Seth Jones at 6.5 for 8 years would be an absolute steal in a few years
Seth Jones will be 28 in October 2022. 8 Years brings him to age 36 in his final year. At 6'4 and 209 he would be a formidable presence on the D. $43M / 8 years = $5.375 per.

Klingberg will be 30 in August 2022. 5 year contract would take him to age 35.

Both would look VG on the Ottawa D.

Lassi will be 22 before the puck drops this year. He's apparently been getting better and better in Belleville under Mann while putting up better than 0.5 PPG. Can we not use Hamonic with Sanderson and slowly indoctrinate Thomson onto the 3rd line when we feel it necessary? Run a Brannstrom/Holden third pairing with Zaitsev as the 7th guy until injuries?

And how long until JBD is ready? 22, took the long way through UNI, looked pretty good when he was called up.

Are we truly under the gun to sell the farm for Chychun or equivalent? I get it, Thomson and JBD are not 'sexy' players to pencil in, but do they have the future that we need.

Instead of acquiring the old Defencemen that we have now, I would much rather have obtained a better Defenceman. Adding someone like Klingberg as a UFA appeals to me because it would not cost any roster players, prospects or picks. I suspect the budget is preventing the team from getting a better D.

Probably the criteria is to shed the salary to acquire a Dman.

Just give RFA minimal contracts for the next year or two while we unload dead cap like Zaitsev/Murray/Bobby/Phaneuf/MDZ, then give them medium 5-6 year EK contracts after.

Formenton 1M X 1 y
Brannstrom 1.5M X 1 y
Pinto 2M X 1 y
Stutzle 5M X 1 y

You can, but we’ve got a window of 5-6 years before players start hitting UFA and then who knows what happens. And if you’re to believe the adage that it takes dmen around 200-300 games to really hit their stride, then you probably need to accept that Lassi and JBD are likely 3 years or so from beginning to peak.

Not saying Chychrun is the way to go, but I think realistically whether it’s this year or next, we should be looking at adding a dman in his prime if we want to get moving on our contention window a little quicker.

Chychrun's trade price scares me, it will be interesting to see what Arizona gets
Every team's cap space is slowly dwindling. Even Ottawa after we sign Formenton and Brannstrom don't look like they have room for any 5M+ dman unless the team takes Zaitsev back, unless Buffalo/Anaheim are surprise players.

OTT, WPG, NJD, CGY, DET, CHI, NYI, DAL are the only teams with more than 5M in cap space.
OTT - we know isn't prioritizing a LHD and need to unload Zaitsev, which the price of doing both with acquiring Chychrun makes this unrealisitc.
WPG - rumblings of them trying to unload Schmidt, so not sure if they'd want to replace him, a top 4 D with a similar contract with another top 4 younger but with injury history
NJD - D corp is set with Hamilton, Marino, Severson, Graves, Siegenthaler, Nemec. Actually envious of their D.
CGY - Have 9 D under contract and Kylington to sign...possibly if they unload Valimaaki + Kylington + draft picks to bolster their team for another playoff run.
DET - Maybe? Could upgrade their top 4 for sure. Chiarot, Seider, Hronek, Maata leaves some room for improvement
CHI - Already have Jones to punt.
NYI - Cap issues once Romanov, Dobson, Bellows are resigned - easily 10 mil there out of their 11M of space, and their D is solid already.
DAL - need to resign Robertson + goalie and have a flood of upcoming RFAs next year with 3/4 of their Forwards coming off hte books. D relatively set unless they offload Suter for Chycrun which will be pricey.

Interesting fan survey. 2 Sens in the top 18. Do the same with right wingers and we'll see both Giroux and Batherson well inside the top 64.

It's going to be a tough year for teams to defend against us.

The full results had Formenton at 83, so a roughly average 3rd line LW.

Interestingly for those who say C.Brown is a 3rd line RW on a good team, he was strangely included in the LW survey, and came in at 43. Not bad... Stutzle was also included as a LW (22nd) which is more understandable but still wrong.

Edit: a bit off topic, but He already did a survey for D and Goalies

Chabot - 12
Zub - 78
Brannstrom - 117
Holden - 123
Zaitsev - 126
Hamonic - 128

And a goalie poll too

Talbot - 22
Forsberg - 39

But as a tandem 15.

:popcorn:Goalie rankings....Both Matt Murray and Samsonov are ranked ahead of Forsberg. Of course they would be. Lol
Yet are tandem goalie ranking is 15 and Toronto is ranked 27th.

I figured out Capfriendly numbers.

Our NHL payroll is currently at 67.6. This does not include potential performance bonuses for Stu, Sandy and Pinto. This does include all buyouts and retention.
