Does anyone here have a recommendation for a funny yet kind of dark film that has come out within the last 3-5 years?

A friend asked me and I'm racking my brain but having trouble.

Barry, on HBO. Bill Hader plays a hit man who tries to become an actor. Hijinks ensue.

What We Do in the Shadows, on FX/Hulu. Vampires in Staten Island clash with their roommates while trying to take over the world. Hijinks ensue.

Barry looks dope and I'll be starting that in the next few days or so.

I edited the first post to clarify that I'm looking for a movie or two.

Thanks all.

This list is leaning horror-comedy but I guess that’s what I think of when dark.

Cabin in the Woods is a meta joke horror movie while also being a horror movie.

Tucker and Dale vs Evil is a lighter comedy-horror about horror tropes and mistaken preconceptions.

John Dies at the End is a great book and an ok movie. Having read the book first I can’t say how much a non-book reader gets the movie, because it’s so weird, but it has a lot of existential dread at its core. Sort of if Lovecraft wanted to be funny and crass.

List from Google of things I liked that fall into this category: Everything, Everywhere, All at Once, Happy Death Day. Freaky. Swiss Army Man. I, Tonya. Jojo Rabbit. Little Miss Sunshine.

What We Do in the Shadows also works as a movie recommendation.

It definitely leans funny but it’s still about vampires.

Completely agree with your horror comedy thoughts. Great recommendations. Although I’m not sure JoJo Rabbit falls into that category. Great movie but the horror is maybe a little too true to life?

Ya, Jojo is fitting the dark part. I guess I’d put it in as a dark dramedy. That’s where I’d put Little Miss Sunshine too; although it’s much more mundane drama.

More dark comedy films I would recommend:

Knives Out
Parasite
The Death of Stalin
Sorry to Bother You

If you're ok with something a bit older:
Hot Fuzz
In Bruges
Burn After Reading

Really liked Parasite.

Think it's the only modern (past 30 years) movie I've seen that genuinely reminds me of Alfred Hitchcock without making a blatant Hitchcock-reference.

In Bruges was a good one. Not sure I remember how comedic it was but Sexy Beast was another darkly funny movie I liked way back in the day. Almost feels like such a 90s/early 00s thing, dark comedy. Maybe that's me pushing a narrative but I don't know. We clearly don't respond to nuance as well as we used to for obvious reasons.

Seems like the reception for Andor has been pretty positive? I have to admit, after watching the trailers I didn't have a ton of interest in it but everyone I've talked to has loved it.

Book of Boba Fett was a mixed bag so I'm kind of ehhhh on Star Wars at the moment. But I might give Andor a shot if people keep recommending it.

Naaah, don’t watch it, you won’t like it anyways.

(This is what my father always did when there was new food they were trying to get me to try as a child… especially if it was something he really liked)

Andor is the most well made starwars tv show by far. I still like Mando a bit more, but Andor is actually very very good.
