Fair analysis really, Cory probably doesn't know our farm system enough to know the 'stopgap' was by design with all the younger goalies though.
He sounded like he really didn't like the move and was being more diplomatic to me?

Big guys breakdown, short term solution, right back in the same position two years from now....that sounds like corporate speak for holy shit this was a desperate move.

The plan always seemed to be to go get a top 4 LD, which is the right call.

That was going to push Bahl out of the lineup so he was expendable.
Was definitely this boards plan. Was Fitz on record saying the same?

I think it could have been Bahl or Sieg's. I wonder if Fitz or Calgary had a preference.

This goalie's career already peaked, why on earth would you give up your 10th pick for a 34 year old goalie? Isn't this goalie hitting free agency after this season? I could care less about giving up Bahl, but kind of feel Fitzpatrick through that asset out to save his job.

Really stupid trade, sorry. This team is nowhere close to competing with Panthers or Oilers right now. We could have used that pick for a strong younger player. Our GM is looking like a dumb rookie.
He's got 2 years left on his deal.

2 years from now, Daws Schmid and Poulter will all be viewed significantly different then they are now. Granted they could be viewed as guys incapable of playing in the NHL. But the hope, a not unrealistic one, is one of those guys will be ready.

Lebrun hear mentioned Devils are interested in Dillon:

There was also this report below:

I take the second report to mean:

Top six forward (Arvidsson, Henrique, etc. type)
Bottom six forward (Carrier, Trevon, Stenlund, etc.)
Top four defender (Dillon, DeMelo, McNabb?)
Bottom four defender (Smith, Cole, Kulikov)

If we add two more defenders like Fitz is planning, there’s no room for Bahl.

The best part was " his numbers fell off at the end of the year after they traded their defense"...

Lol wait until he sees the defense here

Anyone know what happens to the 2025 1st in the event it's a top 10 pick?

edit: meaning What do the Devils then send the Flames as compensation?

I really don't care about next year's 1st, nor do I care about the 10OA, or Bahl. Honestly, if someone came along and said we would be guaranteed to win 3 cups in the next 8 years if we had to trade any or all of our stars tomorrow to do so, I wouldn't love it but I'd do it.

Not sure what kind of argument this is...yea we're so guaranteed to win cups.

There is not a very real chance that this pick ends up in the 11 to 15 range. Even for a doomcaster like you, this is a ridiculous thing to say.

Why? People were saying the exact same thing last year. We were one of the favorites to win the Cup last year lol.

If we were to acquire Dillon(which seems like a great fit), we'd need a 7th d-man, not a bottom 4(or bottom pair) d-man. Is the Smith above, Brendan? I'd actually be OK with that. Doubt the board would.

I wouldn't actually play him much, I'd look to bring up Hataaka or Casey in case of injury, but I think Smith would be fine as a guy who plays 6 or 7 games in a year.

Unfortunately there is.

It better not happen, but there is a real chance it does.

It was a desperate move. Not sure if anyone would say different.

The point is that everyone recognized the Devils were in a desperate place. Fitz knew he was dealing from weakness but didn't let that stop him. He still got the best deal he could.

The obvious desperation is one of the reasons many observers were thinking the Devils would have to trade #10OA. Ottawa is looking for a goalie. Detroit would like a goalie. Toronto wants a goalie. Maybe Colorado too. Fitz moved early - maybe he paid a bit too much, but he made sure he filled the need and certainly didn't wildly overpay.

Overall, I agree with Cory's assessment. The move has risks. But, it had to be done, and Fitz deserves credit for bringing the deal home.

(That said, I think everyone is under-rating Bahl's upside. He's 6'6". Thompson didn't start to break out until his age 24 season. Chara didn't have 20+ points until his age 24 season. Big guys can take a while. Not saying Bahl is going to be a superstar, just that he's not a finished product yet.)

Who Markstrom? I thought part of the issue was Calgary was jerking him around and he lost his edge mentally.

But bring in a guy like Dillon and I think our D is going to look pretty good next year. Not only healthier, but more mature, and a more basic system less prone to breakdowns.

If you think Calgary’s defense was significantly better than ours last year you’re just being willfully ignorant. In the most basic stats, they had similar shots against per game and we only allowed 4 more 5v5 goals against with objectively much worse goaltending.

We are again. So yes, if everything possible goes wrong again, we’ll stink. So will everyone else. Ridiculous to go around worrying about that possibility though.
