He also turned down CHL so he could play NCAA, turned down the NHL at the end of last season and beginning of this season as well as the Spengler last month.

All these revenue generating things will forever be on his resume for HC. Unless he becomes a franchise defensemen I'd bet on him never being invited to any tournaments for HC.

I can’t say that I mind that one bit lol

It wouldn't shock me if Hockey Canada put him on their do-not-call list. They are that small minded and vindictive. I am no fan of the dopes who work at that organization.

I'm not a highly trained skater so perhaps it's more commonplace than I think, but I'm confounded by what Makar is doing with his right skate on this rush (starts about 7:24).

I was actually looking for video of him walking the blue line and stepping in, and I couldn't find anything with the footwork like I've seen him do it a couple times this year where he seems to have the ability to change direction 100 degrees without losing momentum.

God, that video is insane. Hes so dominant. I can't wait to see him in pro.

NCAA sure

Well, Quinn Hughes is in the NCAA, so presumably landy92mack29 feels that Makar is ahead of him, which could be a somewhat controversial opinion based on some of the strong views on Hughes. Outside of the NCAA? You would have Glass, Kaprizov, and a few others, so who knows.

Ultimately, I have seen enough of Makar to know what I think he can be at the NHL level (or at least hope that he can be), subjective rankings of prospects notwithstanding. Those types of arguments and rankings are no longer relevant to my view of him and his potential future.

Nothing controversial about it. Quinn Hughes has clear limitations to his game that he needs to work on. Makar is better defensively, can play a physical game and has a better shot. He doesn't really have weaknesses at least not on the NCAA level, cannot say the same about Hughes.

im not afraid to say makar is the best nhl prospect not in the NHL right now, he is older and hes taken his time at the lower levels. I was concerned this year Makar would just be spinning his wheels by not making the jump to the NHL but i truly feel this year has been great for his development. he is dominating as he is expected to, plus his physicality is a nice surprise IMO.

Going back to College for a second year has proven to be a great decision for Makar. He’s developed into a very complete player this season. I think there’s still a stigma around him that he’s an offensive defenceman but he plays a lot more like a Morgan Rielly or a Duncan Keith. I actually think that Rielly is the kind of defenceman Makar realistically becomes at the NHL level which would be huge for Colorado.

Hughes is slipperier than Cale & even more creative, so he has his advantages over Makar as well. That is absolutely a hotly contested question.

No offense, but having watched close to 60% of each of their games this year, Makar is way more dominant. I see Hughes as a guy like Barrie, puts up close to 60 points every season, but you don’t consider him a top pairing guy due to his defensive liabilities. Makar is more like a prime Duncan Keith with better offense and maybe not as good defensively, but skates like MacKinnon. He’s perfectly built for the modern day NHL and I can’t wait to start seeing him dominate the NHL starting as soon as maybe this season.

Cale's also older & more of a two way prospect than Hughes. Doesn't mean that Hughes can't have even higher offensive potential than Makar :dunno:

I mean, I prefer Cale and got a lot of shit for being so high on him at the time of his draft, but there are plenty of people who’ll take that more dynamic potential with the puck of Hughes over Cale’s advantage against it.

Yeah, I have no doubt Hughes will outscore Makar by a fairly significant margin each season - especially being the point distributor on what looks to be a lethal Vancouver powerplay. But considering the development curves of each, I also do not doubt that Makar will be the better and more valuable player.

I dont see Vancouvers PP being significantly better than the Avs though.

Hughes has similar potential but him significantly outscoring Makar every season seems like a strong claim.

There’s a number of reasons. Hughes’ road to being the top offensive defense man on his team is far less cluttered. I can see him being one of the few players who play every second of every powerplay. I also have no doubt that he will get far more sheltered offensive minutes in the NHL. On top of that, he’s a way more risky player than Makar; he’ll have 10 more points to go along with 3x Cale’s turnovers.
