Players are only worth what someone is willing to pay.
Easy to say nobody is willing to pay the price when in reality, we don't know what teams are willing to pay, or what we're willing to accept.

But if we're comparing Ty Smith's two seasons to Brannstrom's last two seasons, how far off are they really? I don't really think Smith has that big a lead here, people are just more down on Brannstrom because he's been around the NHL longer despite only being 4 months older.

Doesn’t matter how far off we think they they are , all that matters is what the other GM wants or how he values the 2 defenders.

Brannstrom is much closer to Smith in value than Greig or Pinto.

Smith was legitimately one of the worst D in hockey last year, after a decent rookie year.

Still young and can turn it around but he's a reclamation project.
He has hype from not that long ago lol he’s far from a reclamation project.

Regardless I’m sure we offfered brannstrom lol.

I wasn't sold on Klingberg....Chychrun on the other hand would be a good fit. Sens running out of options...maybe Zaitsev comes in this season and gets 50pts? Lol who knows
I think we all know the answer to that last statement

Well that’s exactly it? If brannstrom was in Sweden the past 4 years just dominating his value would be higher than it is right now.

Brannstroms value is low or else we certainly would have traded him for help by now given how DJ seems to view him

In an environment where a top 6 forward Bjorkstrand gets dumped for a 3rd+4th because he makes an entirely reasonable 5.4M, I think it's far more likely that Marino just didn't have the value we thought he would rather than Smith being valued highly by Hextall for some reason.

If we were willing to trade a 2nd + Brannstrom, that may been the better offer, but from the sounds of it Dorion didn't want to trade for Marino because he has 5 years left on his deal and he's concerned about how much money we'll have available after years 2-3.

I don't think we got outbid so much as we didn't have as much interest.

Which we don't know. We only know that the Sens value him more than what anyone was willing to offer.

We don't actually know this. We just know that we haven't been offered anything that exceeds his value to us.

I mean, DJ played him close to 20 mins a night, and used him on the PK. Maybe how DJ views him and how you perceive DJ views him aren't as close as you think.

I think he's expendable, since we have Chabot and Sanderson. But I also think Dorion thought pretty highly of him when we acquired him, and may still feel that way. What Dorion's willing to accept might be higher than what fans here would.

Same reason we got DeBrincat for cheap and dealt Brown for cheap - flat cap and a major buyer's market.
As @Golden_Jet pointed out below, Chicago is in tear down mode

Why is a team that's trying to compete moving out a 25 year old RD on a good contract? That's something you typically don't do. Without understanding what is underneath that decision you can't call it a miss

To clear cap space for Petry and Rutta.

How exactly do you think DJ view him? Without looking it up, he probably had the highest toi on the team in half of his last 15 to 20 games.

It was set in June, and then PD went back to board to get a second raise to budget to get DeBrincat.
As reported by Mendes.

Edit: my bad, second budget request was for Giroux as mentioned by Mendes.
Leblanc might have talked about it as well.
Going to have a hard time fitting any one >4M long term under the salary cap, not even budget, in 2 years even without Zaitsevs money if we are resigning Zub, Stutzle and DeBrincat to 3-5M raises eazch.

You know what else is probably just as likely?

There might be someone in the Sens org with an inside understanding of why Pittsburgh wanted to move on.

If there were any indications of that I might buy it, but the only rumour we've heard about Marino came from Garrioch (so basically directly from the organization) and it was regarding his term being a problem.

I think people need to realize that DJ coaches according to the roster to maximize wins. With better players now in the mix, I’d expect Branny to be allowed to have more freedom because the players surrounding him are better.
This is my hope anyway.

Justin Holl is >>>>>>> Hamonic and Zaitsev.

He looks fine to the eye and analytically he checks out as essentially an average/above-average defensively minded number 4 defenseman. I think he'd be a nice fit as a partner for Sanderson. If the Leafs have to give him away then it's definitely the move to make.

I think the Sens are stuck with Zaitsev. Just have to live with him as the 7th.
I'd go for Justin Holl as as stop gap. Living with him as a 7th is one thing. Will he get played like a 7th is another.

I think JC needs to go to his agent and tell him he wants to play in Ottawa next season and request a trade from the Yotes or he is sitting out next season....... ha,ha
Imagine the next CBA fight lol.
