Maple Leaf Goalies Samsonov, Murray and Kallgren - October record 4-4-2 for 10 points in 10 games = .500 hockey

They saved 257 of 287 shots on net for a combined team sv% of .895 for the month.

The preseason prognosticators had Leafs goaltending in a bottom 10 tier in the league overall and the numbers have played out that way with Leafs winning just 4 of their 10 games despite having a relatively easy schedule that saw them play 7 of their 10 games against non playoff teams from last year and bottom feeding teams from this new season.

Lets hope this was more about transition to a new team and the results improve from here.

Last year Jack Campbell and Joseph Woll went on a 12-2 record tear for November that really turned a similar 4-5-1 start around.

Honestly, not sure how you’d be comfortable turning to Kallgren again to play in net from a player or coaches standpoint. Guy has faced the three worst teams in the league and comes out with an 87.5 save percentage and not one win. I’m sorry but this guy isn’t an NHL goaltender.

The problem being that this was the Leafs backup plan when they signed the injury prone and high risk Matt Murray this summer.

Murray only played in 20 games last year and so there was a high probability that Kallgren would see action this year. IMO

Turns out goaltending has not been the problem even though 50% of it broke down. Who would have thought it would be the rest of the team?
It still is a problem to a certain degree. Samsonov has been good. But our backup is injured and for who knows how long. Our third string goaltender just played the three worst teams in the league and showed he doesn’t belong in the NHL.

Well Kallgren is not an NHL goalie, agreed. But of all the other things they were counting on and failed to come through, goaltending has been okay.

Never thought I’d say it but I’d rather have Hutch over Kallgren lol

Yes and no. ATM, I'd argue it's somewhat similar to that of last season's efforts. Samsonov is Campbell on his better days and Murray/Kallgren is unfortunately looking like Mrazek/Kallgren. GA>GF is currently a problematic trend, but one that definitely extends beyond just the goaltending (PK, PP, offence, defence).

It was rumoured Dubas had interest in Anaheim’s John Gibson but he didn’t want to come to Toronto, I was a big supporter of us picking him up…

9 GP
2 W - 6 L- 1 OTL
4.58 GAA
.883 Save PCT.

Did he kill his career/value staying with the rebuilding Ducks or is he just garbage now??

He’s ~30 and has 4 more yrs left at 6.5 after this.

Hes garbage now. Gets multiple injuries every year.

Can't believe the heat I took from several posters here for saying Gibson is not the answer and is playing nowhere near his old self anymore.

That’s what you got out of that game?

Hopefully a win and a 2.00 and .920% does.
That’s not what I got out of the game. However I do remember the knock against Reimer was that he always seemed to let in a softy at the worst possible time, so I think it’s fair to hope that this doesn’t become a reoccurring issue

I don’t think Samsonov is much like Reimer. Samsonov has had concentration issues, consistency issues and technical stance efficiency issues in Washington in the past but has a high end skillset for a goalie. Reimer was more of a flawed technical goalie who consistently played smaller than his frame but was more of a battler/swimmer who made a second, third effort.

Ultimately you’re right Samsonov will need to keep getting better and avoid the soft goals, but I think there’s a lot more raw ability to work with there.

I'd like to see what Petruzzelli could do. One issue is he needs to be signed and the team is at the max of 50 contracts right now. Another issue is he only currently has 33 games of professional experience under his belt. But he has always had solid numbers, and I remember one argument on here last year against calling up Woll were his numbers weren't deserving of a chance. So at least Petruzzelli has the numbers, but not the contract nor experience. I don't think it would hurt to try, unless the team would think he would be severely worse than what Kallgren is providing.
