Well, even if they did, they still couldn't score. I'm glad, we won't have to rely on them as top6 players. Our KHL guys and Khovanov-Zavgorodniy will make a good top6.
The Top 6 will be basically the KHL guys. As well as the D top 4. This happenned before. You overrate those series players due to one game performances against weak opposition. Khovanov and Zavgorodniy looked good against team Q. WJC will be a different story.

Podkolzin, Morozov, Khovanov, Zavgorodniy, Savunov, Malyshev and Miftakhov are 7 that I see consistently found in projected rosters by Russian posters on this forum and others. Are they that far off base?
Yes, they are, especially based in the games so far. And what is more important those are depth players and backups. The basic core of the WJC squad is in Europe.

Yeah but that would screw with our time tested formula snipes and these are games we simply must win, all t.v sets in Canada are tuned into this illustrious and historic/ tradition fueled challenge.

The "time tested formula" thing was clever for the first few posts, but now its starting to wear thin. Maybe consider moving on into some other shtick!

Morozov, Podkolzin, Khovanov and Zavgorodny are all likely to make the team. The other 3 are not.

Granted, the Russian team looked flat for most of the contest, but it's not like they didn't get any scoring chances; especially late in the game. In particular, Podkolzin had 2 "Grade A" scoring opportunities in the 3rd and Andree stoned him both times (in addition to making a few other nifty saves). The game could easily have swung in Russia's favour if it wasn't for the OHL's goaltenders.

McMichael definitely looks the most dangerous with a goal, nearly another, and a pass to send Noel in on a breakaway.

Russia wins in the shootout. I liked Jones' game, before the shootout anyway, as he faced some solid chances. After the first four games I hope that the WHL has several capable defencemen.

It’ll be interesting to see what Hockey Canada does with the goaltending situation. Gravel and Rodrigue were average, Daws and Andree allowed just one goal on some pretty good opportunities, and Jones looked good through 65 but fell flat during the shootout. Curious to see the WHL goalies. If they don’t play well, Hockey Canada may have a conundrum.

What did Merkley do?

Looked lost out there. His decision making did not seem fast at all. Gave the puck away a few times.

Was at the game last night....a few thoughts...

Podkolzin, Amirov and Grushev were all impressive for the Russians. Amirov is very shifty and has amazing edgework. He will be a sleeper in the draft. Looked better than Perfetti. Honestly I thought Amirov looked like a young Marner. Grushev is also not ranked high enough in this upcoming draft.

For Canada, Noel was the most impressive tonight. Byfield physical attributes are undebeniable. His skating is effortless and he rarely looks like he is trying hard. Malkin is a good comparable. Perfetti left a little to be desired. A couple of times though he decided to hang onto the puck and looked awesome doing so. I thought Angle had nice speed entering the zone. On D, Harley had a few brain dead give aways, Drysdale was good but looked a bit panicked. I liked Chisholm's game. He is calm back there and seems to think the game well.

I'm attributing that shootout performance from Jones to him just being worn out. He played a full 60 and then a few minutes of OT on Sunday and then have to make a 3.5 hour drive to London for the Monday night game. I'm surprised he played as well as he did! He's not going to be Mike DiPietro level, but if he gets the nod for the WJC then Canada should feel fairly comfy with him back there

I went to the game last night.

I had my eye on Noel all game as a Panthers fan, so I might be biased, but he looked like one of the best players on team OHL. His wrister goal was wicked, he was all over the ice and in front of the net on the other goal by team OHL.

I once even seen him hit a Russian so hard at the side boards behind the play that the Russian looked like he disappeared, then when Noel skated away he was lying on the ice.

Kid is a beast!
