I mean... It's not impossible?. Smith needs to chill the f*** out in the net and #97 needs to keep up the gretz/lemiux-like performance? For me it's the most unlikely scenario left but who knows man.
As I said: bookmarking this...

watched every single game of those seven against the bolts, you were so effin close.

No we weren't.

On paper means nothing these days, the NHL playoffs being a perfect example of this. This team was not built well and it showed, they were very lucky to medal let alone get silver.
They beat Czech Sweden and finished third in their bracket and just lost in overtime what are you talking about.

Sillinger ”high stick” was a bad call, but I don’t understand complaining about that Chabot penalty. Am I seeing wrong or doesn’t Chabot literally wrap his stick around Björninen, get it stuck between his legs and yank it around? That should always be a penalty.
He dove, very obvious in the replay. Then grabbed Chabots foot at the very least it could have been coincidentals.

Anyways bad calls happen, hopefully next year they can get better refs in such an important game.

Yes i'm sour.

Not sour that Finland won because it's great that they won on home ice and they get to relish this moment in time and it's not like you dont do everything and anything to win

I'm sour because the refereeing is so incredibly pathetic and that the culture in hockey (a physical sport) has come to the point that players can act dive and flop their way to power plays that have a monstrous impact on results.

When ice hockey climbs out of a cave and gets to point of using VAR appropriately hopefully we can watch teams win and leave with a full feeling of accomplishment and not having to have salty discussions about circumstances that shouldn't have existed to begin with.

Here are some facts. There's been 8 best on best tournaments with NHL players, 5 olympics and 3 World Cups. Three most succesful countries on best vs best and none best vs best are quite clearly Canada, Finland and Russia.

Medal amount:
Canada 6
Finland 5
USA 3
Russia 2
Sweden 2
Czech 2

Not best vs best during last 10 years:
Russia 8
Canada 7
Finland 6
Sweden 4
USA 4

So shouldn't Canada and its C team safely beat that little Finland with a few NHL players? So when he's holding the number one team with a huge lead?

If we are talking about OT, the punishment for Nylander was also quite controversial. Who knows, maybe Sweden would win the match and they played for the medals. And Canada and its fans would have no reason to watch this insignificant tournament and could watch SC all the time.
Canada's C team was quite close to beat Finland's B team. That's fair to say.

I would love to see how Canada's A team fares with Finland's A team. Add Barkov, Laine, Rantanen, Aho, Teräväinen, Hintz, Saros etc., and I am quite sure we still have the edge of playing with better system and better as a team, while you still have the advantage of higher individual skill.

The A team of Finland has had a quite good track record even against the mighty A team of Canada.

The tournament format of the last World Cup was a joke, and that tournament should really not count, at all. But I guess it doesn't change the stats too much.

True. People just use best on best as an argument to downplay Finland national team success, but overall we have been the most consistent medal country with Canada, whether it's best vs best or not.

I don’t think he dove at all. Look at how players react to spearing. In a slow-mo replay you can see Björninen flinch from the first hit on the cup and then falls from the second one, looks like a natural reaction to me.

Good game Canada. Your team was very good, but I feel like Finland deserved the win and many of these ref calls were justified. Many dirty plays by Canada weren't called. There are rules in hockey. It's not the wild wild west. I don't think that refs wanted to call so many penalties on Canada, but they had to if all that Canadians were doing was breaking the rules. I'm glad that Heiskanen didn't die today. That wasn't even a penalty according to the refs.

3on3 every time really is a sucky way to end a WHC final. We need a change for this rule. Finland got it's share of that BS in 2021 when Finland was the better team 5on5 and I feel like Canadians got a cheap win because it was indeed a 3on3 ending. I'm glad that Finland was able to tie the 3on3 score now, but I'm really hoping that they would make this first 20 min OT to be 4on4 or 5on5 and only after that they should do a 3on3 second OT period, if they really must do that. We would get 90% of the times a winner inside the 4on4/5on5 OT.

I dont think you can look at this objectively unfortunatley. Quite clearly a dive. If you watch the replay.

When has Finland ever won a best on best?

Thanks for the tournament all the posters. I've had enough of this ref talk so see you at the WJC's. I may post something on the team Finland thread but thats it.

Thanks for all the Finns here, we really were super active on GDT's just amazing to see how many of us are here.

Lets enjoy the gold now. Torilla tavataan! Even though I think I'm going to bed if I'm being honest lmao.

Never, but we have been on medals almost every best on best tournament. Canada could use players only from greater Toronto area (same population roughly) and see what's the outcome.

With the amount of active hockey players and culture + resources, every tournament Canada doesn't win is a massive disappointment.

So how are they comparable to Canada?

Did i compare them to Canada? It's quite obvious that no country can compete with Canada just due to the sheer amount of players.

Per capita Sweden and Finland are clear number 1 and 2.

Yeah Canada didnt even get to pick all the best players on the team..... Still won.

What a match! What a result for us Finns!!! I feel honestly quite emotional, as this was really the dream come true to the little 7-8 year old boy that I was about 41-42 years ago. I was sometimes in tears after Finland lost 7-0, 8-1 or 9-1 against the Soviet Union, or sometimes Canada. Sometimes rarely we managed to upset Sweden or Czechoslovakia with a tight one goal margin win, just to get beaten by West Germany or Poland, or another country that was supposed to be weaker than Finland. And we were always out from the medals as the final ranking position was something between 4th and 6th positions. And this happened really always even many years later.

But the little kid that I was then, never stopped dreaming. Even when crying after the 9-1 loss against Canada the dream was alive in the back of my head: One day I want to see Finland win the WHC-tournament and to be there to see it happen live. I always thought it was a very utopistic dream, but I kept dreaming.

Well the dream of winning a medal first and then pretty soon even gold, got realized already quite a while ago. But today was the day when the little boy’s true dream got fulfilled by being at the stands in the final to see Finland win gold. And what a game it was!!! The best hockey experience I have ever had! Thank you Canada for giving us all a great game with your effort and skill and of course thank you so much for Jukka and the boys! You are the best guys!! Literally! 🏒🇫🇮🦁❤️
