I don't know why some people are talking about Samo like he's a bonafide bottom pairing guy and Kostin like he's the risky AHLer haha.
We also have people talking about Kostin like he’s Zack Kassian. So there’s that.

Today's Kassian is a fairly low bar to meet.
Today’s Zack Kassian is 31 and sitting on his millions. It’s an unfair comp. If Kostin can put up some seasons like a younger, hungrier Kassian has on his resume, the Oilers win this trade laughing. All I’m saying is that there isn’t much on Kostin that warrants a Kassian comparison.

I was/am a Samo fan, but even then I think he lost his role to Niemo.

Nurse, Kulak, Ceci, and likely soon Bouchard are all locked up long term; Murray's here for a year, and Barrie will likely also be moving on within the next 12 months.

Something around...

Nurse-Broberg
Kulak-Bouchard
Niemelainen-Ceci

.... Is likely the core of this defence over the next couple seasons. Overall, I like the balence of skillsets and size, but you better hope Broberg and Niemo take that next step forward.

Because Kostin has cleared waivers already it'll be easy to send him up and down for 30 days. So if he's given a quick tryout and doesn't work you can just replace him for another guy in the AHL.
Yep, although harder to do because the only forward looking to be on the roster who won’t require waivers is Holloway.

Malone won’t need waivers for another 30 days either. Neither will Shore if he clears.

There isn’t room for Malone or Shore on the opening night roster. There isn’t even room for Hamblin who is still up with the team. He needs to be sent down before the season starts.

Only way there is room for Kostin now is
A) Hamblin goes down and Benson gets waived or goes on LTIR
B) Hamblin gets sent down and after day 1 of the season the Oilers send Broberg down and call up Kostin and run 13F and 6D.

I’m not talking about the opening night roster though. I meant once the games actually start, we can swap between Shore, Malone, Kostin and Hamblin depending on who’s playing well (I’m assuming that Broberg will start in the AHL with Niemo up in the NHL).

In that regard, it’s not really a huge deal if Kostin doesn’t impress after a game or two. Plus the fourth line is going to be playing < 10 mins/game anyway. They just need to Breakeven (which has historically been a huge challenge under Tippett, I admit).

It'll be interesting to see Benson's status.

Might not have room for any of those guys if he isn't injured enough for LTIR.

For all who may have a Koskinen jersey in your closet, problem solved!

They traded a 2017 3rd for a 2017 1st, what's not to like?

But seriously, I like Samorukov but it never appeared that management did so I look at it this way, there's a better chance that Kostin finds a niche on the Oilers (albeit slim chance) than Samorukov who was never getting a chance here so it's fine from that perspective. Ultimately, it'll probably end up being a nothing trade.

On another note, so the Oilers are likely to start the season over the cap it seems. How is that going to work unless they run with a 20-21 man roster.

Project for project. Samorukov seemed to be behind Broberg/Niemelainen in the organization depth chart and we seem to lack NHL ready callups for forward. Kostin kinda sucks but he is a former 1st round pick so maybe we rebuild some value there.

They'll have enough cap to run a 21 man roster. Just the #7D as a spare.

I wonder if he has ever played his off wing. We could use more RW than LW.

None of Shore, Malone, Kostin or Hamblin have room on the roster as it stands now. You can't swap between any of them because they all need to be in the AHL. If Benson goes on LTIR then we could call up Kostin or Malone. If Benson went on LTIR and Broberg got swapped out for Niemo then we could call up one of the others.

Anyways, sorry. I didn't mean to get lost in the sauce here. I'm arguing with you about semantics. It just would have been nice to have been able to see him play some pre-season games! That's all I'm trying to get at.

According to Spector, it looks like they have to work on getting Kostin a visa to play in Canada, which might take a few weeks. So it’s likely he wouldn’t have been able to play in the pre-season anyway, even the trade happened a few games ago. I agree it would’ve been nice to compare him to the other tweeners though.

Think this was as much about clearing up the logjam on LD / giving Samorukov a chance elsewhere as it was about the acquisition itself.

I hope Spector is wrong. Kind of a pain in the ass now having the guy able to play for most of the 30 days that he’s able to move up and down. I suppose that means he starts in the AHL for sure.
