On Marino, I just think he's the closest to what is usually the type/caliber of player you try to keep. Young, somewhat decent performance history (debatable). Now, the fact that he's not a slam dunk or a no-brainer, is probably just an indictment of the cupboard. At least in terms of what's on the NHL roster.

Fair. And honestly exactly what I was thinking when I typed the above post out.

Most of whatever "comes next" are in upcoming drafts IMO.

Marino could benefit from an actual NHL defensive coach. Not whatever we have behind the bench

say what you will about Reirden but he has a pretty proven track record with defensemen.

I’m shocked that Marino is getting a pass by this board. He’s been downright dreadful for a year now and is the biggest issue with our defense given his performance versus cap hit.

bro, he's 24 & still within that bubble of learning the position. Matheson would be a far greater example of cap hit vs performance.

They say Defensman on average mature around age 27 and IIRC when Dumo hit that age that was when he came on his own.

I don't think Marino sucks. I think he's kinda like... a smaller, less defensively savvy Dumo with better offensive instincts/skills.

But neither would I tap him as a must-keep moving ahead. Far from it. Marino isn't Core 2.0 material, IMO. If he is that's... not super great.

No he isn't Core 2.0. But he is young and affordable and good at his job.

There is a vocal subsection of commentators who had planned to make him a whipping boy this season, and also happen to be very invested in the quality of the forwards (aside from Rust and ZAR, the designated whipping boys there). Just a distraction technique.

I mean if I were to pick on one group or the other... the forwards come up WAY higher on my bitching pecking order. But I've been saying that for years, now. The mix has been off a while. The coach has extremely stupid ideas of how this already-flawed collection of forwards fit together and that makes it even worse.

Marino is a guy worth holding on to for now. But I still think he's far off from the promise he showed his rookie year. Though there have been flashes this year which is good.

He is roughly as good as then. He just hasn't improved. But he is still worth his contract pretty easily and still young

That's how long it took Chris Pronger to really become a force in the league also. It's a difficult position to learn.
Pronger was a force by his 4th or 5th year in the league. So he was still only 23 or so, but that dude was a physical freak of nature and had vision far beyond his years. Comparing almost anyone to his timeline would be unfair.

Marino's whatever. Not as good as he was in his rookie year, not as bad as he was in his sophomore year. Decent enough middle pairing guy who could end up being more. Gonna need to spend to the floor soon anyway, so his cap hit doesn't matter. :naughty:

I’d move Marino in the blink of an eye.
I'd move anyone and everyone for the right return. Why? Because this era of Penguin hockey is for all intents and purposes over! No one is hands off. NO ONE! Just gimme dem assets!

As I just asserted, no one is off limits. However Marino is a guy who would be low on the totem pole as to who I would want to move. He might be last actually.

We should fire Sully, but let's not rule out the possibility that the roster, including the stars, is underwhelming and unfixable.

Still easier to get a new voice first and give it a whirl.
Won't matter. And keep in mind Sully makes a pretty penny. With the revenue being down and the fact we're not selling out, might as well keep Sully and run it into the ground, sell off high priced talent and start anew.

The defense is way more homogenous than the offense.

I mean... I think they're BOTH stale. BOTH too samey and BOTH put together by guys who haven't had any new ideas in years and/or threw a tantrum and ran off because the team wouldn't let him trade their best player.

Still hoping JR gets hired by someone with a good prospect pool near the bottom of the standings so he can poach all of "his guys" off this team to prove us all wrong.

I've been hoping this, too. I just don't think anyone is that dumb/desperate. Some speculated Seattle but that never panned out. I think him running his mouth (as usual) in the media right after he quit like an infant didn't help him much.

I could see Vancouver maybe taking a shot on him. They are getting AWFULLY itchy over there, recently.

The forward group is much easier to fix than the defense. Moving out Rust and bumping McGinn into the top six would do wonders.

you can move out Marino or Petts or Matheson and you are still stuck with aging Dumo, Chad Ruhwedel as a consistent bottom pairing D and aging Letang going to UFA. The contracts on the D are also frightening outside of our top pairing which is the worst.

I dunno.

I WILL say that adjustments up front could likely alleviate some issues whereas the D really is kind of "bleh" no matter how you configure it.

But I mean good luck with all that.

I honestly don’t see a difference between Marino and Ruhwedel at this point.

Marino will have value if we move him this year given someone will think he can bounce back and he is a RH D. I’d pull that trigger so fast.
