Assorted offseason thoughts:

Bergy – Thank you for 18 years of hockey here. A true warrior and gentleman. If this is it, I’ll miss him. I wouldn’t come back if I were him though, the outlook for the B’s isn’t very good in the near term, why put your body through that when you could enjoy retirement with your young kids. Plus I’m all for tearing it down so him retiring would benefit the Bruins in the sense that they’d definitely fall to the lottery next year and hopefully can get lucky and draft Bedard and build around him and McAvoy.

Pasta – I think we may have seen his last game here too. Not in any rush to throw the player out of town like Harry Sinden would do, but it’s a matter of him having one year left on his contract and he’s at just about his maximum peak value. If you want a jumpstart on the rebuild, and I’m all for tearing the bandaid off, you find a team who wants to extend him and will give up A+ prospects for him and you tear the bandaid off the hard way.

Hall – I just don’t think he’s a competitor. He has good moments, but when you devote $6 million to a former MVP and former #1 overall pick, you expect that he can at least drive a second line which gets favorable matchups to the top line. I know he was anchored by Haula/Smith for a lot of the series, but this guy has no extra gear. Total passenger. Regular season stat compiler.

Debrusk – How’s this for Irony. He’s the one guy I look at from that series and say I want him on my team next year.

Frederic – I hate this player so much. I’ve watched Bruins hockey since the mid-90s, I can’t remember hating a home player this much outside of Joe Thornton before the trade or Joe Corvo (for off-ice reasons). He brings nothing and lost his man on a lot of goals against, but he jaws at everyone like he’s a tough guy. It’s one thing to be a chickenshit troll on the ice if you can back it up like Marchand or will actually be a physical force, but when you’re a 15 point 3rd liner, just shut up.

Bruce – Could go either way on. Don’t think it was his fault when they gave him a bag of rotten groceries to coach. Did well in winning the weekend games without Lindholm and McAvoy and extending it to 7. But it’s been 6 years and they may do well with a new voice in the room and a new PP strategy

Foligno - I know he’s trying hard but good god, he’s washed up.

Smith – He has to have some significant injury because he looked really bad and ineffective out there

Coyle – I’ve never seen a good third line center fall off a cliff so quickly at the age of barely 30. What happened to this guy? He’s not even drawing quality opposition compared to Bergy/Haula’s lines. He's not getting Staal on him. He gets 3rd and 4th liners. But still no results.

Everyone else doesn’t jump out either way. Carlo has frustrating moments but overall in an 82 game season he’s useful. Goalies were not the problem. Even Reilly was playing alright defensively.

Going forward, what I’d again do is to rip the bandaid off and let Bergy retire, trade Pasta, have Marchand and/or McAvoy go on LTIR with whatever surgery they may need (scheduled for late-september of course), write off 2022-23 as a wash, draft high in 2023 and rebuild around McAvoy, Lysell, the prospects you get for Pasta, and whoever you snag at the top of the 2023 draft (Bedard would be ideal, obviously). But what I would do isn’t what’s going to happen. I think JJ lets Sweeney stay, he signs some #2 center to fill Bergy’s shoes, the team finishes just out of the 2nd wild card next year while making no real progress in terms of organizational direction and watches Pasta sign with the Habs for nothing in the following summer.

It just was not meant to be, Hall had a great chance to score in the first and was robbed by Raanta, then Frederic hits the post and the Canes go the other way and score, Coyle man oh man wide open net a sure goal and he can't hang onto the puck, Pasta missed a cross crease pass and even the last shot just did not bounce our way. The silver lining in this is that I think Cassidy and Sacco are gone, I could see Trotz hired as the next coach, maybe Foligno realizes its over for him and become an assistant coach. If This was Bergeron's last game wow what a ride it has been, sad that inept management and ownership could not get him 2 or 3 more cups. I think part of the problem also is that the old goat Sinden still has Jacob's ear.

So an aging Bergeron, Krejci who isn't even playing NHL hockey and aging Marchand are? Come on...wake up man. The Oilers are garbage, Id prefer to not make those mistakes. This team needs new management and to stop holding on to players and shit contracts, Not bring back more. Krejci ship sailed. So has this teams dynasty era.
One more year with dk bergy and coyle with claude or trotz running ship . Sway time. Hampus and Charlie 1 and 2 . I'm frigging in!

no one asking for DK to come back is suggesting he have a top 6 role. i would be against DK in a top 6 role. 100%

DK as a third line C is an upgrade and fine ASSUMING we bring in a true top 6 C. not some fringe top 6 C. but a REAL top 6 center to play alongside Hall and another true top 6 wing

Is Bergy gone for sure or just speculation?

pure speculation.

he has stated he’ll think it over when season-ends. See if he still has desire and if he’s physically still able. Take it year to year now.
If those two things are still there he wants to retire a Bruin.

his words.
not mine.

I think if Bergeron retires you may need to seriously consider cleaning house, but in all honesty that wouldn't be very fair to the new people.
Cleaning house? Bruins defence is young & goalie young + have a few young forwards. Concentrate on centre spot and start cutting bait with this veteran mentality and wasting cap steady with likes of Foligno You can add that stuff at deadlines.

thems was some scary times.
A lot of the youngins here got no idea what a truly bad team, years worth, looks like.
Gonna be one helluva education.
I picked a random season, 1999.

91 points was good enough to nab you 6th in a 14 team conference.

Now? (I get that the OTL point inflates the point total)

They used to just be able to limp into the playoffs based on being pretty good. Pretty good doesn’t get you very far in the 32 team NHL.

Even a WC isn’t guaranteed by any stretch.

It would be a sad way to go out if he does, but does anyone think Bergie has any illusion of the team winning the cup NEXT year? So why go through this again?

It's not just a case of having to beat Montreal anymore like back in the day. (yes, I am THAT old) How many teams in this league, right now, are more talented than the Bruins?

REBUILD...

Anyone who thinks this team will rebuild is going to be disappointed. The goal every year for papa Jacob's is to give a roster good enough to at least make the playoffs. No way he's going to want to give up that playoff money
I never was comfortable with the BRUINS' owner living in Buffalo. The real mistake by the lake.

Oh ok had heard him say this ,thought maybe something happened during the handshakes that might have pointed towards this.
