I'm surprised they didn't go 8 if they're leaving him a UFA at the end of the deal. Still good money.

Love the deal from both sides this deal takes him until he's 27 where he will probably sign another huge 7 or 8 year deal it's a good way for him to make a lot of money over two contracts. Also the team gets a player at a very good number for his skill set.

That's a big deal for a guy who hasn't taken the next step *since his rookie year*

*since the first 30-35 games of this past season*

Pretty sure that's what you meant; considering that was by far the best MacKinnon has played in the NHL so far...until that damn wrist injury...

Deal eats up none of his UFA years, going to demand a pretty penny when hes 27. Good deal though.

Absolutely over the moon with this contract.

6.3M is gonna be an absolute steal for him during his prime years.

Long term I was honestly expecting the number to start with a 7. This is just perfect.

you're joking right? He's 20 years old..

It's actually slightly concerning. A majority of the truly elite offensive talent peaks almost immediately. Crosby, Malkin, Stamkos, Ovi, etc. were basically top 5 scorers by their second years. That's not saying he isn't going to be great, or worth the contract. But it's already looking like he's never going to be that "top 5" center everything seems to think he was going to be. If history is any indication at all, that ship has likely sailed.

What a great deal. 6.3 is fair now and in a few years will be one of the best value contracts in the league.
