Some are suggesting that he's a top 5 pitcher and others are suggesting that he hasn't been THAT good.

He's still the leading MVP candidate and outside of 1 or 2 posters everyone agrees. Some of us don't think he does as well with Houston as Texas (literally 20% of his starts this year) and that after the next 3 starts his numbers could be much worse (assuming LA doesn't intentionally try to avoid Chicago and call it "rest"

Ray against >.500 teams - 3.00 ERA
Ohtani against >.500 teams - 3.20 ERA

I just think you're vastly understating how good he's been as a pitcher.

No, he isn't. A dude named Mike Trout says hi.

This surpasses any single season of Trout's career, quite easily. Trout's greatness is that he's done what he's done for a decade, but he's never had a season where what he's done can compare to what Ohtani is doing.

The only season I can remember that's arguably more impressive than what Ohtani is doing is maybe that 70 homer season by Mcguire and like 5 different Bonds' seasons. But we know the deal with those guys.

Out of curiosity... if Ohtani doesn't deserve full credit for his pitching because he's played in so many pitchers parks, shouldn't he also get EXTRA credit for his hitting?

And if Ray deserves extra credit for pitching in such HR friendly parks, shouldn't Vlad also get less credit?

Bingo.

Dunedin/Buffalo 1st and 3rd respectively for park factors

Vlad in Dunedin/Buffalo: 194 PA, .364/.464/.827, 21 HR, 48 RBI
Vlad elsewhere: 405 PA, .299/.370/.507, 21 HR, 52 RBI

I don't recall Trout ever pitching a Cy Young worthy season.

Hmmm ... I'm not sure this is the case?

I'm not seeing a lot of guys having monster seasons and losing out to prime Bonds/Maddux or something like that.

Carlos Delgado's monster 2003 season lost to A-Rod (and Bonds was that season, too) which is literally "something like that". One of Halladay's great seasons lost to a guy who pitched a freakish ERA below 2 or something that year, which I don't think he ever did again. It has happened fairly often.

Maybe look again?

Halladay had one runner-up which was to Cliff Lee which I mentioned.

Delgado was 6th in the AL with 5.9 WAR that year which wasn’t exactly an all-time season, but sure you can count that. Bonds was in the other league.

That brings the total to maybe 2 or 3 in 45 years. That seems like less than you would expect, if anything.

Vlad is still really good. You would think his ops would drop below 1000, but it hasn't despite his "struggles" in August. He'll also hit in Rogers Center, it's not exactly pitcher friendly either. Besides, it's not unusual for players, especially young ones, to hit much better at home. Those splits are not that unusual, imo

The combined value he has provided is at 7.4. Trout has 2 10 win seasons, a 9.7 and a 9.6.

Some minor league notes:
Phillip Clarke had an 8 rbi game Thursday.
Zac Cook is quietly good in VAN
Trent Thornton is an unhittable AAA closer.
Dany Jimenez is overpowering at AAA. Robberse with a clean start.

Ohtani is on pace for 8.5fWAR and 9.0bWAR. (His rough start last night for ERA has put his ERA and the predictive stats that Fangraphs uses almost exactly even).

Also, unlike some on here, I think that Ray is well behind Cole and Eovaldi for the Cy Young.

One of the big things that fWAR suggests is that you won't always be saved by double plays or shallow fly balls.

Obviously there are guys like Ryu for whom that isn't particularly true because he can change his pitching style.

I do consider the minor league parks a negative to some extent for Vladdy, but not a huge one and it largely offset by gg defense.

Blue Jays' win streak halted in bizarre, fiery meeting with Orioles - Sportsnet.ca

BALTIMORE – Having come set on the mound, ready to deliver a 1-2 pitch to Richie Martin in the bottom of the second inning, Robbie Ray suddenly stepped off the rubber amid some yelling between the dugouts. Visibly irritated, the Toronto Blue Jays lefty dropped his arms by his side and shot a dirty glance over at the Baltimore Orioles.

