilevsky makes those insane saves against Boston's PP with their wicked cross seam passes whereas Freddy gets lit up like a christmas tree in those instances.

The fourth goal was worse than soft. It was. Gross. He could see the guy coming down the wing, so he should have thought being a goalie and all, well maybe i should move to my right and take the post. Nahhhh he said I’ll wait until the last minute and f*** this right up diving at the wrong post. That was a catastrophe of reading the play. He has lazy brain man

Lazy brain or shaken cofidence?

He watched his team in front of him outplay the shit out of the opposing team knowing full well he's the one who made the difference the negative way. You put that adversity on Freddy and he's not the type who rises up, he crumbles.
