Very nice deal for MTL, but I don't think many teams were touching him. Solid depth scorer with an inflated shooting percentage. Underlying numbers were not great. Not big but is fairly strong and works hard in the tight areas.

He doesn't really fit with the Leafs unless we traded Kerfoot and wanted a bottom 6 scorer... And there are plenty of solid alternatives if we wanted to go that route.

EDIT: It is looking like it is 2 x 2.1, not 1.1. Still a solid deal, but obviously less of a steal.

MTL desperately needed a guy to play top 4 LD.

He is staying there.

You'd need to move Kerfoot and cheap out on his replacement, or move out Muzzin but you also likely need to trade Sandin to get Marino so you are suddenly shallow on LD. Effectively Brodie would need to move to LD, and he is much better at RD.

I considered Marino yesterday. How to fit him in and make it work. It is effectively Kerfoot, Sandin, and Holl out, and then you have a contract that may be a little bit heavy for when we need to sign more important players. Right now, Jarnkrok and Rielly are the only ones with contracts when Matthews and Nylander are due.

I think the Leafs are better off just giving Liljegren some runway. Would not be surprised if he can be as good as Marino next year if given the chance.

Have we already used our remainder allowance for the 10% overage during off-season?

No, but we would need to clear it before the start of the season and going over just puts us at a major disadvantage in trades.

We already need to clear out Kerfoot to afford the other guys in our lineup.

There are not really any LD worth signing.

Even in a tank year, they still need guys who can play. He is a local kid who is not that good of a top 4 LD, but can still chew up big minutes and be a safety valve for some of their younger guys (which is also important).

I doubt anyone wants Matheson anyways. He had a decent year, but he was a negative value player a year ago and has an inflated contract.

I thought there was some buzz etc with CBJ series, had some chances, and it was just weird to have a big portion of the season cancelled and then come in cold.

MTL - He looked like he wasn't a threat too often and Hyman didn't help either.

Tampa - he was buzzing, creating chances, went over a pt/game, contributed on both special teams etc. If he gives me that production consistently every series, you're doing okay.

I was more disappointed in our depth, specifically anyone not named Kampf lol.

For any 10 plus mil players, they need to be more than just pt/game in playoffs. They need to dominate shift in and shift out. What’s the point of paying them top 10 salaries in the league if they are just okay.

Matthews/Marner line was pretty dominant throughout the Tampa series, some games you come out on the worse end of the match up but the reality is you're facing other elite players.

Do you expect them to get the better of Tampa's top guys 7/7 games? Not happening. I thought they were actually better most games, even sometimes the points weren't there.

I again standby the fact that the bottom 6 largely let down Toronto.

Higher draft and was played on his off side. I can also see him just wanting out because he doesn't want to sit in the press box next year

I don’t think depth was the issue considering that’s been Leafs depth all season, you can’t expect them to suddenly go Super Nova bc of playoffs. Blaming depth is really a lazy way to let the top guys off the hook unless they played like McD and Drai. Afterall, I think just Marner alone makes more money than the combine bottom 6 with change.

Were they dominated? Bc beside Game 1, they really didn’t get the results despite Vas not at his best.
They were bad against BJs barring the miracle 6mins in Game 4. Horrible against the Habs. When compare to those two series, they played great but compare to their regular season, they were okay. And if you compare to other elite players in the playoffs, they were just okay.
