I don't think it would be justified, because I agree with what you've said here, but I expect it if it ever turns out. I'm sure both him and Melnyk have been hoping they get the last laugh after all the backlash.
If it would have been a quick turnaround/rebuild sort of like the Ducks are doing right now, it would have been remarkable but now it's getting kinda embarassing. I mean look at it this way.
When the season went to hell in 2017-18, this is what we had (not listing all prospects) :
Thomas Chabot (21)
Drake Batherson (19)
Alex Formenton (18)
Colin White (21)
Logan Brown (19)
Nick Paul (22)
Chris Driedger (23)
Christian Wolanin (22)
Maxime Lajoie (20)
Then we had these guys that we could decide to trade (only listing the most valuable) :
Cody Ceci (24)
Jean-Gabriel Pageau (25)
Ryan Dzingel (25)
Mark Stone (25)
Matt Duchene (27)
Erik Karlsson (27)
Mike Hoffman (28)
Derick Brassard (30)
And we started drafting high that year (2018 draft). This below is what we could have right now
IF Dorion stopped doing anything after the 2020 draft (but priorly extended DeMelo and Namestnikov instead of trading them for a 3rd + 4th)
Ottawa Senators Trade History - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps
Tkachuk - Norris - Batherson (we know what these guys can do)
Stutzle - L. Brown - Duclair (crazy amount of skill and speed on the wings)
Paul - White - C. Brown (3rd line but get more TOI at EV/PK)
Formenton - Namestnikov - Balcers (too good for the 4th but since there is always injuries)
Kelly
Chabot - Zub (beautiful pairing to watch)
Brannstrom - DeMelo (DeMelo would help Brannstrom settle down)
Wolanin - Zaitsev (not a great pairing, would have to shelter them)
Lajoie
Driedger
Gustavsson
In development/incoming :
Jake Sanderson, Shane Pinto, Jacob Bernard-Docker, Mads Sogaard, Ridly Greig, Lassi Thomson, Egor Sokolov, Roby Jarventie, Angus Crookshank, Tyler Kleven, Vitali Abramov, Maxence Guénette, Leevi Merilainen, Philippe Daoust + 2021 draft!
The defense is not great by any means but probably better than the current one. Some major help would be on the way (like now) with Sanderson, Thomson and JBD. I definitely would take that forward group over the one we have right now. Goaltending harder to assess because Driedger was let go in 2018 before he "broke out" so we might have still needed a stop gap goalie to not leave Gustavsson with the whole burden
Dorion really didn't need to do much, maybe try to get 2 solid stop gap vets (1 forward, 1 D-man)
So what the hell happened since that 2020 draft? Things were looking very good but Dorion has massively screwed it up ever since.
