It happens. Travis Green was fired a few months into his new contract and there are probably plenty of other examples. Its very rare for HC or high ranking executives in sports to go into their last year of contract without an extension.

Owner has to be willing to take the hit tho so i’d say he’s pretty safe all things considered.

But Dorion and DJ aren't even a few months into their new contracts. Their new contracts start next season.

Fine.

Why did he get an extension then

Based on the performances of a young team that ended up the season with a winning stretch to end a COVID reduced schedule in a pathetic Canadian division. An extension of a pathetic GM by an even pathetic owner. Every decision goes through Melnyk anyway, but he cannot be happy signing cheques for Murray and Uncle Michael in the minors. Definitely not thrilled with the results either I suppose. In any case, Melnyk hired Pierre McGuire to "help" Dorion. Even if all these recent ownership talks are just BS, I think there's a ready-made man in McGuire all ready to assume duties for the latest fall-guy (who has deserved to be canned for a while).

Coaching/GM contracts don't mean shit. They aren't CBA agreements. You keep running back to this and it's such a pathetic argument lol. Acting like Dorion's contract will protect him. Surely no other GM has ever been fired with term left on his non-CBA deal.

I mean, it matters to Melnyk.

This is the kind of off-season and ensuing results that gets a GM fired, regardless of contract structure. Yes, even Melnyk has limits lol.

No it doesn’t.He’s tried to bury much more $ than Pierre Dorion’s piddly shit contract

Honestly I think it may.

Melnyk is so stupid he can't understand that cost cutting on management and scouting to save a couple million a year actually results in more money lost because their incompetence leads to the wasting of far more dollars on terrible players that don't help the team win games.

You’re giving Melnyk way too much credit

It’s funny that Logan Browns issue here seemed to be lack of effort, and they traded him for the most lackadaisical player on the team lol

They traded him for an older, less talented, more expensive player, who plays the position we need the least, and threw in a pick.

I don't know if there's a trade that more perfectly encapsulates the incompetence of Dorion.

Proudest Day

Not hard to think pretty much anyone could do better.
What a shame to have this guy running the show here.
Extremely discouraging.

Could they?

Pierre has always been destined to fail. Rule of thumb when you hire a new GM is that you also have an experienced President above them. Apparently they realized this at some point but obviously no one wants to work for Melnyk. Pierre’s assistant GM was hired more for contract help than hockey knowledge from my understanding, and he has the most bare bones front office in the NHL. I suspect there are many GMs around the league that would struggle mightily in Ottawa.

I’m not defending Pierre, because I do think he’s objectively been bad. There’s really little harm in trying someone new at this point, outside of how it hurts Melnyk’s wallet. But I really don’t know that I expect better results - we will get another GM with an unproven track record, another first time NHL head coach and a front office that is overwhelmed. When the guy who runs your social media quits because of the workload, imagine how exhausted everyone in hockey operations is at this point - like all five of them. It’s a product that is doomed to fail until Melnyk is gone and someone invests in this team.

We need to fire this guy and hire someone credible. We want to attract people or trade for them and have them want to stay. Get someone credible. This guy is a joke.

YES. And I am not getting into hypothetical , philosophical discussions on the conditions poor fn Pierre Dorion has to work in. He is lucky to have the job he has and he is not qualified to have it. His performance speaks for itself. You want to look for reasons why he is not doing so well go for it. I think the biggest reason is he is not capable. Everything else pales to that.

Didn’t say anything about “poor Pierre” but okay.

He’s being saved by Trent Mann and one SJ historically bad season for their franchise in 20 years.

So under Dorion’s brilliant maneuvering, we are now paying 4 players not to play for the ottawa senators (2x buried in AHL with Murray and potentially MDZ, 2x buyout for Ryan and Phanuef).

any other place this scrub would have been canned. And I think that’s the most disappointing thing in all of this. All through MelnyI’d foibles, this guy at the core still wanted to win and wouldn’t hesitate to can a coach. And now here we are with neither of DJ Smith or Dorion worrying about their roles

It is cheaper to fire GM and coach then let Dorion continue to make mistakes.

Other than Murray it does not matter the team tried to tank they wanted to draft high. They have had 3 drafts since they decided to rebuild and the first draft Colorado had the pick.
Anyone who thinks a team should be good while trying to tank is mistaken. Random contracts to fill out the roster during the sucky times are not anything to worry about.
“Why are we not loaded with good players while we are trying to finish last?”
Is it really that hard to figure out