“Shut up. Shut up, D.J.,” someone is heard yelling, perhaps in reference to Orioles outfielder D.J. Stewart. The chatter continued, and somebody shouted a more vulgar version of “What the fudge are you talking about?”

Growing more annoyed, Ray paced around the mound. At that point, Orioles manager Brandon Hyde got involved, yelling something like, “What do you think we’re giving Robbie,” before he really went after the ace lefty. “We can’t say anything?” he shouted. “Pitch the f–––––– ball. We ain’t saying s–––. OK? F–––. Let’s go.”

Ray smirked at Hyde, blew a 95.6-m.p.h. four-seamer by Martin for strike three and then glared right back at the finalist for the Blue Jays managerial opening filled by Charlie Montoyo in October 2018.

“What the f––– are you looking at?” chirped Hyde. “Get your f–––––– ass back on the mound.”

Tired of the trash talk, Ray motioned a let’s go to Hyde.

“What the f––– are you going to do?” replied Hyde. “F––– off. We ain’t saying s––– here.”

The chirping, at least that audible to the public, stopped from there, the Blue Jays maintaining their poise both when Hyde bellowed like a blowhard at the bar, and again later when Fernando Abad, in theory chasing an errant throw, laid out Lourdes Gurriel Jr. as he ran from third to home.

In that way, the Blue Jays didn’t allow the Orioles to pull them into a full-on Gong Show, but that didn’t prevent them from dropping a 6-3 decision Friday night. They fought back from an early 3-0 deficit to tie the game in the sixth on the bizarre play with Gurriel on the third-base line and a Marcus Semien RBI double, but Julian Merryweather, in his first big-league outing since April 13, failed to field a Cedric Mullens bunt to open the seventh, and eventually served up a three-run homer to Anthony Santander that settled matters.

f*** Montoyo though for not going and ripping a strip off Hyde. Like absolutely unbelievable lol you have the opposing manager loudly yelling and distracting your pitcher with runners in scoring position. Nah Charlie just gonna enjoy the show.

Yea that game is the last straw for me with Montoyo. To not do a damn thing while the opposing manager is yelling at your pitcher is cowardly. And to top it off he puts in a pitcher who hasn’t pitched in over 3-4 months into a tie ball game while you’re fighting for a wild card spot. Pearson won’t even sniff the mound if the Jays aren’t up by 4 or more but Merryweather gets tossed into a 3-3 must win game in his first game back??? Fire him now.

Just realized Riley Adams (the guy we traded for a couple of games from the Hand) has been in the big leagues with Washington for 25 games now. Hitting pretty well too so far 71pa .317/.423/.550 2hr 6(2b) 1(3b) 6bb 22so

I know we're deep at catcher and I don't mind trading prospects for upgrades but this was like putting 2 dollars in the vending machine and the machine not even dropping the Snickers bar. Just a useless trade.

31% K% and a .472 BABIP. Not worried.

The recent injury report from the Jays website suggests Biggio has been playing through an injury all season. Definitely shouldn't give up on this guy so soon.

And I thought there was more to that tirade then just Ray not throwing the ball for too long. There was some yelling before we heard that part.

It's been implied somewhat indirectly based on Hyde's post-game comments that Ray or someone else on the Jays might've accused the O's of stealing signs or cheating somehow to tip their hitters off about Ray's slider. Nothing was said specifically but I think Ray said something in the post-game about how it was unusual that the O's were laying off his slider so much and in Hyde's presser he addressed the situation by apologizing for it but also saying he didn't like "something" that was shouted at the Orioles bench and that he (Hyde) didn't start the dispute/argument. After that he refused to go into any more detail.

Ray finish well ahead of Eovaldi for Cy Young...there's a good chance Ohtani will get more votes than him as well. I wouldn't get too fixated on fWAR - it's a factor but not the only factor.
