You’ve selected your narrative and you are sticking to it no matter the overwhelming evidence you are wrong. They have been terrible defensively in 3 games this year, tonight wasn’t one of them.
100% this.

So we out chance Vegas in both the 1st and the 2nd but Vegas out chances us in the 3rd. Funny how getting a couple saves changes perception of actual game flow.

Haven’t you also done this? Everyone has their biases. That’s why people disagree

Outchancing an opponent doesn’t mean you played well defensively. Our defensive play looked like it has always looked

Man I’d love to sit down and watch a game with you.

That was a good push comeback. It would have been epic.

I hope we keep playing like that.

A couple of disappointing goals against.

Quinn Hughes hasn't scored a PP goal during the regular season since Jan 2, 2020. 166 games. Fox hasn't since March 6th, 2021. 122 games. PP's are designed to create lateral plays, if your metric is how often they score, not many defensemen are going to appear good. I'm not sure what you mean by no pace, it's a PP, he is waiting for other players to get to their spot. I don't think Chabot is a great PP QB, there's better out there but I also don't see the issue with him there. Nor do I think a player who has 2 goals in 125 games (they came in back to back games btw) is going to solve your issue of not scoring enough.
If there's 30 seconds left in the game and Chabot has the puck in our zone, he'll kill 15 seconds of that time just standing still. I understand patience is part of starting the play, but sometimes you need to go and I find Chabot picks the wrong time to slow things down. He's pretty bad at that.

Also, to go further with your PP description with lateral plays, that's another area where he struggles. Not because he's not capable of those plays, but because he doesn't do them with the speed which would make those plays more efficient. His passes are usually a second or two later than they should which is a big deal. I honestly think Brannstrom and Sanderson have shown to be superior on the PP.

Not trying to hate Chabot, when he's on his game he's a force, but I think that's more of a 5on5/4on4 thing. He's never been good on the PP.

Not the result you want, but I thought they played a solid game outside of the breakdowns. Definitely enough that they can build off of some positives going into the next game. They desperately need to win against Philly on Saturday and start getting some momentum back.

The numbers don't really support the notion that this is a bad defensive team. They're top-10 in xGA, top-10 in scoring chances allowed, and 12th in high danger chances allowed. That seems pretty good, no? Even on the PK they're limiting chances better than they have in many years. Structurally the team is more than fine.

They are having a lot of problems with individual execution. Lots of unforced turnovers in bad areas of the ice - there isn't much that coaching can do to fix what Chabot, DeBrincat and Stutzle did tonight on the first, fourth and fifth goals tonight. They're also not getting stops on the dangerous chances they do concede [sixth worst HDSV% at 77%].

Other than the Leafs and Panthers games they've been good at 5-on-5.

Those goals had nothing to do with Forseberg. The team gave those up with sloppy play.
Sometimes you need the goalie to make a couple saves on really good chances. Anderson, Samsonov have both done it at the other end.

After 9 starts Forsberg is rocking a .898 save percentage.

obviously he's gonna have a bad save if you cherry pick it after a 5 goals allowed loss with 9 games played.

Forsberg has been one our best players this year's and is making tough saves while not really letting in any bad ones.

Don't know how this can be pinned on Anton. He's making the saves.

Branny Brann was much better on the PP than Chabot. I know his minutes are high, but TC has been playing like a #5 dman.
Chabot simply doesn't have the ability to be a shutdown dman. We need that strong #1dman who can play in all situation. Let's hope it's Sanderson.

Chabot is asked to do something he ain't suitable to do at this point and never will. He simply isn't a good defender. His strength was always skating well and moving the puck. I just feel that while he skate well and doesn't have quick feet. He make good pass, but they are slow.

There are #1 dman who are not great at defending but they are excellent at creating offensive situation. Chabot is simply not that unless he show a new offensive gear.

Fun but extremely weird game. Was awesome being back at the rink.

Individual gaffes notwithstanding, I thought the defence played... fine? Not outstanding. You just can't repeatedly put the puck on the opposing team's stick and expect things to go well. The little mistakes really add up and this is a game we'll be kicking ourselves about later in the season when we're looking to make up points. It was so winnable.

I’m not pinning any of the losses on Forsberg. I’m simply saying it would be nice to have him save a couple of the great scoring chances and steal a game. The stats show we are outchancing the other team in all 4 wins and 3 of the 6 losses.

This is the problem with Chabot in a nutshell, even at 5 on 5. Right decisions, just waaaaay too late, every time. It's easily one of the most frustrating things I have ever seen at the NHL level.

When this team blunders, it is a massive blunder. There were a lot of points during the game that I saw our team running around, or watching the play. Granted, they looked better as the game went on, but I've seen too much watching lately and not enough active play. They need to want the puck in all zones. They also need to lock on to whatever player they are supposed to be covering and stop with this chicken head cut off business. I've seen too many missed assignments that have cost the team in goals against. Enough of it, they need to play better as a team defensively going forward.

Even the Leafs game was pretty even 5-on-5:

Obviously the Panthers game was by far our worst. Every other game was either equal 5-on-5, or we completely dominated.

Lacking confidence and gripping the stick too tight. He's been waiting for this season for 5 years now. He needs to relax.

I am just not that confident in this teams defense getting better. I just don't think they will magically all of a sudden be able to start playing better defense as a team. I really do think Smith needs to go and bring in a coach that can install a better defensive system.
