Worth $2M at best, I'm surprised that Roy and company trusts him to play in a Top6 position. They'll regret this one, mark my words.

Those are his prime years right there. I personally think this is a fantastic contract for COL.

Gaudreau will get north of 7m. If he gets less than 6.5m, then Calgary will be over the moon.

so will Monahan..both have proven more productive thus far

It will be interesting where they fall.

Gaudreau has definitely produced better, but also had time to develop in college and is 2 years older.

Monahan produced 159pts in 237 games regular season while MacKinnon has 153pts in 218. (quick math is hopefully correct)

Factor in Barkov and Scheifele, and all those guys should be within a few hundred thousand of each other.

An extra 700k? I don't see that happening. Could see a bump but that's a big bump.

Prime UFA years are going to cost you. It's not like adding a year to Stamkos, which is more security for the player and lowers the AAV for the team.

We don't know because we aren't privy to the negotiations. We have no way of knowing. Maybe the player thought that 8th year was more valuable. Maybe his team didn't want to commit to the eighth year. He's now set him self up to be a UFA at 27. Another massive contract coming his way. Makes sense for the player not to go with 8.

Very good contract for the Avalanche.

There's no realistic long term risk in this deal, an RFA with arb years or a UFA with MacKinnon's current production would probably get 6M this off season. The risk is all in the short term. The Avalanche gave up the extra 2M of cap space they might have gained in the short term on a bridge deal in order to get a possibly bargain 3 years down the line when MacKinnon would have been arbitration eligible and will have 4 years left on this deal.

With the BS that Avalanche fans have had to put up with concerning Ryan O'Reilly's contracts and now Tyson Barrie possibly only getting a short term extension through arbitration, getting the team's franchise player locked down for 7 years should be considered a huge positive.

No they aren't. How many players became UFA's at 24?

Mack has played 3 seasons in the NHL already. Players are UFA eligible after playing 7 seasons. So Mack has 4 more seasons until he is eligible for UFA. 7 year extension, minus 4 years to UFA, equals...

When he reaches his potential he's gonna be a ppg+ player imo. He's got all the tools, just needs a bit more time and perhaps a different coach. Seems like a pretty solid contract, Avs fans should be pleased.

His ELC ran out. That's three of the seven years until he is a UFA.

This deal is seven years. So the first four years are RFA years and the last three are UFA years.
