Chychrun or bust now
With all the UFA d-men gone and our need to move Zaitsev, I don't see this happening without giving up an unprotected 1st and/or Pinto/Greig.

Dorion really should have just paid the price for Marino and moved on. He kind of overplayed his hand. The extra year or two on his contract weren't a big deal.

It isn't?

Do you spend spring break in the arctic because its only 1 week?

Klingberg's biggest concern is getting a big long-term contract. Was asking for 40M+ at the start of free agency.

He is probably only going to be in Anaheim until the trade deadline. He'd be a fool to pass up a better opportunity to pad his stats and look impressive to pro scouts just because the weather is nice in Orange County.

Marino was the big miss this off-season.

25 year old 2nd pairing defensive RD available for cheap, and we pass him up because he happens to be signed long-term at a reasonable average salary because things MIGHT get tight in a couple years IF DeBrincat re-signs.

Well, maybe Klingberg values lifestyle and weather over competitiveness. Isn't California more tax friendly than Ontario for millionaires as well?

I honsetly think the best time to get a RHD would be next offseason, lots of free agents, one year makes Zaitsev much easier to move as well. If one of Thomson or Docker improves this year, we'd still be much better anyways.
California is the highest state tax in the league. Taxes probably weren't a big consideration.

I suspect he saw an opportunity to be the clear cut best offensive Dman there so that he can use it to springboard into his next contract. A similar opportunity existed here, but he might be worried about competing with Chabot for offensive mins. I wouldn't be surprised if they out bid us too, 7 mil is probably more than we'd like to be spending,

The appeal to Klingberg was that he cost no trade assets, but he really was a short term solution, kicking the can down the road. I'd rather give up a bit of assets to get a longer term solution like Chychrun or prior to the trade Marino.

Calgary might be willing to move a Dman after acquiring Weegar, Tanev would look real good though he doesn't really meet that longer term check box.

You ever wonder why a 25 year old RD signed to a modest contract is available cheap?

I didn't like the idea of Klingberg either. -55 or something over the past few years. No thanks. We don't need that with Chabot and we certainly don't need that helping Sanderson break in?

If we don't find a d-man, this is probably what I'd go with:

Chabot-Zub
Sanderson-Holden

All you can do is hope Sanderson has a Hesikanen/Seider-like rookie season. Thomson could take the next step, but starting off with a Sanderson-Thomson pairing is risky.

Same reason we got DeBrincat for cheap and dealt Brown for cheap - flat cap and a major buyer's market.
DeBrinicat was cheap because Chicago is tearing their team down. Chicago isn’t worried about the cap.

Not a popular take around here, but Holl wouldn't be a bad option. He has a 10-team NTC though.
Ya it’s not a popular take because he’s not good. We have enough third pairs.

We owe Zaitsev almost the same for two years in actual dollars as Klingberg for one.

Plus we would have had to give up assets to move Zaitsev.

I wanted Klingberg too, but between dollars, role, assets, etc.. it might have been wise to pass if we would have needed to go above 7M.

Just give RFA minimal contracts for the next year or two while we unload dead cap like Zaitsev/Murray/Bobby/Phaneuf/MDZ, then give them medium 5-6 year EK contracts after.

Formenton 1M X 1 y
Brannstrom 1.5M X 1 y
Pinto 2M X 1 y
Stutzle 5M X 1 y
I don't see Formenton & Stutzle being motivated to sign contracts at those low salaries. Brannstrom and Pinto maybe.

New Jersey paid a price I don’t think we could have paid anyway. Or wanted to pay. Greig or pinto are the only comparable prospects we have at the moment to Smith.

Brannstrom is much closer to Smith in value than Greig or Pinto.

Smith was legitimately one of the worst D in hockey last year, after a decent rookie year.

Still young and can turn it around but he's a reclamation project.

I would expect Hamonic to be paired with Chabot and Zub with Sanderson and then perhaps Branny/Holden with Z in and out whenever.

That explains why he was available, not why he was cheap. Market sets the price, the selling team just decides whether it makes sense to them to accept it.

I wasn't sold on Klingberg....Chychrun on the other hand would be a good fit. Sens running out of options...maybe Zaitsev comes in this season and gets 50pts? Lol who knows
