Waiving a guy just over 20 games into a season you committed 4mil to

Gotta be fired for that.

Oh also there's a 6mil goalie playing in the AHL if anyone forgot

I'm starting to think he's either completely checked out or isn't as cheap as people think he is.

I'd be furious as an owner if I was paying 8.25M to two AHLers.

Hopefully a sale is in progress and he's checked out. Otherwise... yeah.

It's one thing to be last place in the league. But to be last place in the league WHILE throwing away millions? Rough.

How much would a young, modern-thinking GM cost? Surely not as much as is being wasted on AHL players here. Would a Bill Zito or Bill Armstrong type be willing to come here? Like assistant GM or director of scouting looking for their chance to become GM.

MDZ on waivers. Just another proof that our GM is a mastermind

156-196-39 so far by my count.

Obviously they're rebuilding very slowly, but so far the only success he's had is one season with the team he took over from Bryan Murray.

If this doesn't turn the corner, he'll go down as arguably the worst GM of all time, definitely the worst in Ottawa. If it does turn the corner, he'll get his day and surely brag about it in a press conference.

He's lucky Murray turned this team's drafting around in 2008, so Dorion had some pretty good players when he took over and was able to reach the ECF in 2017, even though he had already started "sabotaging" the future (Zibanejad and Dahlen traded early) then the Duchene trade early in 2017-18

If this turns around after 5-6 years of pure rebuilding (and a collection of lottery picks) and INHERITING an indecent amount of talent in its prime compared to usual rebuilding teams, I hope they don't f***ing brag about it. The BARE MINIMUM we should expect is at least 5 years of true contention. Anything less would be pure failure. I mean, GMs don't usually have nearly this luxury when rebuilding (and we're not even talking about having young studs like Chabot and Batherson already on board)

It’d be pretty funny if Melnyk turfed Dorion before the “what? everything is fine here” crowd had even turned on him.

How isn’t Melnyk pissed?

I'm guessing Melnyk is the one making these moves. Murray getting waived when Forsberg hasn't clearly been better? MDZ getting waived when Mete and Heatherington clearly haven't been better? IMO, Melnyk is having a temper tantrum and forcing these moves.

It's not personal so much as preference. DJ just loves big physical defensive D.

He's played Coburn, Gudbranson and Brown over objectively better D because they were smaller and less physical.

Which is why MDZ was such a weird signing. Fit just wasn't there.
Is heatherington physical?

I don't think it would be justified, because I agree with what you've said here, but I expect it if it ever turns out. I'm sure both him and Melnyk have been hoping they get the last laugh after all the backlash.

Legit starting to think that a sale is going through and Melnyk could care less who’s getting waived or not.

man it has to be. Melnyk is not rich enough to own a pro sports franchise and the city hates him so that no one will go to his games.

This is a death trap for Melnyk. He has to be looking to sell.

I won't speculate about the ownership structure situation, but as I have been saying since their California road trip, I think Pierre Dorion is a lame duck GM. He is getting canned by the season's end.

It happens. Travis Green was fired a few months into his new contract and there are probably plenty of other examples. Its very rare for HC or high ranking executives in sports to go into their last year of contract without an extension.

Owner has to be willing to take the hit tho so i’d say he’s pretty safe all things considered.
