Justin Holl is >>>>>>> Hamonic and Zaitsev.

He looks fine to the eye and analytically he checks out as essentially an average/above-average defensively minded number 4 defenseman. I think he'd be a nice fit as a partner for Sanderson. If the Leafs have to give him away then it's definitely the move to make.

I think the Sens are stuck with Zaitsev. Just have to live with him as the 7th.

The more the HC thing drags on, the more I wonder if PD is effectively frozen from making moves until he knows what the outcome of the investigations will be.

The only way I can see that effecting it is if Formenton is a key piece in a trade for a d-man and the other team wants clarity on the situation. Otherwise, I'm not really sure. I'd like to think the plan was always to add a d-man with this forward group already set in stone.

Well, maybe Klingberg values lifestyle and weather over competitiveness. Isn't California more tax friendly than Ontario for millionaires as well?

I honsetly think the best time to get a RHD would be next offseason, lots of free agents, one year makes Zaitsev much easier to move as well. If one of Thomson or Docker improves this year, we'd still be much better anyways.

I find it hard to believe a guy taking a one-year deal would favor climate and tax benefit over playing on a competitive team. Klingberg needs to prove he's able to provide top-4 level defense if he wants to get paid long term and I'm not sure he'll be able to do this with Anaheim this season. My guess is we didn't pursue him very much.

Justin Holl was terrible last year. You need to see an optometrist

With all the UFA d-men gone and our need to move Zaitsev, I don't see this happening without giving up an unprotected 1st and/or Pinto/Greig.

Dorion really should have just paid the price for Marino and moved on. He kind of overplayed his hand. The extra year or two on his contract weren't a big deal.
Kinda depends on how deep conversations are with Chychrun

It was clear Debrincat was our number one target after the fact, and we saw Fiala go for a deal we could have matched.

If Chyhchrun is the guy and the team feels they are close it’ll all make sense

California is the NY of the west coast. Heavily taxed (I think may be highest in the country actually). Ya'll are thinking of Florida.

Personally would have like a shot at Klingberg for 7M x 1 year as a stop-gap. Would have cost 0 assets.

2 seasons ago. And upped it to 14 points in 53 last year, with no goals.

And Smith had 20 points in 66 games, pretty similar again.

We're talking about two small offensive D that don't skate or defend well enough to make an impact.

Neither have a lot of value. If Brannstrom is worth a 3rd, Smith is worth a 2nd at the most.

Will be interesting to see what Miles Wood signs for after he signed a 2.5M x 4 year long bridge subsequent to 17 and 32 point seasons on his ELC with 19 goals as a tenacious speedster. Basically identical to Formenton's situation for the bridge (18 and 32 points when prorated for games played), and Joseph's 2nd contract (Joseph's 19 pts to Wood's 25 points but with 1 less RFA year).

Anticipate Wood will sign around 3M x 1-2 years based on his injury.

Set's the floor for Formenton if he signs as long as 4 years to 2.5M x 4 years. With the ceiling also being 2.5M for short bridge. I see 2.0M x 2 years. 1.8M x 1 year.

Maybe a prospect or two ups their value over the next few weeks at the WJC. I'm assuming the goal right now is trying to get Chychrun without giving up either Pinto or Greig, along with Zaitsev going the other way. It'll be tough.

If we don't find a d-man, this is probably what I'd go with:

Chabot-Zub
Sanderson-Holden

All you can do is hope Sanderson has a Hesikanen/Seider-like rookie season. Thomson could take the next step, but starting off with a Sanderson-Thomson pairing is risky.

I think Hamonic replaces Holden at RD with Sanderson at LD.

Holden - Brannstrom for 3rd pair with Zaitsev as #7 if not given away with a 2nd round pick to give JBD or Thomson a roster spot.

Unless Zaitsev goes likely not getting Chychurun, we already got the board to up budget twice, probably not happening a third time.
Arizona wants the moon for him, or he would of been moved 1 1/2 years ago when the rumours started.

So for Brannstrom it's this year that counts, but for Ty Smith, his rookie year is the one to look to, gotcha, that makes perfect sense.

Grass is always greener I guess.

Seem to have run out of options, I'm gonna set expectations that we don't have a sexy top 4 dman before the season

Budget was set back in June. Dorion has room to add the top 4 D. I think he is doing what everyone says they want, don’t make a move in a panic, let the price drop to a place he is prepared to play.

Players are only worth what someone is willing to pay.

It was set in June, and then PD went back to board to get a second raise to budget to get DeBrincat.
As reported by Mendes.

Edit: my bad, second budget request was for Giroux as mentioned by Mendes.
Leblanc might have talked about it as well.
