Why would that be? Most players haven't had the Oilers on their list for a few years now. You get the odd american who doesn't want to leave Trump-land, but that certainly isn't the case usually for Scandinavian players.

Except the cap world is about balance. Having McDavid, Draisaitl and Bouchard is a huge chunk. Add Marner to that and we've recreated the same problem that's dogged the Leafs for years.
Unless the answer to that is just to make perfect signings and trades from here on out.
Then explain the Rantanen rumor, because the rumored extension doesn't make sense. They'd be handcuffing themselves again before they even start negotiations with Bouchard and McDavid.
The Oilers as it stands have about $15m in cap flexibility to re-sign Bouchard, Emberson and about four NHL regulars.

Not really, they would figure that out, there are other moves to make.
If they were considering moving Bouchard, I suspect Rantanen and Burns would be Oilers right now

The plan would be to run a very top heavy roster and an extremely cheap bottom 6. Obviously.
Guys like Arvidsson, Skinner, Kane, Henrique would be on the outs to pay for Rantanen.

Bowman talked about the Rantanen trade. He didn't say it by name but it was obvious.
He said there was a trade that didn't get done because the other team wanted more than just futures. So in other words we didn't have a Stankhoven to give. We were never going to offer Bouchard.
Just logically, isn't it madness for a forward-heavy team to trade to top pairing D for yet another high AAV forward?

This is what I thought as well. Who is Carolina acquiring for Rantanen? It's Bouchard. Oilers probably told 1 for 1 no picks.

If Edmonton was offering Bouchard for Rantanen Mikko would be playing for the Oilers right now.
He's a way more valuable asset than Logan Stankoven.

Yep. If we had Holloway still we would probably have landed Rantanen.
It would come down whether they can move out guys like Kane, Arvidsson, Henrique, Kulak, as Spawn said.
I don't think this team wants to move away from the big contracts that are performing. My guess is that they're thinking there's more certainty in giving an elite player a 14 million dollar contract than giving middling players $3-4 million contracts, and then you maybe suffer one year with a more shallow lineup until the cap shoots way up. You ride with as close to minimum salary as possible on the bottom pairing and bottom six for one season.

You know what, I bet you're right.
And imo that might be a bullet we dodged. Rantanen is a good player but there is real danger that he was the product of MacKinnon. The AAV on Rantanen would have been 14 million. Dallas got away with 12 because of the tax advantage. Plus what trades do we not make if we make that one? No Walman? No Frederic?
I still have hopes that we will have a goalie worth spending more than 7 million on. What if Walman pans out and needs a ton of cash to re sign?

The Oilers didn't offer Bouchard, or, again, Rantenen and Burns are Oilers today.
I think the calculus is that they can find minimum players off the waiver wire and free agency to fill out the roster, kind of like they did this season.
Kane and Skinner aren't even playing. Arvidsson's production is middling, and would obviously be improved upon by Marner/Bennett/big salary player. Then you have Janmark making 1.45 and giving you below replacement-level numbers, and Henrique doing slightly better but still overpaid. You also do have Savoie and Philp, who it seems like the team thinks will be on the roster next year.
I think you assume this lineup:
Savoie - McDavid - Hyman
Marner - Drai - Pod
xxxx - Nuge - Brown
xxxx - Philp - xxxx
Ekholm - Bouchard
Nurse - Walman
xxxx - xxxx
Can get you somewhere, maybe equal to or even better than this year's team, and then you start filling out those spots in the next offseason with some better players as the cap goes up. I think if they strike out on a big salary player, they'll still try to move some of these guys out and get younger and bigger. I'm not sure they have enough room to retain Frederic, but I think they obviously recognize that the team needs a more physical element.

i wonder if Toews will make his comeback attempt this year and play in the playoffs. If that guy could come back and play at like an 80% level, he'd be the dream 3C/4C for this team. The Oil do have some cap room, but I know he's been off for a long time, and that he'll take some time to find his game, if he is ever able to. But he would be the cherry on top of the sundae if he came back, and was effective. Even just as shutdown, face off, PK guy with lots of leadership, that would be huge for this team. Not gonna happen, but a guy can dream.

Plus the kid's a whale of a talent but he doesn't step it up during the playoffs.

Not having the assets did edmomton a favor IMO. Wouldn't regretted that contract. Guy has been atrocious since leaving the avs. Yeah yeah I know we have mcdrai for him to play with. No gaurmtee he has chemistry with brother and that's a huge risk for 13 mill a year

wasn't sure on the rules. I'd take him next year at camp. The guy is a great leader, and was a true big game player. Sad how the last few years have gone for such a great player.

They should re-call Savoie and play him in the top-6, or at least the top-9, bump Nuge down to 3C and try to play games without Janmark in the line up.

Janmark, Kapanen
See what this group can do before Frederick comes back. Savoie can play on the PK.

Edmonton being in Canada would turn many players away.
It's more than just who all is on the team. Even someone like MaxJones compared Edm to London,ON.
Many just put Canadian teams in their list just to avoid the unknown. (Eg. Purchasing property, work permit issues)
