Samsonov is so chill. Love this goalie. I can't think of a better personality for a pressure market in net. Think we've found our tender.

Funny how Samsonov was basically an afterthought after the horrible trade for Murray. But somehow people will still spin it like some Dubas genius move. Also want to see when he caves when the real season starts and how the tides will turn

You want to see Samsonov fail? Are you a Leafs fan? The guy is 4-0 with a 1.73 GAA and a .938 sv%. Smile!

Read the whole thread and you will see lots of post calling the samsonov move good, underrated, possibly the better of the two acquisitions

That's not how I remember the offseason. I think the narrative was the Leafs are rolling the dice twice and hopes that one or both pay-off.

It's early, but so far so good.

If Samsonov can be our number one that might be just what Murray needs to be our 1B, health willing of course.

For those who worry about resigning Samsonov. Murray’s buyout would be $685K next year and $2M the following year. Conveniently the cap will be going up. I would much rather they go this route than give away another high draft pick.

There's one at every party...

I truly hope Samsanov can keep it up and surprise me and do great. But I don't see it happening, in spite of his good 4 game start. He's been bad for several years now and we have a special way of making good Goalies look horrible(see Freddy Andersen after the 1st season or so here...). I'll wait before I proclaim him "a success".

Looking at how Laviolette is ruining Kuemper right now, makes me think it was a Washington problem...aside from the fact it looks like Samsonov has taken a step in the maturity department.

Nah, I think you'd have to work out a LTIR arrangement with Murray where he gets paid in full and the Leafs walk away with all cap space intact. Not much of a stretch to say Murray has a host of injuries to shut him down next year.

I'm loving what Samsonov has done so far in net, but I think consistency, bad habits (low stance when confidence is low) and adventurous puckhandling are things that got him in trouble in Washington. So right now it's a sample size game where you just let him build up the good and mature and steal the job.

Sounds great. Both parties have to willing though. On top of that, what if he’s a healthy backup for the remainder of the season?

$685K is nothing and $2M is palatable with a rising cap - especially if it’s only for 1 year.

In real world terms, Murray $8 million next year. So does he take the massive haircut on real world earnings so he can go be a backup somewhere, or does he take the full $8 million and basically take the year off on LTIR?

I don’t know. I guess it all depends on how he sees himself. Can he recover and come back after missing a full season? Maybe he is just-done. He’s won his cups and has had injury riddled seasons since. Maybe he wants to call it quits? Somehow I don’t see it though.

I guess the point of my post is that if it’s between buying him out and trading him with a sweetener, I would prefer the former. Your situation is obviously the most ideal.

Ideally both Murray and Muzzin go this route.

That 2M would hit in the same season Matthews, Nylander, Sandin, Liljegren and others raises would kick in. I’d definitely rather just trade him even at a cost.
If Samsonov has a great season we just have to hope Murray has a strong enough season someone traded for him

This is a fair take. It would all depend on what the cap situation looks like. If the cap is up by 5 or 6 million and have the cap hits of Kerfoot and Holl off of the books, it might be more palatable to have the buyout for the 1 remaining year. 3 years straight of loosing picks/moving down due to bad contacts is not the greatest look.
