Campbell - 7-6-0, 4.12GAA, .872sv%

So glad we dont ever have to watch that guy in goal again.

You know its bad when you played for the SOO and Dubas has decided he wants nothing to do with you.

As I had said since the day the trade happened, this was a great move by Dubas. The Leafs were defensively sound last year but really needed a big positional goalie. They correctly found a soft spot in the market and went after Murray who played on a bad team and had injury challenges and Samsonov who played on a poor defensive team with a need to prove himself for a big contract that doesn't have an injury history.

Seems pretty low risk if you ask me, it's an ideal scenario for goalie performance. Not to mention already knowing that Kallgren can fill in as we found out last year.

Got a bit unlucky early on, but testing depth before the deadline isn't always a bad thing, as we've found out with the D corps.

The fact that the Leafs have the best goalie situation in this era and GAINED assets in the process for less cap hit is nothing short of miraculous. I sincerely hope Dubas is re-signed before it's too late.

I watched his media availability yesterday and man. He is trying really hard to put up a front but you can tell he is broken again. He just answered every question the same way "Need to get back to how I know I can play. I've been though this before blah blah"

I am thinking.. Has he ever pulled out of this? He was very good arriving in Toronto and played well until he was starter for a few months and the pressure got to him. Then he never recovered. The only time he recovered before was when he was dealt from the Stars and spent a few years in the AHL and then found his game.

Like you said, it's nice to not have to spend so much energy on one guy.

+1

I've criticized Dubas for this and that but I've always said he's done a lot more good than bad, better than most GM's for sure. Yeah yeah, no playoff success but that's really on the players, at least I don't see how the hell Dubas is supposed to somehow predict that the team will play at a high level until the last game of the year and then they will just stop. Last year was different at least, they played tough until the end against TB and I think they finally break through this spring.

I'm comfortable making the decision now. Extend his contract before he becomes UFA, I mean if we have success finally I doubt he'll leave but I'd rather not take that chance.

Yeah he seems like a super nice guy and I really hope bounces back and plays great again. I wouldn't want to bet on it though, and I sure I'm glad that Dubas decided not to.

I'm as frustrated as the next guy for the Leafs' poor performance in the playoffs but at the risk of sounding like an apologist, if the Leafs had played in ANY other division, that entire narrative wouldn't exist, much of this is due to the NHL playoff seeding. Even the Montreal series which was the biggest letdown of them all and an exception to the seeding thing, was to a Stanley Cup finalist, Carey Price decided it was his last kick at the can, so yeah what are you gonna do?

There's some truth here, but it's not the whole truth either. But that's OK, I've discussed the details enough already and with the team playing so good right now, when I think about the playoffs I try to not think about the past more than is unavoidable, and prefer to focus on the next playoffs instead where in my minds eye, I can see us not just winning a series, but steamrolling all the way to the finals. :)

This could be the year. GLG!!

Weird to say it, but who cares? (In a good way).
Hutch and Sparks as backups cannot be erased from my memory.

It does feel strange knowing the backup can win any given game.

I don’t ever recall feeling this way in the last decade plus.

This is insane

I've seen a lot of people saying that "no one thought this tandem would be good" given their struggles the last year or two - the moment we signed Samsonov, I started to feel really good about our goaltending. If you're rebuilding a tandem from the ground up, getting two young-ish but experienced goaltenders that have proven they can play well at this level is just about the best you can ask for - especially given that we gained assets in doing it.

Was there risk? Sure. But in my view, these moves were incredibly strategic and opportunistic from the start - and yet most of the fan base lambasted Dubas for being reckless and throwing caution to the wind.

The early returns of this bet are better than even our management could've expected, but given the circumstances, this was a masterclass from the start. Kudos to the whole management team - they stepped up at a time when it mattered most

At the time I didn't hate the idea on taking a chance on Murray because the options out there were limited, and he was only tied to two years. I just thought they shoulda got a lot more for taking him because the sens had their hands tied with him. Hes proven that he can win when it matters. Yes he struggled the past 3 years, but a large part of that was injuries, and tbh find me a goalie that hasnt had up and down years, those types of goalies barely exist in todays game.

It was definitely a gamble, but I preferred this to locking up Campbell to a 5x5. Getting Samsonov made stomaching the Murray move much better because we now had 2 chances at finding a solution. Goin into this season I was more optimistic about our goaltending than I was heading into last season. We had the leagues worst goaltending for over half a season yet we still put up 115 points. Really, how much worse could it get with Murray and Samsonov.

Hope they can both stay healthy and continue to play great. It could be a game changer come playoff times having a goalie that has actually won it all. For the past 6 years we have seen the likes of Andersen and Campbell crumble under game 7 pressure.

There was an overdrive clip near the beginning of the season and Frankie was saying that over time he has started to warm up to the Leafs goaltending. He got basically laughed at for thinking that way.

Calling it a masterclass is a bit much. Murray has been constantly injured for the past 4 years, Samsonov has been average at best in his career. Dubas couldn’t really pay the Campbell contract, so we don’t really know if he wanted him back or not. Early returns are looking good, but this could have went sideways fast, and almost did after Murray was hurt after the first game
