I’m old enough to have enjoyed the original. A dystopian story about the perils of AI. In the mid 1970s it was novel. Today it’s obvious. Just tell a good story and move it along. If the slow burn is glacial it smells artificial or forced to me.
I'm that old too - and was hoping that was the level we were going to get with this reboot but this is nothing like that at all. I just wanted a fun action/suspense ride of man vs robots/AI where we got to see the struggle play out like a western themed Terminator series.

Instead we got mind games and trap door plot time jumps and cloned AI transfers of consciousness into the cloud with virtual realities or something... I can't really say I know what's going on for sure.

Few random thoughts on the movie Vesper while its fresh in my mind still. Visuals were a standout and I applaud the director for swinging for the fences with this kind of an ambitious tale, but ultimately I can’t really recommend this one. Acting was ok with the young female lead. Nothing too extraordinary, but sufficient I would say. Much like Amazon’s Rings Of Power, I just couldn’t connect and embrace the storyline and characters even though it looked and sounded great. A case of all style/flash with no real tangible substance that I had any kind of vested interest in. Pacing was extremely slow with prolonged stretches of time where nothing of real interest happpens. At times it was hard to hear certain lines of spoken dialogue. The payoff at the end just really didn’t do it for me. Ending was super abrupt. That said I did like certain scenes and imagery, but there just wasnt enough ultimately here to warrant watching this or recommending.

Watched The Fastest Woman On Earth over two nights and just finished it. This documentary did an excellent job capturing professional race car driver Jessi Combs’passion for speed, driving inspirations, relentless determination, meeting her idol for the first time, friends and family around her, along with a multitude of videos where she is recording herself in various states of mind throughout her ultimate quest. This team to their credit doesn't hold back at all in showing everything they do here. Heartbreaking and yet fulfilling both upon its final reflections. HBO has earned a reputation over the years for producing high quality award winning documentaries and this would seem to be yet another worthy entry for them assuming Max Originals still qualifies as “HBO.”
Watched this earlier today after I saw you post the trailer and I liked it as well. I was vaguely familiar with her before watching this so I went in not knowing much about her story. It was well done like most of their documentaries. I'd definitely recommend it.

Not sure about spoilers in a doc but...

That last in car footage from the camera over her shoulder was chilling. The fact that it and the computer the data was on survived the crash is kind of incredible.

I was genuinely shocked and blown away that they showcased that footage as well. I think all parties involved including her parents felt it necessary that to tell her complete story without leaving anything out, this be included. People not knowing in advance and even those who did know she died in her pursuit will be surprised to see they show her final tragic run In its entirety. Holy shit! I know they tease it in the trailer but wow.

Well spoken and talented Australian actress Milly Alcock from the first few episodes of House Of The Dragon shares her thoughts on why she enjoys HBO’s oft controversial show Euphoria. Breakout stars Sydney Sweeney and Zendaya have gained tremendous positive recognition to date for their work here. This show will inevitably hit harder with the younger generation it represents, but its yet another HBO award winning series filled with heartfelt drama. Milly was tremendous in HOTD imo. Would have liked to have seen her in more episodes.

Well, really enjoyed the consistent quality of every single episode of House Of The Dragon. Its a new favorite show for me this year that I really looked forward to watching live every Sunday night. For fans who watched every season of Game Of Thrones, at what point did you feel it went off the rails? I’ve read some people saying it gets markedly worse after season 4 while others highlight the last season or two as its significant downfall? Standouts for me with HOTD were the exceptional writing and dialogue, solid acting, epic sound design and music that takes everything next level, terrific casting, and overall storyline. Visuals were first rate in 4k. Hope those watching this have a good surround sound system and ideally can hear this in dolby atmos- pure sonic perfection. No issues with the CGI dragons. Olivia Cooke, Milly Alcock, and Emily Carey were all favorite actresses for me amongst the female character portrayals while the actor playing prince Aemond Targaryen was a major scene stealer with some terrific lines on the actors side. High production values all around here. This was really entertaining to watch. Will be a long, difficult wait for me until next season’s premiere.

GOT was almost always good, within some range, until they ran out books to translate and the show runners didn’t want to make an effort to write the meat and nuance in themselves; instead just pasting Martin’s vague outline onto the script pages. The show runners, Martin, and HBO all share in that show going bad to some degree.

HOTD, for me, was great. I’ve enjoyed a lot shows in the last few years but I don’t think any other show had me watching it as it aired because I enjoyed so much as to fear spoilers.

I do think the previous two episodes were better, but that was still a pretty good finale. Having read the book they ended the season about where I thought they would given how the last couple weeks have gone.

