Seems like with everything else they've done, that last top 4 D piece would put the icing on the "going for it" good news wave they've ridden and really solidify expectations and roles. There will be a lot to iron out, but bring in Chychrun and expectations go from hoping for playoffs to expecting them imo.

Dorion is probably hoping Jarventie and/or Kleven really have a good WJC in August. I think he really doesn't want to part with Greig or Pinto.

the sens first 10 games are against:
1. Sabres
2. Leafs
3. Bruins
4. Capitals
5. Coyotes
6. Stars
7. Wild
8. Panthers
9. Lightning
10. Knights

Sens need to go 6-4 minimum to show that they at are trending in the right direction and DJ Smith not getting canned. If Sens go 8-1-1 then I legit feel they will make the playoffs.

The next 10 games are much easier, and I definitely expect them to have a record of at least 13-5-2 to show that they're legit and have a chance at the playoffs.

When your turnover this much of the roster and everyone is learning a new system new linemates etc it's going to take some time. Expecting a hot start is setting unrealistic expectations. The team needs to develop an identity. Giroux said it in the presser. DJ's job should not be on the line unless there is a disastrous start like the last 2 years. They're going to get hot in the second half. If they make it in they're going to be a handful because they're going to be rolling. The east is tough. They still have a young team.
I wonder if Chyc's instagram activity could mean he almost expects to get traded here
He lives in the Ottawa area in the offseason doesn't he?

Didn't know that. Kinda odd as he's from Florida. Guess his dad is Canadian
Also thanks to eliteprospects I learned that Luke Richardson is his uncle

If there were any indications of that I might buy it, but the only rumour we've heard about Marino came from Garrioch (so basically directly from the organization) and it was regarding his term being a problem.
Yep. That's the only rumour.

But what are the options? PD comes out and makes some type of statement throwing Marino under the bus due to intel from Bowness's Pittsburgh days? That's not happening is it?

I'm raising the possibility that they just weren't that interested in the player period and contract duration is just a nice polite public story.

We've got 2 RDs in Belleville knocking on the door. Not only would we have an opinion on their readiness, Bowness would also. We are 5 RD deep including Thomson and JBD. PP time is chewed up by LDs. We only need about 55 minutes a night of RD. Many nights less than that. Sure having a 24 minute a night RD guy would be great but there's a big price to pay for that. If Zub is going to play 22 a night, there's not much time left.

People want rid of Zaitsev. He and Holden played by far the most PK time. The PK was the ONLY stat in the league where we were in the top half of the league. It ain't broke so it don't need to be fixed.

Moving a Brannstrom plus a prospect for something that might be a minor upgrade on the right side weakens the left side.

I'm good with the D we have going in to the season. We kicked the tires. Price was too high. There's another year of thread left on the tires we have

Right…which was in response to me saying Jersey offered something we likely would not be willing to beat.

We would not be willing to part with a prospect better than that ty smith for Marino. I disagree with the point. But given the point…we still weren’t beating it

Wow so chychrun is dying to be a sen. crazy
Hard to say if the Sens took a serious run at Marino at all.

If the only way we can get Chychrun is to include either Pinto or Grieg in the deal I'd still do it. Naturally I'd rather keep them both but I believe that Chychrun will be more impactful than either of those guys.

Yeah, Chychrun is the kind of acquisition where you have to part with something that hurts. And I'm not sure I want that kind of pain; love those 2 guys and see them as very important forwards in the near future.

The DeBrincat deal was so nice. Didn't even lose a middling prospect.

No way I deal Pinto. That could really hurt us. Grieg I’m not sure, I haven’t watched him play as much.

Honestly, I think it's pretty reasonable to think the team was not as high on Marino as fans were. JBD and Thomson might be there pretty soon, JBD had a more impressive college career and is the same age going into this season as Marino was during his rookie year, he just finished his first year pro and had a very strong finish in the AHL despite little fanfare. Thomson is a few months younger and adds a bit more offensive flair if that's what we want. He looked a bit more dynamic in his callup and had a solid AHL season too. We got to be a bit more patient with our D prospects, Marino hadn't played a single pro game by the same age as JBD or Thomson, but were writing off JBD for some reason and lamenting not picking up Marino.

I agree with you that we are fine going into the season with what we have, it's not ideal imo but I think we can get by with what we have. I'd love to add Chychrun, but if the price is Greig or Pinto I'll pass.

I think Bowness literally told PD not to bother.

The garrioch statement about Marino's term scaring us off at the end of the day is nonsense. That just means we were never interested in him to begin with, despite any rumblings on twitter. It's not like PD all of a sudden decided to check capfriendly to see how long he was signed for.

You know what they say

If you start listening to the fans, you'll soon be sitting with them

I already do... does the reverse work too?
You know, without any additional acquisitions, I think the offseason has far exceeded expectations

Players being brought in

Locking up some players

It's all good. I'm not sure any team has had a better off season

Ottawa has three D on their roster that IMO have a long future here in Chabot, Sanderson & Zub if he stays & signs here, the rest of the D are all likely gone at some point. I think Formenton (scandal), Thomson, Brannstrom, Jarventie, Sokolov, Ostapchuk could all be part of some package in any deal for a top 4 D along with picks for Chychrun. Boucher & Kastelic are both from Arz (Scotsdale/Phoenix) should the Yotes want some home grown talent.

Their biggest problem is going to be who they think will want to stay here long term & who might not & if they can figure this out they could package these guys. The other problem will be trying to include Zaitsev in the deal or finding someone to take him with a sweetner. I would hate to lose Pinto, but that shoulder injury was quite severe & who knows if he ever gets 100 % healthy due to it or it becomes a nagging re-injury. They have the assets to make a deal & I'm quite sure whatever they do half will like it & half will hate it. :fence:

This has been one of our best offseasons I can remember. I guess the Yashin trade might have been more satisfying because of the overall desire to move on from him but from a purely on ice perspective we did a lot of good this offseason and I can't think of a year that matches up.

The difference between last years opening night roster and this years is going to be huge.

Out: C.Brown, N.Paul, White, Tierney, Ennis, Sanford, J.Brown, MDZ, Mete, Murray, Gustavsson

IN: DeBrincat, Giroux, Joseph, Sanderson, Hamonic, Talbot

Then there are guys that were on the roster but not fully integrated like Brannstrom, and Pinto who should be regulars, and guys like JBD, Thomson, Kelly, Kastelic Crookshank and Sokolov that should be ready to fill out the bottom half of the roster instead of guys like Shaw

Paul and C.Brown are good players and will be missed, but we shouldn't have any issues filling the void with the guys we've added.
