Pretty much exactly what I expected for 6 years. Great contract for both sides.

Good deal for Calgary. Buys most, if not all, of his prime.

Originally I thought he'd be signed way earlier than this, but as negotiations lingered past their last preseason game, I didn't think they'd get him signed in time for game 1 for less than 7 and a quarter.

The thing with Kucherov is I don't think Tampa thinks he's not worth big money long-term.

Its that they don't have the cap right now to give him that deal unless they find a way to move out salary, and their 2 biggest salary dumps in Callahan and Filppula both have NMC's.

Yeah TB might have to move another guy that's not one of the infamous two cally/flip.

You guys need to understand that it's the UFA years that are expensive. This covers only one of those. Johnny wiill become UFA early in his career and it's then that he'll make big money and also then that CGY will likely lose him or pay through the nose to keep him.

Oof, this isn't a 'steal'. This covers his RFA years and 1 year of UFA, I believe. That's not a steal in the least. He had the Flames over the barrel and this is what shook out.

I don't think its a steal, but it is a fair deal. Calgary got their AAV, Gaudreau got his term. Could hurt after those 6 years if Gaudreau walks, but also could help the team cap wise during those 6 years. The question is, how many of those years is Calgary actually going to be contending for?

What a great deal for Calgary.

for those about to QQ about only getting one UFA year; 6 years ago, Vancouver was the class of the league, Boston won the cup, Chicago had 1 cup and LA had none. Mike Richards was a force in the league, Timmy Thomas was a killer in net.

There's so much that'll happen in 6 years, it's insane.

Signed for 6 years during his prime years, when players of his caliber are getting 7 or 8 plus?

Steal.

He's signed until 29, so that's significantly older then the typical RFA. We got him for 6 years athen a good price. Gio expires the same year so will have plenty of cap to resign if we can. If not I'm sure he'd be worth a lot to trade in his last season.

Sure, the amount is 'fair', it's a win for Gaudreau for sure though. What Calgary wanted to do was get him signed at a reduced rate through the first few years of RFA (where he had absolutely no rights this summer at all), then get him for the max term at big money. Probably would have ended up at the same AVV and they would have had him (a lot) longer. They caved. It's not a big deal, it happens all the time, but I think a lot of people were watching this one to see what would happen.

Negative.

It's not a steal for the flames. They had a player who couldn't get offer sheeted or arb. His only option which he said he wouldn't do was to sit out.

It's not a steal.

6 years of a top 10 scorer at under 7 million? He'll be 29 when the deal's done. That's fairly standard UFA age  it's not like he's going ELC-New Deal as a 21 year old. He got a nice team friendly deal here, and will get a huge payday when it's all over.

This.
I don't think people realize 6 years is a long time.

If he wanted 8M on 8 years, this is a logical compromise. I thought a compromise would be something that is in Calgary's price range but takes Gaudreau right to unrestricted free agency. I'm a bit surprised that Gaudreau gave up a UFA year, but maybe that is a result of not wanting his contract year to come in a season that might be cancelled.

Flames fans should be thrilled with this. 6 years is a long time. Gaudreau is locked up at a great cap hit until then. CGY then has a good shot at extending him as a UFA. Stars rarely hit the open market. The security of signing a long term extension a year early is usually too much for them to pass up.

How is it only one UFA year? I keep reading that and I'm not saying everyone is wrong but what other player has has RFA status until 28? :help: I always thought 25/26 is when UFA status starts