Can someone explain to me why everyone is throwing a fit about the Daemon scene? I get that depictions of domestic violence are uncomfortable, but it's not like this was out of line with the character at all. Daemon is violent, impulsive, cruel, and reckless. He's a protagonist but he's by no means a "good guy". Even though it seems like marriage has mellowed him to some extent, we saw how violent he got just two episodes ago. He murdered Rhea Royce with a rock, he mutilated citizens of King's Landing in the City Watch, he killed that innocent Velaryon guard to frame Laenor's "death," and he murdered Vaemond in open court. He mowed down hundreds of soldiers (including his own men) with Caraxes in the stepstones.

And while he does love Rhaenyra, their relationship is not healthy and never was. He groomed her since she was a teenager and tried to use their relationship as a ploy to get himself closer to the throne.

He only knows how to solve problems with violence, and he clearly has a lot of masculine insecurity as we can see from his relationships with women like Misarya and Rhea. And he clearly is still sore about how Viserys never trusted him and never gave him approval. It makes total sense that he would lash out violently when his wife, who now holds power over him, hits an exposed nerve.

Daemon is not a role model, he's not a good guy. It's obvious he can't control his emotions. I understand how people can find an on-screen depiction of domestic abuse to be traumatizing or problematic, but Daemon is a problematic character who likes to traumatize people.

I think I’m in the same boat as you.

I talked with a buddy about this and I also felt it wasn’t out of character for Daemon and that Rhaenyra knows and accepts this flaw in him.

Daemon finds out he was never truly heir and his recently deceased brother whom Daemon loves deeply never really trusted or believed in Daemon.

Daemon lashed out in a similar way earlier in the season when the messenger brought word that the king was sending ships. That messenger did nothing wrong and Daemon beat the heck out of him.

So I think when Daemon is emotionally hurt and feeling a failure he lashes out at the closest thing he can hurt, in this case it’s Rhaenyra.

Rhaenyra let him get his anger out, she didn’t look overly worried to me, and then they move on with life.

Daemon is not a good guy. He’s murdered multiple people without legitimate cause this season and severely beat an innocent messenger.

At least that’s how I see that scene. Even though it makes no sense to my point of view for my life, I don’t think Daemon nor Rhaenyra view that moment as a blight on their relationship.

'House of the Dragon' marks biggest HBO finale since 'Game of Thrones'

Highlights:

The ratings for House of the Dragon's season 1 finale are in and — spoiler alert — people watched it.

HBO saw its biggest season finale episode since the days of Game of Thrones, the Home Box Office network announced on Monday. A press release cites "a combination of Nielsen and first party data" in stating 9.3 million viewers watched "The Black Queen," the 10th episode of the prequel show's debut season. That's across all platforms, including streaming and linear TV.

The only bigger finale episode of any HBO series is House of the Dragon's predecessor. Back in May of 2019, HBO reported 19.3 million viewers watched the Game of Thrones series finale episode, "The Iron Throne," across all platforms.

House of the Dragon first broke an HBO record with its premiere, which became the network's highest-viewed series premiere of any original show. HBO reports that all episodes of the show are now averaging 29 million viewers in the U.S., "more than tripling their average debut night audience with strong catch-up viewing." By comparison, the average audience for Game of Thrones season 7 was 32.8 million per episode.

He's been called everything from a "master of his craft", a "visionary", a "perfectionist" to "one of the best directors working today". This one premiers tomorrow on Netflix. Guillermo Del Toro's put out some incredible movies over the years including Pan's Labyrnth and The Shape of Water. His reworking of Nightmare Alley last year was another crowd pleaser and he produced Antlers the same year which was another good one. Really interested to see how this one goes as he returns back to his horror roots.

GDT is brilliant but he is more designer than storyteller in my view.

I was looking into this one further and it looks like two of the eight episodes are original works he does while the rest are hand picked various directors doing them. There might be something still here for you. Stephen King was saying good things about it recently.

Regarding HoTD:

I don't give a f*** - kill them kids. I like that HBO has never been afraid to go there.

The finale was my favorite episode this season I believe. It’s still very fresh with me but for much of the episode I could feel my heart racing. Or maybe I shouldn’t have eaten that 10th mozzarella stick.

Been watching a series on YouTube of three friends playing tag across Europe. It randomly came across my feed a few weeks ago but man it's actually really interesting. I've traveled a bit around Europe before but it always seems crazy just how easy and accessible it is.

They made a movie about that staring Hawkeye, Andy and John Draper.

What is the YouTube series called?
