If this keeps up, what do we do in the offseason? If Samsonov puts up a .920+ this season as a 25 year old, there's no way you can let go of that... but then again, if Murray can reclaim the sauce that won him two cups you want to hold onto that too. Obviously still early, but this could be a serious embarrassment of riches
I think both will be retained but I think sammy is the goalie fo the future while Murray holds the bay until we are ready for that completely

I'd probably agree if things keep trending this way. I just can't get over the fact that we got a 25 year old first round pick goalie, with a half-decent track record of early success in the NHL, who now looks like he could develop into one of the best in the league; and we got him for free as an non-tendered RFA.

When was the last time a team found a goalie at this age, with this level of upside, as an unsigned free agent?

I dont know any situation like this for a long while that's for sure.

Let's hope we can develop him into the star he was touted to be in the back end.

I hope that Sammy signs an extension here
He will. It's easy to tell that he's enjoying the team and city very much. Also, all of the core is his age and it's working out. He'd be crazy to jump into a new environment after what he went through in Washington that has no interest in defense, won it already, and is just there to finish out their careers while feeding Ovie's records until he retires and the team blows up. He is probably well aware of the opportunity and needs stability.

Gotta hand it to him, he went for the long-term opportunity to play with superstars rather than an extra year on his contract to wherever.

So.....Samsonov....

What's he going to cost to keep?

Lol. Good problem to have but it's a problem all the same.

This tandem is working for me but I don't think we can afford it next year. Sam's an RFA (still can't believe the hockey gods just gifted him to us) but he sure looks a lot like 4mil....

Tell me we can keep them both please.

All those people saying he should have spend some assets to make sure we had a better 3rd string goalie were clearly right. We might have had a chance at being good this season if only Dubas hadn't screwed us, again. ;)

Sorry Kyle lol

Anyone watch the post-game comments? Samsonov with the executive power move walks out with the player of the game belt on his shoulder to answer questions. Total boss lol.

He and Murray are such different personalities but both have been very effective. They will make Dubas look like a calculating mad scientist and many of us looking like fools if they keep it up.

A calm, confident, experienced, no-bs guy like Murray in a playoff series with a ready Samsonov if needed is beginning to look very promising post-season.

Does it feel like we are all watching the trailer to the "How could Keefe start <GOALIE> in an elimination game?" thread?

Last night Murray played the pass and came off the short side post which Imo was a mistake. Cost is the game. Overall he was good though, but at this point samsonov had the edge

Interesting problem. Having 2 good goalies is a huge advantage in the playoffs but if sammy continues, the team won't be able to afford both next year.

It would be a mistake to let him go, he could very well be our goalie of the future. His comparables were Shesterkin and Sorokin and both of those guys were drafted a year earlier and are 1-1.5 yrs older than Samsonov. If Sammy keeps this up he could very well be in the same tier a year or two from now.

Sammy's got the better stats but I think Murray has aggregately had the harder schedule so I don't know if that's quite fair to say just yet.

Teams Played (League pt% ranking):

Murray:
Habs (22nd), Penguins (8th), Devils x2 (2nd), Sabres (21st), Wild (12th), Red Wings (17th), Lightning (6th), Stars (9th), Flames (18th), Rangers (11th)

Samsonov: Capitals (19th), Senators (25th), Stars (9th), Jets (7th) , Knights (4th), Kings x2 (16th), Flyers (27th), Bruins* (1st), Sharks (29th), Ducks (32nd)

*left game with injury

Murray on average plays higher ranked opponents, his opponents have an average pt% ranking of 11th, while Samsonov's opponents are average 16th in league pt%, and that's including the Bruins game where he left after the second period.

This is also reflected in the advanced stats; Murray and Samsonov have both started 11 games each with almost identical minutes (636 for Sammy and 659 for Murray), and in those games Murray has faced a total of almost ~20 more high danger chances, and the 'expected goals against' has been 35 for Murray and 27 for Sammy, so the Leafs have given up more defensively in Murray's games, likely because of harder opposition.
